Foolproof ways to get more hours??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Intelligent-Ad1273
I’m at the end of my rope y’all. I need around 25 hours a week to pay my bills and afford groceries and I’m lucky if I get close to 20. I’m scheduled for 14.5 hours for the next 3 weeks and it seems like my SM doesn’t give a shit. He just keeps saying that we don’t have labor and he’ll do what he can (which is bs). We’re overstaffed and he’s accepting transfers and asking for coverage from other stores. Everyone’s availability got fucked up and he’s asking us to miss our classes for 3 weeks (college town) so we can work. I’m available 45 hours out of the week and I can’t open it up any more with my school schedule. I have to have Sundays off so I can see my long-distance boyfriend, do a d&d campaign, and catch up on homework, but I’m completely available outside of that except for when I’m in classes or asleep (I can’t do open shifts bc I have early classes and I close). What do I do aside from quitting and going somewhere else?

Hit up your coworkers and offer to pick up any shifts they'd rather not work.

I’m trying but us closing peeps are all hurting for hours bc he overloads mornings with labor and they still don’t get shit done so mids and nights are just fucked 😒

Oh shit yeah, I'm sorry y'all closers have it rough. That seems to always be the case. Mornings are insane, sure, but that's no excuse not to keep up with the daily tasks. I used to be a trainer when I worked at Starbies last year - please feel free to message me with any questions if you need help.

It's the sign of poor management. My store was the same, except we were often understaffed and we still got our hours throttled.

You can also reach out to other stores in your district and offer help there too, though be prepared for more time and gas money commuting. Usually it ends up worth it just to get by.

Sorry I made all of these comments scattered instead of all in one. Another thing I remembered is, when there's higher competition for hours, make yourself more valuable. Sometimes it's a sign that you need to level up. But sometimes it's a sign that management is not being handled professionally, and you may be better off moving on. Stay frosty, barista. You've got this!

I’ve done about everything I can. I went out for a closing shift position and a morning barista got it. It’s like if it doesn’t affect mornings, then my SM doesn’t give a shit

> I have to have Sundays off

That's a big part of it. Weekends are when the business is busiest and when there are hours. It's also when people don't want to work.

Short of that, look for people that want their shifts covered, leave notes with your number at nearby stores, etc.

I thought that but then morning people have Saturday AND Sundays off and have 20+ hours a week. I’ve opened up my availability as much as I can but I just can’t do Sunday. I don’t think unionizing is the answer but something needs to happen with management
rudebii 8 points 10m ago
That’s because they’re working mornings, the other time when the business is busiest.

There are two things you can do to get more hours: open up your availability or pick up shifts. Good luck.

Sadly, it’s a given if you work mornings during peak where it’s more staffed, they’ll get more hours. The rest of us are lucky if we get anything lol

You can pick up shifts in the scheduling app. You should be able to pick up shifts in your entire district, but I believe there is something special you have to do to see those shifts (I'm new, maybe someone else can answer).

But why is quitting not an option? I've been in the position before too, where I had a very shitty job but felt quitting would be too hard. It ended up being the best thing I ever did. I bet there's something better out there

You have to ask your manager to add you to whatever stores you’d like to see available shifts on your days off when you’re in the partner hours app

Quit just like me

ask your manager to let you be a borrowed partner at other stores. i’m not sure about the process, but as far as i know just request that you be put in the system for other stores to borrow you.

aside from that, open your availability or transfer. there’s not a lot you can do if your manager just isn’t giving you hours
