Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Before customer connection, we had secret shoppers that measured more about the product and less about some vague metric. (self.starbucksbaristas)

Here’s how it worked:

Customer/secret shopper would order a drink and make notes of how the reg experience went. Points were docked for things like not asking for a name, not suggesting a food item, not offering a receipt, etc. the secret shopper would take notes on the lobby, eg, how clean the condiment bar was, how clean the restrooms were, the state of the rest of the lobby, etc.

Now here’s how much more serious the siren was about “handcrafted drinks.” The shopper would take their drink and rush to their car to measure the temperature and weigh the drink. That’s how standard were policed. They’d taste it too, but those points were weighed less than temp/weight.

We were held accountable to things like third place and drink standards, not asking customers about their fucking day.

I should add - we’d get a copy of the shopper’s notes sent to the store. If the shift got a high score, it was a big deal.

E: not the shift lead, the entire shift working during the shop.

I loved my time as a partner tbh but now that I'm looking for work again there's just no chance I'd join sbux as it exists today. I'm sure there are plenty who still enjoy working for the siren, but between the product shortages and supply issues, customers being 1000% bolder AND corporate coming in with the union busting on top of these unattainable standards of service, I just know it wouldn't be the same for me. Hope things get better for you guys still working the front lines

Gosh this brings me back. We'd have to always be on alert for the would be secret shopper. Anyone who got a tall hot drink was a suspect! 😅
But in a lot of ways, those were the best days. Being a 5 Star snapshot store was a big deal and felt great. Lol

I always did a check in before someone got on the floor and I’d remind baristas that we just started an LTO and to remember to mention it because we might get shopped.

Whenever we felt we were shopped, we’d call/text everyone in the district that shoppers are in the area 🤣
