A partner for 4 years, but transferred to a new city last month. Just watched one of my new partners (3yr) make a venti iced coffee: coffee→ 4 pumps classic→ ice (the venti scoop put it about a cm from the top)→ milk on top (literally the tiniest bit fit) 🙈
I just stood and stared at him 😐 like bruh what? He said that's how he was trained. So I then had to run through all the standards for cold bar with him to make sure I was working with a partner who knew how to do their job 🤦♀️
Who trained this guy?? And even more, why had nobody corrected him up until now???

3 yr SSV here. I think a lot of people are afraid to coach more experienced partners. I was extremely timid when I was promoted, especially because I was a 1 yr SSV supervising 8+ yr partners. I quickly learned that being a longtime partner does not equate to being a good/knowledgeable partner. Everyone needs coaching, even longtime partners.

I just became a trainer under the new program. Also just got my first green bean so I’ve personally gone back to re-read recipes and make sure I know my ish. It is a little intimidating telling a seasoned person when they are wrong. My SM suggested using the term “coaching” vs “training” with them.

ESPECIALLY LONG TIME PARTNERS. 15 years under my belt and I still have to look things up because things change all the time.

They have changed the strawberry frap like 5x in the 6 years I've been there (mostly just a lot of back and forth)

As a former SSV (mostly mid and closing shifts), I saw many people in the AM not doing things to standard, like steaming a venti amount of milk for a tall and then using that milk towards the next hot drink as well. Tried correcting this and then was told by my SM that I was a poor at coaching and that some people refused to work when I was working

Shift here. Just coached a barista trainer yesterday to use the lines on the cup to measure coffee and milk when making iced coffee.......she literally told me "oh I didn't know the lines meant anything for iced coffee" 🤦🏼♀️

Knew a barista trainer that had been a partner for 3-4 years that had absolutely no idea how to open or close the store. Was baffled. Guy bragged about having trained 20+ partners. Then when you’d show him how to do things, he’d get so overwhelmed and acted like a child refusing to do the work. Welcome to Starbucks!!!

I do it like that with cold brew so it matches the pictures (like the cream swirling down) also if it's labeled ice coffee with milk i do it before the ice and if it's labeled as ice coffee (with 1/2 cream) i do a little on top idk if that's right but it's how i've always done it
Responsible_Snow710913 points10m ago
I do know that the sweet cream cold brew standard is where the sweet cream goes in last on top. But for when you have to add any creams or milks to iced coffees or any other regular cold brew then you have to put the creams or milks first but the only one that doesn't get it last is the sweet cream cold brew
EarthLaser5 points10m ago
What!? I was never told that. I pour the cream on top and let it sink down. Nobody has ever corrected me.
Responsible_Snow71093 points10m ago
Yep the way you're supposed to do it for the vanilla sweet cream cold brew is by putting the vanilla in the cup and then the cold brew and then ice and then sweet cream. So sweet cream comes last for the vanilla sweet cream cold brew but if somebody gets a regular cold brew with 2% milk or oat milk or whatever milk or cream, it's the cold brew and then the milk and then ice. And that's how it is for iced coffee too. Because the vanilla sweet cream cold brew by recipe is supposed to have a splash of sweet cream. But if you do a regular cold brew with your choice of milk or an iced coffee with your choice of milk, there's lines on the black cup that you have to follow where the cold brew or iced coffee would go up to the middle black line on the cup and then the choice of cream or milk would go up to the top black line. But like I said it's not like that for the vanilla sweet cream cold brew because that is only supposed to get a splash in the already built recipe
EarthLaser-3 points10m ago
Are you sure that’s not Cold Brew w/ Milk or Iced Coffee w/ Milk? Because I know you measure with the lines for those. But when it’s just cold brew 1/2” cream, I add the cream on top.

My store trained me incorrectly on a lot of drinks, what’s the proper way to go about this drink?
jams10152 points10m ago
Venti Iced Coffee: Venti iced cup>6 (full dose/hot bar) pumps classic>iced coffee to the third black line if they want it black>if they want cream or milk, iced coffee to the middle black line, then milk or cream to the third black line>ice>finish and connect!
Emmykinz772 points10m ago
Oh ok gotcha. At my store if they wanted cream we were just trained to pour it on top 😭
jams10152 points10m ago
Be the change, Emmy, it's your time to shine! If you feel comfortable, just announce over the headset that you were looking at the recipe cards and noticed the standard iced coffee build uses the cup lines to measure the cream/milk. If that doesn't sound like your idea of a good time, just relay the info to a shift or manager and they ought to get the partners up to speed. Or coach it as you see it. Or role model it and when someone inevitably asks why you're doing it the way you're doing it, share your knowledge. You can definitely get everyone on the same page, you've got this!
Emmykinz772 points10m ago
Thanks ❤️ I will bring it up to my supervisor :)
devilsreject49261 points10m ago
That's how I was trained a few years ago but after moving to a new store last year I saw no one was doing it that way so now I do it the right way. No clue why my entire store, including the sm, had been making drinks wrong for 2 years straight.
AllTheSquishmallows1 points10m ago
When in doubt, look up the recipe card. Then no one can argue with you 😉
catbeetle1 points10m ago
That’s how I was trained 😌
badtimesman001 points10m ago
Just watched my SM do this.....didn't say a word.
Ordinary-Theory-8289-22 points10m ago
Because does it really fucking matter? Oh dear heavens he added the milk after the ice instead of before?! The horror
piratedashel13 points10m ago
Yeah, it does. For consistency reasons. We’ve all heard the “Well MY STARBUCKS does it like this…” it’s annoying and it should be consistent across the board.
badtimesman005 points10m ago
According to you, there's no point to me saying anything. If you read correctly, you'd see I did nothing lmao so what do you want from me
