Lady screams at me in the drive thru over a drink being messy (i.redd.it)
submitted by Smallfemdom
Smallfemdom [OP] 371 points 10m ago
Also, my manager was at DTO literally right next to me and he didn’t say anything. It hurts when nobody has your back and you have to talk to each new customer like you’re the happiest person alive.
vareenoo 150 points 10m ago
RIGHT. when a coworker contradicts u and makes u look like the bad guy so the custy glares at u afterwards..
coffee-and-chillll 55 points 10m ago
I cannot stand when that happens. It’s so mortifying when a coworker doesn’t have your back. Personally I’d never do that to a coworker, I will always defend my coworkers unless it’s clearly inappropriate behavior or something excessively wrong that they’re doing, but I’ve never encountered anything like that with coworkers besides one who was touchy with other coworkers (it was clearly making them uncomfortable) which just wasn’t okay with me.

As far as customers trying to embarrass and ridicule a coworker, I will never take part in that, even if a coworker did something wrong. Clearly they’re learning in that moment to not do what they did again in the future thanks to being yelled at and the overdramatic customer response, I’m not gonna add to that and embarrass them. Being there for the team is crucial
vareenoo 25 points 10m ago
it’s always my shift :/ telling me to not do smthn and then when the customer complains she’ll go do the thing she told me not to. it makes the work environment feel unsafe tbh
coffee-and-chillll 13 points 10m ago
Oh noooo :/ I’m so sorry. I’m getting rehired as a barista now, but I used to be a shift and I would NEVER be that way with my coworkers. If anything, I would do everything I possibly could to make sure everyone felt as supported as possible. I never corrected partners or told them not to do something out on the floor.

Honestly I never told any coworker to not do something…I just feel like even as a shift I didn’t view myself as a “boss” and would rather give advice if I thought something should be done a different way. But when it comes to customers, I never instructed coworkers during those interactions. Being ridiculed in front of customers makes me wanna melt into the ground lol

The way I see it is the only reason we all make it through is because we’re a team, I surely couldn’t get everything done and have successful shifts alone. A lot of the time it feels like us vs. the customers, and I’m sure as hell gonna be there for my coworkers. Supporting everyone is a priority to me because they’re the superstars that get me through it all ✨
ardentAmbivalence 9 points 10m ago
I'm so sorry you went through this. I'm sure you are great at your job, and just busy. This customer sounds entitled and rude. I normally just double cup super messy drinks, but most customers don't make it an issue. Customer connections being pushed so hard has been super stressful. I hope your day improves.
crapricorn-01 4 points 10m ago
Your manager is required to step in😵‍💫. I’m so sorry you felt that way and we’re treated like that
Malachite_Migranes 4 points 10m ago
I have your back. I’d tell them to Fuck off in my customer service voice for you ❤️
darkwolf523 3 points 10m ago

Had a partner throw a drink back, good times
Sad_Artist8253 13 points 10m ago
Customer threw a hot drink at one of my coworkers so she throwed our point/ gift card scanner back at her and she was fired. She all had to go to the hospital because the drink was extra hot and she had 2 degree burns
CMilk212 7 points 10m ago
BURNED AND THEN FIRED WTF
omogal123 4 points 10m ago
Or shut the fucking window like aggressively. Make them wait. Make ur manager deal with it.
happymasquerade 62 points 10m ago
I’m sorry that happened to you :( your SSV should have stepped in if a customer raised their voice at you. That is not okay behavior, and we (SSV) even get training on de-escalation.

I know this might be tough because getting yelled at can be emotional, but you don’t have to just stand there and take it.
Deep breath, calmly say something like “hey, sorry this drink is too messy/doesn’t meet your expectations, BUT you need to lower your voice or I can’t help you. I realize it is frustrating but you can’t speak to me that way.”

If they continue to yell, step away from the window and get your SSV or SM to handle it! Nobody should have to take verbal abuse from a customer

