Upside down drinks?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nmartin190
I am a super new barista, and training on bar stuff wasn’t super thorough, so I’m basically trying to memorize stuff myself so I can be prepared when I go on bar. I’m really confused on the whole “upside down” thing.. like for a caramel macchiato I guess it means drizzle on the bottom, then espresso, then milk, then vanilla on top. But there’s a lady who comes in every day and gets a white mocha made upside down. What does that even mean?? Milk, espresso, white mocha?? I’m confused lol help

I’ve always been taught that “upside down” is a modifier to the espresso, nothing else (and that’s how it’s listed in the app)

So for an upside down caramel macchiato, the shots are upside down and go on the bottom instead of the top. For an upside down white mocha, the shots get poured on top instead of in the bottom of the cup.

Their drink would be white mocha, milk, and then espresso on top. Also I personally still put the caramel drizzle on top for an upside down iced caramel macchiato.

"upside down" just changes the order of espresso shots and milk, not syrup. so for the vast majority of standard espresso drinks, syrup and shots go first and then milk goes on top. upside down means the syrup and *milk* go first, *shots* on top. a standard caramel macchiato is essentially an upside down vanilla latte with caramel drizzle, so when it's ordered "upside down" you're now just making a regular latte with vanilla syrup and caramel drizzle. hope that makes sense

She wants the shots floated on top.

Oh doe the upside down caramel macchiato syrup still goes on the bottom, then the shots, then milk. I usually put the rings of caramel on the bottom and the cross hatch on top cause I've never seen a standard.

So caramel macchiato upside down is essentially a vanilla latte with caramel drizzle?

One less pump of vanilla, but yes.
