Do you guys get customers that think you’re stupid and really try to pull the wool over your eyes when ordering to get it cheaper?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by 00100110100
I feel like at least once a week I get someone asking for something like “a double espresso, in a venti cup, filled to the top with steamed milk”, like???? Today got one of the worst, me and my coworker just burst out laughing after she drove from the speaker box cause I was trying for several minutes to politely explain to her that “a double espresso, in a grande cup, with 4 pumps vanilla, filled with steamed oat milk” is just a fucking latte???? If I rang it in like that as an espresso and charged for dairy it’s only like $1 cheaper so why are you doing all this, but I’m sure it’d mess with labour and inventory if I rang it how they order it
I guess I don’t know if they think I’m stupid, or if they’re just that stupid themselves…..actually I *know* some of them are doing it cause they think I’m stupid

oh my god, the venti cup of water with matcha powder and a splash of coconut milk fucking gets me. i grew up poor and generally i'm in favor of people pulling stunts like this on big cooperations, but it's always the wealthy white women that do it which is why it pisses me off

We had this chica who would pretty often order this one specific iced drink whole bunch of SF vanilla, and whip. One day I made it she sipped it and said it didn’t taste right so I remade it making double sure I did everything correctly bc I thought I did. The second one she says no it’s still tasting weird. So partner says what?! And he made her drink before so he does it. She still says no his remake it’s just tasting weird… then she asks him can you try one more time with extra SF vanilla. Yes he does it 4th attempt she says no it still taste weird today but thanks… this was 2021 so after she walked out I said to him “odd, maybe she had Covid and her tastebuds are messed up or something” sure enough she sat on the terrace and passed all those remakes to her friends (it was Covid so we couldn’t dump them). Told the SSV and she got called out… I was working at another store and she tried to do the same thing there but I recognized her and when she saw me said “nevermind it’s good”. 😂

Omg 💀
goddessofwaterpolo14 points10m ago
Why would you let her keep all 4 😭
floofxs222 points10m ago
It was 2021 Covid once she touched them we couldn’t take them back.
goddessofwaterpolo8 points10m ago
Ahhh I understand. I worked there at that time too and honestly we were in a mall and would just make them throw them away before we would give them a new one. But that isn’t feasible for other stores.
floofxs23 points10m ago
She was also somewhat of a regular so we knew her and never saw her do that before. Her and her friends must’ve cooked up the idea one day. They were high schoolers… I remember years ago skipping school and splitting a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich between 3 of us. 🤷♀️ lol
MapleLiaf2 points10m ago
So whack to me that management would get you to take them back, never heard about a restaurant doing that here I get why, but still
HypnoticPeaches1 points10m ago
Had someone in the drive thru the other day tell me that her PCCB actually had chocolate foam, not pumpkin, so we remade it and she kept the other one.
This was less than an hour after we opened. Nobody ordered chocolate foam yet, so none had been made...

“Well I don’t work at STARBUCKS, so I’m obviously smarter.”
556x45FMJ-48 points10m ago
Are they wrong though
Edit: lol I meant this in a sarcastic/ ironic way. I worked at a Starbucks for a while and then one day after it consumed every ounce of my positive energy I left. Then it all stopped. Starbucks is a terrible job where both the management and customers treat you poorly. I honestly believe that you are all awesome and deserve better treatment. But I don’t see things getting better so I would strongly recommend finding another job. Starbucks takes an unmatched amount of someone’s soul for what it pays. I left and have been so much happier
Purgatory-Maybe23 points10m ago
Yes.
SirenSimp12 points10m ago
i mean i’m 95% college educated (took break cause of covid, now at this job cause medical issues and need insurance). one of my coworkers is in law school, another just left to go to one of the best culinary schools in america, and several of us are pursuing many other endeavors outside of our 30-40 hour a week job. so the answer is yes, they are wrong.

