It’s too good to pass up but the cost is being beholden to the siren 🥲
xerox-of-a-xerox [OP]33 points10m ago
this is the first time i’ve heard of the “siren”. and someone else used it in here!! i get its slang for being a slave to this corporation but where did it come from?? hahahah
Flowerfuls54 points10m ago
The siren is the person on the logo ! She’s a siren I believe 😆 it makes for great jokes
Ibebarrett44 points10m ago
She uses her beautiful songs that tell tales of affordable healthcare and college tuition to lure you in before mercilessly devouring your will to live

Accurate…

i did this for the first 3 years i worked at sbux. i’m like 4 and a half years in now and started my degree a year ago. i wish i would have started asu when i started at sbux😭 if you know you’re not staying then i get that, but if there’s a chance you might hang around i’d say don’t hesitate to sign up!
babybagel36 points10m ago
i applied at starbies solely so i could do the asu thing! honestly, getting my degree was such a good motivator to eventually cut ties with the siren and i personally think it's a really good idea rn to do it coz it used to be u had to pay half of it upfront and they reimburse it to u at the end of the term, but now they essentially pay it in full (with conditions i don't completely remember)
so yeah! i have subsidized loans to pay off still bc at the time i started they had the reimbursement thing going on, but i feel u so hard on that.... i had to give 4 years of my life to the siren and it feels like a long time
psionicillusionist19 points10m ago
Yeah, and it was a good thing too cus my manager was being shitty to me while I was pregnant so I left. Glad I didn't sign up for any classes.