Edit: I am an SSV for context
Smallfemdom [OP] 28 points 10m ago
Thank you :( it’s nice hearing this from a supervisor. Come to my store :,)
Js_On_My_Yeet 11 points 10m ago
I know we SSVs got trained on de-escalating the situation, but sometimes you can't help but think if it really is worth getting treated this way. I've seen too many of my hard working partners get yelled at by so many customers. And me having to step in each time is literally mentally draining. I really love my crew and this job, but like I seriously am getting fed up with the amount of privilege that Starbucks literally dishes out to its customer base. Sometimes making the moment right means standing up for yourself and your partners. I honestly don't care if I get downvoted for this. I've been working too long for this company to care about standards and policies when the higher ups don't even care enough to protect the people they employ. Third place can suck my ass.
capsule_of_anxiety1 2 points 10m ago
I second this!! I worked at a corporate store as a barista trainer for 3 years, now I’m at a licensed store and have been there for a month. It’s so nice that people are (rarely, not saying it doesn’t happen but much more rare here) much nicer at this place. Granted, my old corporate store is really close to my new licensed store and the corporate store is closed for at least a month for a remodel (it’s the busiest store in the district, too) so we’re getting slammed with a lot of their business. So we’ll be getting more mean customers 😢 but, even my coworkers are nicer too, and the managers and supervisors care. They may not doing everything to the book (that’s what I’m there for, to train them properly to Starbucks standards. They’re already looking to promote me) but at least they care and don’t tolerate customer BS.
wowgamesarefun 61 points 10m ago
Awww♥️♥️ I actually just left early cuz yesterday I had a really rough conversation about work and today I was just sobbing, I hope you have a good day, fuck those rude ass customers :(
Smallfemdom [OP] 45 points 10m ago
Ugh it’s so dumb. Im sorry that you go through it too. Waking up at 3:30am and being a cry baby didn’t help LOL

Passion-Syrup 7 points 10m ago
I feel like this is happening way too much now because I am having similar problems in dt and sobbing way too much. Sending love <3
Responsible_Snow7109 6 points 10m ago
I would match that bitch's energy. Im sorry u had a rough time at work ❤️. Just know that the lady is miserable in life and trying to take it out on others working in food/service to make herself feel like half the lady u are ❤️

✨screw her✨
Claudiaswyr 5 points 10m ago
I’m sorry babes. I understand. Literally it even your fault. If it makes you feel any better, she’s probably super bitter and never enjoys anything in life
isab333lly 5 points 10m ago
so sorry this happened to you hunny :((
baristas are people too! that’s why we match energy out here 🤌🏼 but for barista purposes, i know it gets tough. i’ve learned to respond in a manner like “look, im very sorry your drink came out this way. we can absolutely remake it for you or i can offer you some napkins.” but the moment a customer starts yelling that window is getting shut cause i dont get paid enough to get my feelings hurt
jaahay 5 points 10m ago
You deserve better // nobody deserves that kind of hate and evil.
i_am_me47 5 points 10m ago
sending all the love <3 also i love your username hahaha

Heidicindy 4 points 10m ago
Ugh! I'm so sorry!!
catmom821 3 points 10m ago
Oh my gosh you beautiful sweet human! Nooo! Don’t let the morons steal your beautiful sunshine! For every awful one. You have made at least 12 people’s days. Think about all the people in that line who are so excited to get their order because that’s their treat and you made it!!! For every one awful cunt there are at LEAST 25 people thrilled to receive what you made!!
Smallfemdom [OP] 2 points 10m ago
Thank you:,)
smoolbeean 3 points 10m ago
im big on the third place policy. i cant get repirimanded if im following policy. so the second a customer is rude im like mmmm cant serve you until you calm down pls ive had a couple shift leads tell me to just do what the customer wants and im like i dont think i will if im getting yelled at
BaristaBabe13 3 points 10m ago
That’s why I hate customer service. I now work at a place where I make the cream cheese for Starbucks, more than double my pay at Starbucks and everyone is hella nice.
EggForLife69 1 points 10m ago
Cool! Where’s that?
smaidit 3 points 10m ago
it’s so hard especially when they curse at you. it’s like damn we have to be understanding for them but god forbid anyone thinks about us and our feelings. feel better :(
Wonderful-Put-5972 3 points 10m ago
Pray for her coz clearly she needs help from a great power!
BrightAngelBarista 3 points 10m ago
A customer’s anger has absolutely nothing to do with you. She’s unhappy with herself.
🌻 🌻🌻
I’m so sorry you didn’t get the support you needed from your manager.
JibJab1994 3 points 10m ago
I’m sorry that happened to you. Just keep reminding yourself that their behaviour is not about you it’s about them not being a happy person and trying to drag you down with them.
TopDiscombobulated13 3 points 10m ago
I’m so sorry people can be awful. You deserve better!
kai03X 2 points 10m ago
I have a picture of me literally just like that at the brink of tears.
1PinkPanda 2 points 10m ago
I’m so sorry this happened 🥺🥺🥺
ComradeSnowball_ 2 points 10m ago
Don’t cry yo, I feel you though. It’ll be okay, there are better customers, and the people that act that way only are only showing how severely unhappy they are in their own lives. To take it out on someone they have a short interaction with is petty and sad. It takes a lot of perseverance to not let it get to you, but you’ll pull through and be laughing about how ridiculous the customer was in no time at all.

