submitted by changbinsomnia
at my store.. my manager (due to DM's ruling) doesnt allow us to work overtime. like at all.

im scheduled 30.50 this week, but picked up hours so im at 30.23 with another 13.25 (scheduled) hours that needs to be worked which will put me at about 43 hours. which puts me at time and a half. i dont really wanna talk to my manager about it but i think im gonna have to. its really annoying that i'm willingly working my ass off for this company but we arent allowed overtime.

Going into OT needs to be approved by the SM. It's great that you picked up more hours but it does need to be approved first. If you picked up hours from a different store, that store would pay your OT, but again, that store's SM needs to approve.

my manager said "youre working 10 hours today? i support you, work as much as you want" i'll probably email him tho :/

Yeah, OT was a strong no-no at my store. If need be, I think it could get approved if it was an absolute must (probably a shift supervisor on a Sunday), but baristas weren't supposed to take other shifts if it would take them in to OT. I'd often plan my hours to ensure I'd be at or below 44 hours that week (limit in my region) after picking up any extra shifts.

Same for my district, we’re not allowed to take borrowed shifts that will make us go overtime, our manager always tries to make schedules where everyone stays at max 35- 37 hrs.

Our DM would have to approve OT for anyone and we weren't allowed to pick up shifts if it put us over 40hrs, with very rare exception.

I think I got OT on 2-3 checks only because we had a SEVERE lead shortage and I was the only lead in the district available to work when someone called out sick.

thats crazy ive never been denied overtime and do quite a lot of it. maybe just because we’re so few staffed?

I would actually check with your DM. I have caught my SM making up so many rules while stating it comes directly from the DM, only to find out after talking with the DM that they never said such things. it will probably be different in terms of overtime, but always verify with your DM when you are told questionable things. that is why the DM’s contact information should be available to you. do not be intimidated to speak with them. they are supposed to be there to help you as we are all supposed to be partners on the same level according to starbucks standards. this will only happen if you fight for your rights as a partner.

I can verify the Partner Guide does say OT has to be approved by the SM. As an SM, I can say we’re supposed to get it approved by our DM. However, some of us have good working relationships with our DMs where if we have a solid case, we can approve it in the moment and tell them why we did it later and they’re cool with it.
