why are we short staffed? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by biscuittoaster
Why are we always short staffed at my store? Well, I'll tell you why.

My manager does nothing but hire people who don't want to work and he keeps the people who call off or just plain no call no show. But those of us to try to work hard and try to help the store. He lacks to notice or appreciate. Instead dhe takes all of our credit. My store manager is terrible at being a manager. A shift who practically ran the store is now leaving, and I too have applied to other stores to transfer. I'm sick of it. He wouldn't let me take a shift from someone so the store wouldn't be left short handed, and instead told me that he didn't want to pay the over time. But when there's nobody else to take the shift, and that person was actively looking for coverage. Why was it not okay? He then later turned and asked if I would take another (longer) shift. Because someone else (who has a lovely habit of no call no show) was 'sick'. She has called out sick the last 3 Saturdays she was scheduled. She's disrespectful in the workplace and refuses to do any other job aside from bar. It isn't fair, but he doesn't see it. After multiple shifts and employees have reported it. He is horrible with his time management skills, always leaving us shorthanded. He wasn't even in the store or around for fall launch. I think today was his first day since it started. He tells us not to take 'critism' personally. But if we give any to him, he takes it personally and puts up every wall of defense he has! Turning himself into the victim immediately.

To clarify, I'm a barista who is working on becoming a shift. I applied and got next to no criticism on how I can improve. Aside from one time a few months ago he heard me swear. And in that same breath, swore In our conversation. Very hypocritical. But he isn't worth another breath of mine, and I'll gladly look and find another store.

I've already started to apply elsewhere, I just wish some store managers actively did their job.

are you certain the person who keeps ncns-ing isn’t disabled and has a legitimate reason to call out? I have a coworker who has chronic pain issues and is disabled and has to call out when it’s unbearable, and wants to be on one station so its easier on her joints. she also doesn’t like drive thru because she’s hard of hearing and customers have no patience. maybe consider these things.

She's never clarified it with anyone at work or any shift or manager. We have someone who's hard of hearing that has special big headphones to make it much easier for her to hear everything. With the normal ones she can hardly hear a thing. But the one who continues to ncns. Goes out and then posts stuff on social media about it :/ she just doesn't want to come to work.. she also has a tendency to lie about coworkers to our manager.