Find a way to get your head in a good space also. Read a book, draw, go exercise, or watch a good tv show. Something that will pull you away from the negative energy. It’ll be okay, friend :) you got this!
devhelix 2 points 10m ago
Aww honey dont worry its not about you its them
Youd cant be sad your hair is too cool
Smallfemdom [OP] 1 points 10m ago

No_Indication_5205 2 points 10m ago
Their job is to support you and they're supposed to de-escalate situations and step in for you in these moments!
darkwolf523 2 points 10m ago
Sending you love and hugs, OP. I know it probably won’t help but it’s something. Also that username though. O.o
starrrrrfruittttt 1 points 10m ago
your hair looks so good omg
soundfanatic 1 points 10m ago
i had a lady scream at me at window because we were out of strawberry inclusions. i just stood there like "are you serious right now?"

you have to remember these people are giant toddlers who don't know how to regulate their own emotions. when they throw tantrums, you treat them like children. you can tell them that their behavior is not acceptable, or you can walk away without a word and set that boundary. tell your shift to file an incident report about it so when the karen complains, there's already a record of her behavior.

i'm so sorry your manager sucks tho, you deserve someone who is willing to back you up.
graylikesoap 1 points 10m ago
man i’m so sorry. i cannot believe the audacity of some people. and i can’t believe the way half the people that work for starbucks would rather let it happen to someone else than try to get involved and help de-escalate the situation. again im so sorry ):
PlantVader 1 points 10m ago
You look like Emma Chamberlain
fallinginnow 1 points 10m ago
The joys of being a starbucks barista! Fr tho the way people treat us is completely insane sometimes and you never have to put up with it, you are always allowed to remove yourself from a harmful or shitty situation and your management cant say anything about it, always take care of yourself first! Your value is far more important!
Mediocre-Bat1027 1 points 10m ago
She deserves to have the window slammed shut while she's screaming.
missgiddy 1 points 10m ago
I’m sorry this unhappy person put a damper on your day. 😔

JosephineBlow 1 points 10m ago
I’m so sorry. Some people are such bullies that they have to take out their anger at their miserable lives on people who have no choice but to listen. I hate that one of these walking dumpsters spewed their garbage on you.
Roscop7391 1 points 10m ago
So move on next customer she’s not worth your time.
UsualRefrigerator211 1 points 10m ago
very sorry friend 😔 i hope you have a better day
CapableArtist123 1 points 10m ago
Im so sorry, i Can see the pain through your eyes. Although I always say I don’t care what customers say, sometimes it feels like I am having my toxic mom yelling at me all over again.
capsule_of_anxiety1 1 points 10m ago
I know it’s hard not to take personally, they’re probably lashing out at you bc of some shit happening in their life. It’s definitely not an excuse and not okay. But I’ve had my fair share of shitty humans screaming at me in this job, and sad to say I’m used to it now. I honestly just match their energy. Don’t let some dumb ass Karen scream at you over her beverage not being perfect. Stand up for yourself girly, you got this :) especially if your own manager won’t do it.
wipies29 1 points 10m ago
People yell at people for no reason- it’s a part of life. Know your worth and don’t let it affect you.
masterfuckerupper 1 points 10m ago
Getting fired from Starbucks was the best thing to happen to me
PhantomsAria 1 points 10m ago
You did not deserve that, you poor thing.

darkwolf523 4 points 10m ago
Does that give an excuse for customers to be screaming at someone for no reason? Yes the world does have rude customers like that but finding another job won’t make that go away

darkwolf523 2 points 10m ago
That OP should cry if someone screamed at her. She might be new, might be her fault that the drink came out as a mess. Not to mention her manager didn’t stick up for her.
Smallfemdom [OP] 3 points 10m ago
They/them btw. Id think U would be more empathetic than that
Smallfemdom [OP] 3 points 10m ago
I’ve been at Starbucks for almost two years and this one sucked most. The drink was messy because my worker made it and I tried to wipe it up beforehand.
Smallfemdom [OP] 2 points 10m ago
Honestly they’ll follow you anywhere. But the good people make up working there, I love my job so much. I think I can handle sometimes shitty people. Its not worth quitting for me idk. It’s more complicated than “if you complain about your job then leave”.
Carsatan 1 points 10m ago
People have a right to be upset when they are treated poorly. Customers should treat workers like living People and not work slaves.

People scream everywhere, my mom's a receptionist and gets screamed at, I got screamed at in retail, and I still get screamed at in food service, it's unavoidable these days
