Question for Vets (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ew_Oxygen1124
I’m still a pretty new (1 month green bean), and I’ve been told that I’m doing pretty well for how new I am, but I find myself second guessing myself a lot. I definitely make a lot of silly mistakes quite often but I still ask to be on bat during slow times as much as possible to get as much practice as I can. I was just sort of wonder what the gauge was for where I’m supposed to be at as a barista about now? What would you expect from someone who’s only been here a month? I’m really scared of being a nuisance.

Don’t expect yourself to be a 100% solid barista for 3 months, and don’t expect yourself to be a rockstar until about 6months. You’re also well within your rights to ask your shifts and other partners where you can improve. As long as you’re not intentionally being slow and you’re not standing around doing nothing for extended periods of time, nobody’s going to find you a nuisance.

This general time frame is about right. But also, some people get strong on certain positions way sooner than others. It’s not super uncommon for someone to, say, be really solid on drive thru after 2 months but still struggle with getting overwhelmed on bar until a couple months after that (or substitute in any combo of positions). People get that.

seconding the 3 months/6 months benchmark. and don’t worry too much about the mistakes; i’ve been a barista for over a year and i still mess up more than i would like to admit. at the end of the day, mistakes can be fixed and it’s just coffee 😉

we currently have three green beans who are at about a month, and they have very different strengths and skill levels; everyone learns at different speeds and in different ways. it sounds like you have a growth mindset and actively seek out learning opportunities (eg, extra bar practice), so you’re probably doing just fine!
