Training, at least in my experience, was a lot of fun! You feel a sense of ownership and responsibility to make the next green bean better. Granted, I felt I did a good job training, but it’s still up to your green bean to retain, practice, and excel at the skills you teach.

Other comment is right, lots of “what if the partner doesn’t learn that way?” questions. Lots of tips and tricks. But ultimately, it’s refreshing you on all the standards so you can share that with someone else.

Go into it with the mindset of: “When I came to the company, what would’ve helped me succeed? What do I wish someone would’ve told me or shown me?” That’s always a great jumping point. From there, organize your thoughts and patterns for teaching in ways that make sense. I created a kind of puzzle game with empty cups to quiz my green bean on shots/pumps. Think of fun ways to remember certain standards, I.e. I told my green bean that Venti cold drinks are needy and extra, always wanting more shots/syrup than their hot venti cousins.

Be confident in your abilities. You (hopefully) wouldn’t be promoted to trainer if people you work with didn’t think you were up to the task!

as prev comments have noted, the trainer training covers different learning styles (how would you teach a visual vs kinesthetic learner; how would you teach a returning partner vs a teenager starting their first job) and what you’ll be training on (barista 30 structure, what the different modules are) and there’s a practice session where you’ll “train” your SM so they can give you feedback on your teaching style

we’ve had pretty high turnover recently so I’ve helped coach/train a lot of green beans, and I agree that it’s rewarding to watch them gain skills and confidence.

my top tip would be to remember just how much new info is being thrown at them, so of course it’s going to take time. be patient when you have to repeat the same info and reassure them when they make mistakes. also, make sure to introduce your green bean to the rest of your coworkers, and show them resources like recipe cards on the ipad!
