Green Bean concerns (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by strbrrylmnade
Hi! I’m brand new (started on the 22nd) and had my first day of espresso bar training and I am so overwhelmed. How long did it take y’all to remember how many shots/pumps go into what drink/size? I worry I’m in way over my head here

took me like 2 weeks to memorize it and 2 months to get comfortable (not second guessing myself). no one expects you to have everything down right away so it’s okay. utilize the guides you’re given and don’t be afraid to ask for help. there are quizlets and other guides online if you want to study up off the clock

oh my gosh i didn’t know there were quizlets that helps so much. thank you!!

I had a little card that I used for a cheat sheet. Had all the shots and syrup pumps that I kept in my apron and it helped me feel more confident on bar!

I also did this! I actually found an example on this sub, if I find it I will link it! I basically edited it in excel so I could make it easy for me to read then got some self laminators from staples! Kept it in my pocket and I would say I got the hang of it around 2 weeks. You got this! ❤️

i’ll definitely have to make one of those before my next shift!

Here’s mine! I just get them made and laminated at a local office supply store. $1

Of course! Enjoy 😊

One of the managers uses a sharpie to write down the number of syrup pumps and shots in each cup size and keeps them on top of the espresso machine while newbies are on bar. It’s an absolute lifesaver while learning, as it’s a really easy visual reference and helps you get used to visualizing the cups/size differences!
strbrrylmnade [OP] 3 points 10m ago
oh that would make my life so much easier

Give it a shot! I was having a hard time with seeing the difference in size between grande and tall cups sometimes so I would literally hold up the cup to see what size it matched to and reveal it’s fated recipe. Also, you can just keep the same cups in the back and pull them out next shift!

Honestly everyone learns at their own pace don’t stress. It honestly just takes practice and making mistakes to learn!
strbrrylmnade [OP] 1 points 10m ago
thank you that is so reassuring. i made a drink wrong yesterday (made it upside down on accident) and i had to remake it and i felt horribly about it
Low-End4987 1 points 10m ago
Of course! It’s going to happen. I used to do all that stuff. I would pour hot water in an ICED americano. I put caramel pumps instead of vanilla in the caramel macchiatos and put extra pumps on accident, pump too many pumps in Frappuccino’s. You name it I did it all it just takes practice and don’t be afraid to ask questions to anyone they don’t expect you to know everything yet!

i am two months in and a little tip i have for the basic latte/mochas/etc is remembering “1, 2, 2, 3… 3, 4, 5, 6”
aka shots for sizes 1=tall, 2=grande, 2=venti, 3=venti iced and then pumps for sizes 3=tall, 4=grande, 5=venti, 6=venti iced! it’s hard to explain through text but i’ll whisper to myself 1 2 2 3 3 4 5 6 to figure out a venti has 2 shots and 5 pumps of syrup. practice makes perfect!

i had my roommate quiz me a couple nights a week and i think i had it down within a couple weeks :)

Do not, I repeat do not spend time outside of work studying. Do it when you are getting paid to, don’t let the job consume any of your time off the clock.

It’s a lot to take in at once. You’ll get used to it in time.

I like the memory cue that iced venti’s are so vain, they need an extra of everything :) Just for fun once you start getting things memorized!

I’m also new and another partner shared sbuxdates.com and that was helpful too!!
