Looking for solutions to tip theft!! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Itz_lindsey_marie
Hey all! I just wanted to get peoples opinions on how we can solve and try to prevent tip theft. We’ve had our tips stolen at least 4 times since I’ve transferred to my new store and it’s always the same person that takes them. If anyone has any input it’s be greatly appreciated. 😁 I feel pretty helpless in this situation.

That’s a good idea to leave coins.! Then it’s not the end of the world if that gets taken but it still signifies that we accept tips!

sometimes putting them behind the pos doesn’t stop them tho🤠

We keep our drive tip jar inside to avoid this and the front one is next to the POS so to steal it they would have to almost reach over the counter.

We do the same at our store. It's allowed us to stop a few people cause while we were at peak we witness someone try to reach over. They received a sturdy talking to by our ssv and the customer has since been banned.

We’ve had people steal the entire plastic containers that the tips go into. We’ve gotten into the habit of putting the tips away into the tip bag once the jar has around $10 or so in it. Any bill larger than a single pretty much immediately goes into a deposit bag. We’ll drop the deposit usually at around midday and close.

Put existing tips in a trenta cup frequently away from the customers and leave an empty jar out.

ban the person who steals tips. the.. end?

i wish, my store doesn’t rlly enforce the ban and we can’t force people out. we also can’t do anything if we witness our tips or cups or anything on display being stolen, we have to let them walk away. it sucks and idk why it’s like this but i’ve learned to just exist. we also aren’t allowed to use the tip bags to store tips and leave them out, they have to immediately be put away into the safe. it’s frustrating because we used to make a lot in tips and now we’re lucky if we get 12 dollars

My friends used to work at a now closed starbucks location that was constantly hit with lots of theft and incident reports, their solution was tip jars with false bottoms- when someone tried to take the jar, all they got was a mess. This obvs isn't the best solution because it makes a big mess of coins everywhere when someone tries to steal it, but the thieves are usually trying to get out in a hurry and the big crash from the spill was usually enough to send them scurrying out without the tips! It had it's pros and cons

If it's one person who is repeatedly doing this, maybe just one time with the false bottom tip jars would be enough to deter them from coming back! I'm sorry you're dealing with tip theft :(

my store keeps the coins in the jar and puts the bills up in another place out of customer reach

my former store switched to locking tip boxes that are secured to the counter with industrial Velcro! Not only do they *look* pretty hard to run away with, but they had me pull on it to test it and it would take a decent amount of struggle to get it out of the door. I’m pretty sure it was just an Amazon purchase with the p-card 🤷‍♂️

Along with taking out cash as soon as its put in, I've worked at a location where the tip jar was a jar mug with a handle that had a very narrow mouth making it hard to reach inside. The manager then ran a cord through the handle and attached it to the till so no one could walk off with the whole cup but it could stay up front.
