dress code help? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by wisestoflittledogs
i've been working at starbucks for over a year and my store already hates me enough for no reason (my other post says why), but this is genuinely something i can't control.

i got a 2nd degree burn above my knee. it hurts badly and i went to the hospital and got told i cannot wear anything that covers it. no sweatpants, no pants, none of that. other starbucks stores aren't strict as mine is... the one i work at is the DEVIL, and i have no idea what to do.

i already told them, and they said if i want to work, i'd have to find something that covered my legs. i offered about cargo shorts or even a long skirt, but they are on the verge of.. i don't know.

im like 98% sure the handbook says you can wear shorts and skirts as long as they aren’t too short. i would report to ethics maybe. this seems incredibly unfair

The hand book states no more than 4inches above the knee

Yeah you can wear shorts, dress, skirt as long as it’s no higher than 4 inches from your knee. Color scheme has to be within dress code.

You're allowed to wear a plethora of clothing. Long skirts and dresses within dress code color pallette is 100% acceptable. Its just not supposed to be more than 4 inches above the knee.

Did you get this burn at work? Because thats a whole other mess if they don't accommodate for a worker who has a work place injury that needs to heal .

Someone at my store wore a dress yesterday. You’re allowed to wear skirts and dresses.

You can wear a long skirt…..

This store is completely out of line and I hope you report them. You are 100% allowed to wear shorts and skirts and dresses that aren't too short. I hope you get some people in trouble for this because it's straight up unethical.

you could probably wear a skort, with shorts that go up hire than the burn, but the skirt is long enough for the 4" rule!!

Cargo shorts are ok! Idk what your store is on, but I wore those bad ugly boys all summer when I worked at the Siren.

If the shorts you’d need to wear are more than 4” above the knee, look into applying for medical accommodations with Sedgwick. If you don’t already have paperwork saying you’re meant to wear XYZ, get some. If you’re able to get approval from the bureaucracy that it is a reasonable accommodation for your current medical needs then it won’t matter what your particular manager thinks or how strict they want to be. I know of one partner granted an exception to the no wrist accessories thing because of a need for a heart monitor, so medical accommodations for the dress code are a thing.

I’m quoting the dress code cause I can’t upload photos, this is official.

“No higher than 4” above the knee and may not drag on the ground”

“All pants, shorts, and skirts in a solid color”

“Leggings can only be worn under skirts and dresses”

So if your burn is close to your knee you could wear shorts, but if it’s further than 4 inches than you are unfortunately out of luck. Shorts and skirts are explicitly okayed though.

Yup I wore a long sweater dress yesterday they are totally in dress code just make sure not higher than 4 inches above knee

You are allowed to wear shorts, skorts, and skirts. I would double check the handbook to see the length, because I don't remember it. This is also an injury, so they should be accommodating you since you have a doctor order on this.

If they have an issue with you protecting your knee while following dress code, then I recommend reporting them. Your health comes first. I hope you get well soon.