I am in my last year and counting the days away until the benefits roll over into the Spring semester so I can finally quit. I am literally dragging ass though.. I want to quit so bad but SCAP + Biden’s loan forgiveness is going to set me up very nicely once I graduate.
pinkshadedgirafe15 points10m ago
I worked at Starbucks strictly for the benefit. The difference was that I already had my AA so only had to work for two years.
RedDeadGurl1 points10m ago
How does it work? I just accepted a job and I’m curious how exactly everything is. Do you have to work for a certain amount of time before your eligible? What is the catch? Strings attached?
pinkshadedgirafe1 points10m ago
The rules have changed since I left, so I'd look for answers elsewhere. But I do know that you only have to be there for 90 days before you can use the benefit, and then only need to work for 20 hours a week on average. If you want to attend ASU, get started on it before your 90 days so that you can actually start classes ASAP
RedDeadGurl1 points10m ago
I see the $5200 whatever for annual tuition, are you able to be a legit full time student at asu or is it going to take 6 years to finish a 4 year degree? I’m at a state university now and I’m taking 15 credit hours and I’m confused how this would be free at asu unless the classes are incredibly cheap
pinkshadedgirafe1 points10m ago
Like I said, it's different now than when I was at Starbucks. For me I had to pay a small portion up front each semester but it was reimbursed in my paycheck at the end of the semester. Apparently you don't have to do it that way anymore, but I took four full classes each semester so you are a full time legit student if you want to be.
ecw200212 points10m ago
for sure just start and see where it goes. i used asu to take a few classes when i was between universities and it helped me get a few extra credits. even if you don’t plan on staying until you get your degree you’re essentially giving up free college credits that would most likely transfer to other universities when you do want to leave
happypoptart07 points10m ago
I didn’t take advantage of the ASU benefit right away because I was getting my associates degree at a local community college. A lot of my courses transferred to ASU which was nice so I only had to take courses that correlated with my major. The feeling of being stuck at Starbucks because of ASU is definitelyyyy something that isn’t talked about enough!!!!! Because that’s exactly how I feel, stuck, in this weird middle ground, of having this love/hate relationship with my job because I know I’m here until I finish my degree which at one point was literal years. I’m about to hit my five year mark at Starbucks and I started ASU in the fall of 2020. I was already at the bucks for some time before starting on my bachelors and the burn out and overall lack of motivation I have felt towards my job has been a huge amount. Literally have to tell myself all of the time that I can’t go anywhere else because I need my free school and at this point in my starbucks ‘career’ it’s truly the only thing keeping me here. What really keeps me going at this point is knowing that 1. The end is near for me 2. I’m getting this shit for free!! And 3. This is what it’s all about (meaning I’m in a period of making sacrifices for my college education and you have do to what you have to do and there will be a point when it will be a thing of the past and you can and will leave Starbucks eventually). It sucks but you know what also sucks? College debt. Taking advantage of this benefit was truly one of the only ways I think I was going to get a bachelors because I don’t get good financial aid and was literally setting up payment plans, paying out of pocket, and working 40+ hours a week in order to get my associates degree. Being in this weird grey area has definitely taken a toll on my mental well being and feeling like there is no end is honestly suffocating. Just know you got this and it’s ok to feel these feelings because it’s the reality of this benefit!!! :(
False-Wolverine-74576 points10m ago
Fuck it, I think i’m gonna do it.
tatu-lasair6 points10m ago
Wait. What's asu? Canadian partner here so unsure if this is just a States thing
xerox-of-a-xerox [OP]7 points10m ago
it’s arizona state university! it’s apart of our benefits if we work more than 20 hours i think
Psychological-Tax5433 points10m ago
Tried ASU and had the worst time of it. They changed their policy just before I signed up so the cost was about the same as if I went to the community college 20min away. They never got my name right and one class blasted my eardrums because the professor didn’t re-record the audio after their dog got riled up. Mind you, none of the classes were live, they were all prerecorded.
Ibebarrett7 points10m ago
Yeah ASU itself is mediocre at best, I had one semester where one of my tests fell on a day I worked 14 hours, wasn’t allowed to take it early, told I should have read the syllabus and prepared better 😂 They’re a glorified community college dressed up as a university
Latter-Guava-47342 points10m ago
Started at Starbucks strictly for this and then Spotify benefit, I’m in my first term right now but this is my main motivation to not quit most days. I already have a loan about $9,000 from my previous college that will be forgiven. So it’d be nice to get out in a few years with absolutely no debt.
Solid_Wish2 points10m ago
I'd rather die than have crazy student loans but also the perspective is probably different. I used to be homeless so to me, a jobs a job. Could be better, but also could be way worse. Also hubs is a nurse and going back for his master's so we have enough loans to worry about in this house.
Also also having someone to walk you through the process is great for my ADHD. Never would have gone through the enrollment if it weren't for someone holding my hand.
SurfPopcorn2 points10m ago
I did ASU. I started as soon as I got the job. Did spring, summer, winter and fall courses. Made it very difficult sometimes. I gave Starbucks 3 years and it was very hard. May times I wanted to quit because of abuse. But had to stay to the degree.
If you can take the max amount of classes, start right away, it can be worth it.
Ibebarrett2 points10m ago
Once they pay for a class they won’t try to recollect that money if you leave…I left in April before the semester ended…they covered the spring semester as well as summer!
TeenyTinyYeti2 points10m ago
I applied to starbucks earlier this year to get my degree through asu, but backed out once I realized I would have needed to stay there for 4 years. Now I'm weighing my options. I don't want to stay any longer than I need to. I will study to get a certificate and apply for a desk job elsewhere. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide!
vandilor1 points10m ago
hey dude however many free classes you can squeeze out. but you can leave when you want and things should transfer for the most part. gen ed’s at least. do be aware that if you go over 5,250 usd a year you have to pay taxes out of your paycheck at the end of the semester so i think my taxes are gonna be around 400 bucks for that in december
nonogender1 points10m ago
i couldnt because i had already gotten a degree prior to working at starbucks, the scholarship only applies if you're getting your first degree :,(
elainafromthemoon1 points10m ago
yeah. i’m doing online school through another university
dlcksuck1 points10m ago
Hahahahaha the biggest reason why I applied to Starbucks was the asu benefit now I’ve been here two years and am stuck for at least two more
Honey_Ginger1 points10m ago
I was about to join the sirens clutches but luckily the government saw I'm still broke as a joke even if i work, solo i get fafsa
nikkicarter11111 points10m ago
I had a partner doing ASU, in her third year our manager cut her hours for long enough that she lost health insurance and ASU. you have to work 20+ hours per week. I think it comes down to 520 hours/6 months.
sharkiemd1 points10m ago
i’ll be 3 years in october and just graduated earlier this month!! however, i went to community college on honor society scholarships first. i’d *highly* recommend doing this instead of diving right in to asu, especially if you’re trying to do a stem major because a high GPA is gonna be a really important foundation when going into a stem program at asu. all that to say, it was hard as fuck, but so worth it.
nightimevil1 points10m ago
Yeah, also because I dislike online school. Despite working 50 cents above minimum wage for my state, I'm still poor enough to get good financial aid so I might as well go in person. College is college either way, and this way I don't have to stress even more about hours.
peepeepoopaccount0 points10m ago
Im not going because I think I would go insane if I had to do my full college career online. Already did 2 years of community college online
spicychip16-8 points10m ago
Total scam, get zero paychecks bc taxes. Unless you’re only taking 1-2 classes a semester I wouldn’t suggest