I’m graduating next spring and working near full time hours as a lab tech in a geotech lab. Starbucks shifts in the morning, class middle of the day, lab work into the night. I may not be the smartest guy out there but I’m not stupid. Lot’s of intelligent people in my store pursuing grad school and doing great things outside Starbucks. It’d be unfair of me to assume the intelligence of customers based off the single interaction I get with them in the morning, surely a stupid request or easy self-explanatory question asked of us could be a one-off occurrence. That said, I’d hesitate to assume customers are smarter than my coworkers by default. I know you only said this as an insult, so any analysis on my end is pointless, but I can’t help but to chime in and say that assuming people’s intelligence based off their vocation is ludicrous, and if anything a sign of poor EQ (if you subscribe to that sort of stuff). I’m not a fan of EQ/IQ shit, but the concept of emotional intelligence is a fair one imo.

yeah lol, i work at starbucks to pay for my biology degree

Another story:
I’m glad we’ve stopped keeping the cream out for the customers because before COVID I had this guy that would regularly order espresso in a cold cup then fill it with milk from the condiment stand. I wouldn’t mind it as much in and of itself, the thing is that he’d literally use all the milk there and yell at you if you didn’t get him more milk fast enough 🙄
Another other story I just remembered:
After I spent 5+ minutes describing all our teas and the prices of different sizes for this customer she tells me she only has $1 something on her gift card (and that’s all she’s gonna use), so we figure out she doesn’t have enough for a brewed tea and asked if I can just get her the teabags I’m like “no worries I’ll just give you the teabags for $0.50 each even though it’s more supposed to be an add-on item”, (otherwise it’s $12 for a box of 12 teabags), so I sell her 2 teabags for $1 and she deadass looks me in the eyes and goes “okay now can you just take them and put them in a cup and fill it up with hot water?” 💀💀 I literally said no and closed the window
BatWeary15 points10m ago
literally the brewed tea at sbux is such a scam. i just bought a box of 15 jade citrus mint tea bags for a little over $6…i’d be paying $3.25 just for a grande
00100110100 [OP]18 points10m ago
🤷🏼♀️ I get it, but I only work here
Also the way she went about it was pretty ridiculous, she asked me to do that after she payed and everything and like at that point I’ve done so much to help you reading out all the teas and prices and everything, I felt it’d just be taking advantage of my labour for literally no reason so I decided no thanks lady, I’ve had enough✋🏻 you’ve got your 2 teabags for $1 go make yourself a tea somewhere else cause I’m not gonna make it for you if you didn’t actually pay for it in combination with being so needy for no reason
A single shot of espresso is $3 where I am, that’s a huge rip off too, and $4 for a cookie and they just keep making them smaller 🙄 so much about Starbucks is a rip off, I really do try to help the customers save money when I can, (example: for dirty chai, latte + chai is cheaper than chai latte + espresso, especially when they get more than 1 shot it becomes much cheaper, but even a single latte + chai is cheaper than chai + a single shot)
PeopleInMyHead29 points10m ago
I’m so tired of making refreshers with no ice and 4 cups of ice on the side. We know what your doing and I can’t understand why Starbucks doesn’t charge extra on drinks with no ice.
barlemniscate6 points10m ago
You can always not fill the drink cup all the way - just fill it to the lines.
Galactic_912 points10m ago
Sadly though it's now Starbucks policy to fill to the top line (or half an inch under it) when asked for no ice and light ice. This is why the prices for ALL of our drinks keep going up. Rather than charge extra for when a customer gets extra drink, they decided to just charge more for all of our items to not lose so much money. I don't think it's working though, if anything it has promoted more people to try these sneaky "tricks".
Now stuff like iced espresso or waters with refresher base I will never let go. If you want to use our berry pieces or refresher juice, you are using a resource that we use a lot of and often run out of because of its popularity. Honestly, same with syrups, they automatically charge 0.80 cents for a reason! So yeah, you are going to get charged for it. I don't care what the other Starbucks is doing, and if your mobile ordered iced espresso says 1/2" of cream, that means **half an inch** not **fill to the top**.
Balcantarz2 points10m ago
My store actually has us charge for no ice. We click the add juice button to do that. You can imagine how people get mad lol. We don't charge for light ice though.

