my old sm (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by arctic-lyra

my sm (previously) had tried to make sure that we could talk to her which was always nice.

i had just gotten out of my senior year of highschool (may) and planned on attending asu in the fall. i was still 17 but i was out of school so my hours were limited to 40 a week (as they are now, im 18)

i asked her for 20 hours and for it to start in june (i asked in april), so i could make the deadline for the amount of hours to qualify for the benefit.

she told me she would be happy to give me the hours. fast forward to june, i was barely working 15. i was upset and talked to her about it and she said i was still a minor and i legally couldn’t work those hours.

i got upset and decided to look up the minor labor laws.

i found out that because i wasn’t in school i was able to work 40 hour weeks.

i never got the chance to talk to her because she went on vacation and then i went on vacation and then she left.

she works at another store and idk what to do about this anymore. it’s stressful that i have to start in the winter but i guess i’ll just cope? idk man :/

Starbucks has it's own laws I am not in school too and have to follow them. You can't work before 3pm on weekdays 8am on weekends/summer days. Can only work 4hrs on week days and 8 on weekends. If anyone knows a way around this lmk lol that's what I was told if ur under 18 edit this is for CA might be the same or different per state but Sbux has it's own minor rules

maybe.. it was just super stressful because i talked to other people and they said that it was wrong. im mainly upset that she’s hiding behind the excuse and hasn’t apologized

Hello this is almost completely state by state laws when it comes to minor labor laws. In my state it's no longer then 4 hours shifts and 20 hours in a week (the 20 includes weekends possibly being 8). Now during the summer once it's marked out of school you should be cleared to work up to 40 hours. Once school does begin your pretty limited sadly on hours.

school was over, she just wasn’t giving me the hours, and used that excuse

That's just awful did you ever talk to your coworkers about mabye taking on some of there hours. I have a co worker who's been doing that over the summer.
