An open letter to baristas (self.starbucksbaristas)

Dear Baristas,

I am a long-long-longtime customer of Starbucks. I pick up coffee every morning on my way to work. At this point, I haven’t missed a day in over two years. Sometimes I use the drive thru, but mostly I place my order on the app and run inside to pick it up.

What I am met with, each and every day from the baristas is a smile and a warm hello. Yes, I’m a regular, so they all know me at this point. But I see them do it to everyone. Whether or not you’re asked by management to do this is beside the point. It’s genuine, and I can tell.

To all baristas: Thank you. I’m convinced you don’t hear that enough.

Morning is an interesting time of day. When you see your customers, their day has either gotten off to a good start, or a bad one. Too often you’re on the front lines of someone fighting a bad day. They make you the face of their problems and lash out, nearly always, for no reason. I’ve seen it happen.

I can’t think of a place that requires multitasking more than Starbucks. I watch you. I’m in awe of you, honestly. You are taking endless orders, all customized, while handling cash transactions and listening to gripes from customers. And the Karens. There are so many Karens.

The teamwork you display on a minute-to-minute basis is inspiring. As a hiring manager of my own firm, seeing Starbucks Barista on a resume will always get my attention. You are such a talented and hardworking group. You may argue that there are exceptions, and surely, anytime you employ as many as you do, there will be exceptions. But they are so few and far between. They are not who I’m talking to. I’m talking to YOU. Thank YOU.

Your coffee literally makes my day better. Even when there’s not enough cream. Or too much cream. Or it’s not hot enough. Whatever. It’s coffee. The world will not begin or end with my coffee.

But I know my day will begin with a smile from my barista. And for that, I am grateful.

Wow! You’re so very right that we don’t hear it enough. I started working for Sbux in 2015. I’ve worked in several different stores and with a lot of people. I’ve had wonderful customers and down right awful ones. There’s so much more to the job than anyone might think, especially for those who work the closing shift. I’ve worked years on the opening shift and years on the closing shift so I have experienced both. Mornings are full of customers and making food and drinks. Afternoon/night shift still has a lot of customers, a TON of tasks and less than half the staff. Unfortunately for the most part it’s a very thankless job. So thank YOU for this very kind letter!! You’re the customer that keeps us coming back to work. ❤️

Yesterday, during pumpkin spice launch day, we only had one customer ask us how the shift was going. He ordered an $11 drink and he got it for free.

Thank you for this post. Sometimes it feels like nobody is on our side, especially with the current trends of hating baristas. It’s customers like you who make our days better! You deserve the smiles and greetings :)

Today I was running handoff and trying to deal with the dozens of mobile orders coming in. I had a regular come in for her order, I greeted her and after waiting for a few mins she asked how long it would be. I looked at the tickets on the mobile drink bar and told her she was next in line. She got more upset and asked me a few more questions about if she was next to be made or currently being made and how long it would be and I answered all those questions. She got even more upset and ended up saying in a huff, “I placed my mobile order over 20 minutes ago.” And I just looked at her and said “yeah, so have all these people,” and gestured to the dozen people also standing around waiting for drinks.

It’s so nice when regulars are nice. But sometimes they’re only nice because we bend over backwards for them: memorizing their drink order, their name, if they come through the cafe or the drive, we make their drinks ahead of time, and go out of our way to greet them with a smile even if we’re drowning in tasks. But there’s always something that can go wrong and it sucks when even a regular doesn’t realize we’re struggling and instead gets upset with us. Today we had two no shows, a surprise visit from upper management, and we were struggling to deal with all the fall hype; all the love and encouragement and patience goes SUCH a long way. Seriously.

Me too. Long-long-long time (25 year) customer. And I always marvel at the kindness and joy the baristas display. Well now, in my retirement, I am a new-ish partner (one year) at a hyper-busy suburban store and I can tell you that the joy and kindness is completely genuine. Baristas love their customers. And it is the rare customer who spoils the mood. Thank you for your kind words. We love you right back.

@op I've been employed with the coffee giant for nearly 20 years. YOU are the reason I keep doing what I do. YOU are the reason I get up every single day and why I absolutely love what i do. Please make sure you tell your local baristas this, shoot an email to the store manager, district manager, whatever. You will absolutely make their entire month. Thanks for this. I wish more customers would understand how complex and taxing on our mental health and physical health this job can be. THANK YOU.

today my cafe was filled with 60ish people give or take a few. our store was very short staffed and today i worked two shifts back to back so i’m tired, im the only person on bar making cafe, mobile, and drive through drinks with a packed cafe, needless to say i was insanely stressed. one of my favorite regulars came in and started talking to me, we bond because i make her drink every time she comes in and i’m working because she’s so nice to talk to. she came in and had our usual conversation, and she told me that i’m doing good and that she loves coming to see me. i went in the back and cried, i havent heard a customer compliment me or other baristas in so long. thank you to those kind customers because you guys truly truly make my day

Awesome to see the acknowledgement. The best thing about my time at Starbucks was the people I met. The beautiful variety of partners working in the store and the awesome regulars or even one time customers who shared a little bit of their life. I had some really awful days, but many amazing experiences too.

We love customers like you too! Even if we’re not the best at showing it or remembering to tell you, it’s people like you who keep bringing us back to work. It takes like 1 kind comment like this to undo 10 Karen’s. Even something as little as saying “thank you” makes our day! So THANK YOU for being kind, understanding, patient and so tolerant. We appreciate you!