When I was on drive bar I was asked to remake a caramel macchiato because they wanted it upside down. I told the window that’s fine but they need to take the drink back because there’s literally no difference in ingredient. Apparently the customer had already taken a sip and stirred it, but the person on window didn’t want to put their foot down for the drink so I just remade it anyway. I told them after the customer left that if someone tries to do that again you either tell them they can hand the drink back and we’ll remake it, but if they’ve already sipped and shaken it then there’s nothing more we can do for them.
00100110100 [OP]8 points10m ago
Right?? If you want your drink made a certain way then fucking order it that way 🙄 IMO we shouldn’t be remaking drinks because the customer “forgot” to ask for it iced (etc.)…..well that sucks for you ma’am guess you’re having it hot today 🙂 next time remember to ask for it iced and it will be iced 👍🏻💯
Edit: also…just pour the first caramel macchiato into another cup, * boom * it’s upside down now 🥴 customer should’ve just been handed a second cup to pour it in themselves, since they forgot to ask for it right in the first place
CompassesByNorthWest3 points10m ago
look I agree and that’s what I was telling drive thru, but they didn’t want confrontation or something with the person so they just asked for me to remake it. That’s partly why I talked to them afterwards so that didn’t happen again.
00100110100 [OP]2 points10m ago
Yeah I get that, sometimes you just don’t have the energy to deal with the abuse when they don’t like what you’re telling them 😔
I’m just a tiny bit of a petty bitch though…🤭 but I think I’ve got a good balance between that and being super accommodating and nice, today I have a guy his drink for free cause when he went to pay and I knocked his card out of his hand with the debit machine in DT and he had to squeeze out and grab it off the ground 😩 it was painful to watch and I felt really bad
DragonTear0317 points10m ago
Reminds me of the people who do the berry trick
borrowedurmumsvcard23 points10m ago
my manager told me to wring those in as custom teas which make them like $5 💀 I can never do it but that’s what we’re supposed to do

I had someone try to do the Berry trick and when I explained no, they said “ could I order a mocha and then a water with berries on the side?” 💀
00100110100 [OP]6 points10m ago
What’s the berry trick ? 👀
Sweet-Art210317 points10m ago
they add inclusions to regular water to make it flavored kinda
ghostymost212 points10m ago
Yes. They usually have a gold card.
[deleted]10 points10m ago
i always have this one customer that will ask for “a venti pike with extra extra steamed milk” that’s basically a misto 🗿 but you know customers are always right.
00100110100 [OP]7 points10m ago
Ya personally I’d be ringing that as a misto 🙄
fuknhot6 points10m ago
When someone orders iced espresso shots we are told to add as much ice as possible to the cup.
And like honestly when customers are ordering a bunch of iceless drinks to keep at home aren’t they worried about it tasting off.
I’ll never understand the fear they have against Ice. Especially when they order fraps and I have to tell them it’s impossible for it to have no ice

We have a regular who comes in and orders decaf shots in a venti cup filled to the top with hot water. I was on reg one day when she ordered and I told her I would have to charge her for an americano she didn’t take it well, but eventually paid for it. Now she comes in almost every day and no one else charges her for an americano??? I’m not bothered about like giving out extra hot water but it bothers me that no one else notices it lol. Not to mention she might expect that when going to other locations now.
dirtychai02184 points10m ago
reminds me of when we still had the condiment bars and carafes of half and half and skim out so people would order iced espressos then fill them up by emptying the carafes 🥲
00100110100 [OP]3 points10m ago
Yeah I’m glad we don’t do that anymore, used to have a guy that pulled that all the time but he’d get pissed at *you* after *he* used up all the fucking milk……the milk that’s there for people to add a splash to their coffee, not for you to snatch 24oz of it and make yourself an iced latte 🙄
dirtychai02183 points10m ago
my favorite thing in the world atm is telling ppl the condiment bars are never coming back <3
jennyparks074 points10m ago
If I could go back… I would be such a bitch.
philosopher_cat_lady0 points10m ago
Just ring it up how they ordered it. You're charging them correctly. That's Starbucks' fault for not setting prices that make sense.
