Told to be at work but not allowed to clock in? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by QuartKnee08
So I’m a ssv and was asked to come in at 8:30 to take a test the dm has to proctor. I show up at 8:15 ordered a drink and sit and study for a while. At 8:45 the dm hadn’t shown up yet. I asked my asm if I could clock in since I was told to be here at 8:30 and I was just studying and waiting for the dm to show up. My asm asked the sm who said I couldn’t clock in until the dm showed up. The dm didn’t show until 9:45 so I lost and hour and a half of wages that I spent waiting at the store. Can they require me to be at the store and not pay me for my time?

No, if you are scheduled/asked to come in you get paid for that. Same goes for situations like say the opening shift is late but the baristas are there on time, even though they couldn’t work or enter the building they get paid if they were there on time. (I will say this is just from what my manager has told me so I might not be 100% correct) but if you are asked to work and you show up you get paid.

I talked to my dm about it and she said that she would make sure that I get paid for the hours I was told to be there.

if you are at work you get paid - no exceptions! if you have trouble call ethics and compliance. if you do not get anywhere with them call your local labor board. this abuse of partners will stop, it is not right!

If I were you I’d reach out to your dm! My guess is that your managers don’t want to have to take the hit to their labor budget over you having to wait for the DM, but hopefully if you tell your dm you were asked to come in at 8:30 and didn’t get paid for that 8:30-9:45 time period, they can help you fix that and also your dm is probably the person who’d be grumpy at your Sm over labor anyway so hopefully the dm will tell them it’s fine.

So yeah I’d try DM first for that reason, but you deserve pay for that time regardless so if that doesn’t turn out you could try to escalate it through ethics.

Also what test is the DM proctoring?
pettingneos 5 points 10m ago
probably food safety. some sm's aren't proctors

Weird must be regional we just take our food handlers test on the computer
pettingneos 2 points 10m ago
so weird, my sm had to put in a proctor code and get it all set up for us. could maybe be your sm was a proctor and didn't mention it? it's the food safety certification through a 3rd party vendor so maybe it's different vendors per region

Yeah we just do it on our own time no code take the test print the handler card and go about our day I do mine on my iPad and have for the last 10 years

Today I asked to speak someone regarding a different position at my new job, the guy came and found me and told me to “come talk on break or whatever.” If I’m talking to you regarding work positions/what’s going on with my training and whatnot, I’m absolutely going to do it on company time. Especially when I showed up early to speak to you on my time and you “weren’t available” at that time.
