do you think starbucks baristas will be replaced by automation (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by False-Wolverine-7457
i think it could go either way. I think reg and dt will be replaced by an ai, like how they have the mall directory / ipad cashier machine (with bare fingers swiping the screen lol) at mcdonald’s.

And with the espresso machines I think some tasks are now faster/automated compared to pre 2019 machines.

However food service is a dynamic environment and it requires a great deal of thinking on your feet and manual dexterity. so I guess it depends on how good the robots get and how cheap human labor is in comparison

You can’t scream at a robot so probably not

Can AI process things being said the way humans can?
Drinks being said wrong?
Drinks being ordered in slang or shorthand?
Drinks being made "wrong"?
What would the programming have to be for that?

Or would the AI just be on ovens and bar as the AI itself would be where stickers are routed.

I think the nuance of human interaction would prevent it, as you said OP-- AI would have to come a long way first

Oh definitely. Starbucks already has a machine that will make brewed coffees and various espresso beverages. I believe they were testing in certain markets at one point. My DM said the only reason they’re not being used now is because customers SLIGHTLY preferred human interaction. It will definitely be more common in the next 5-10 years.

with how much the corporate culture goes on about connection and thinks its an important part of their brand and the whole "third place" stuff

i do not think so. we are their face and to them their face being human is very important.

I had the same thought. Plus, if it's not "hand-crafted," it gets harder to sell a $10 drink to people. Who would want to pay that much- one time or consistently- for a coffee-like drink from a hospital vending machine? And so many of our customers lovebto yell at us; their customer experience would undoubtedly be negatively impacted if machines made their drinks.

I had a dm tell me that the mastrena 3’s are already being figured out and tested & that it’s basically going to make the whole drink for you. All you have to do is put the cup under and it’ll do all the customizations and finish the entire drink. Not sure how accurate that is but yeah

hey on campuses i’ve seen self serve starbucks in libraries where it makes some classic drinks like chai, brewed coffee, and lattes. maybe we’re heading there

a company tried but it never took off. there are just so many moving parts and ingredients needed for a robot to make all the drinks and it all has to be kept clean so the robot doesn't break. for now and probably for a while in the future it will be easier, more reliable, and honestly cheaper to use humans instead of robots.

Automation has been happening for decades, and the technology keeps evolving. Everyone from baristas to lawyers are being replaced by bots.

They probably want to (and are likely working on it) but would an AI be able to understand some ridiculous order like a half strawberries and cream and half match frap? Many of the custom orders do not fit into Starbucks current POS without an Ask Me.

They are actually trying it out at drive thru Panera breads. You’ll hear an automated voice that will take your order but there will be an actual person on standby to make sure nothing goes wrong and if the customer has questions.
