How to deal with getting picked on? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by [deleted]
I’ve been working for Starbucks for over 1 year. Today, I got a documented coaching. How I see it was being written up. My sm and asm said it wasn’t a write up but I see it as one. I got written up for the dumbest thing which was marking out my drink before clocking out (which without my knowledge didn’t know was something that shouldn’t be done. It was never gone over with me when I got hired.)

My partners have been doing the same thing as well and haven’t been talked to or even written up. Also, other supervisors were the ones marking it out for me when I would order but would never tell me anything! Which rubs me the wrong way. It looks like a supervisor who has been having attitude with me (I don’t even know why) was the one who reported me because of how the statement was described. Saying I was advised about the markout policy and having to clock out. (Which was never said to me at all.) I was only advised about marking out policy.

This was never an issue until recently which I find weird. I asked other partners if they were talked about it and they said no. I would literally clock out as soon as I was marked out which would be literally a 1-2 mins after. I just feel so unwelcome when I come to work now and dreading when I have to go to work.

I’ve been picked on other things on how to to do my job when there’s other partners that are never talk to when I see how they are doing things incorrectly. There’s definitely favoritism going on for sure. I struggle with customer connections because I have social anxiety it’s not that I don’t want talk to customers it’s just whenever I try it gets to me. But that was about it until recently. I’ve talked about having anxiety but it’s never been take seriously.

I always try and be proactive/flex to help partners but I’m rarely ever praised about it. I feel like I’m always told what’s wrong with what I’m doing instead of positive feedback. If that makes sense? I think this a way for them to try to get me to quit. I don’t want to because I started school with ASU and I want to finish.

I want to file a complaint with ethics and compliance but I’m too scared that’ll make it worse. Also, my sm is friends with most of the supervisors.
I’m starting to think as well that I’m being discriminated against because I’m a poc and the store is predominately white. I’m just stuck on what to do…I never intended to do things intentionally but it looks like they see it differently. I’ve told them that but they don’t believe me based on they’re facial expression….

i’m surprised a lot of people in replies don’t actually know what is wrong about this. It is NOT allowed to mark your OWN food or drink out EVER because it could be considered stealing, same with making your own food and drink. You would be using someone else’s till to mark your things out which also isn’t allowed. My store is very strict on a lot of things this being one of them, but you would never get written up the first or second or even third time the shift lead would just kindly remind you hey don’t do that

I didn’t know it was a issue marking out before clocking out until recently when I got written up. Just because it was just a few minutes after I didn’t think much of it. I wouldn’t intentionally want to do time theft. Sometimes, I would do a task while I was waiting after I marked out just to be helpful. Which beforehand wasn’t an issue. Also, that’s probably that case of them starting crack down. It makes sense, but I find it weird that’d I would be the first person. Now that I’m aware it’s wrong I won’t be doing it again. Although, I feel it was bit too much it be written up for it. Since, I feel like I’m a good partner and try to my best to do get things done and do my job well. There are other stores in my area but they aren’t the best in terms of their scores. Also, when I would go to get drinks the partners were most of the time rude. I wouldn’t want to be a part of that. If that makes sense? I might be moving to a different area and maybe transfer to store in that area. But, for now I think I might stay for the time being. I have some coworkers I love dearly and it makes it more tolerable when I’m at work. We always say positive things to each other to get us going throughout our shifts. I just wish things were better at my store. Thank you!

i dont have any experience/input on what to do in this situation but i do know one thing, and its that free drinks + food markouts start 30 mins before ur shift, continue thru ur shift, and 30 minutes after as well. you and ur coworkers are fully in your right to mark out a drink at the end of ur shift.

I think the issue more lies with them being clocked in while ordering it.
OP - My guess, and what it sounds like, is this; you were excused to go home, so you decided to go mark out your drink and food, and then went to grab the iPad to clock out after that.
This is technically time theft bc you aren't working, and are purposefully staying clocked in. I know it's only a couple of minutes, but if management or someone wants a reason to get you, they'll look for any reason. Not saying this is the case, but just be careful!
On another note, maybe no one else has gotten talked to yet, but they're starting to crack down on this rule and you were just the first one.

And on another note, OP, decide if this store is worth it. Is there another store you could transfer to in your area?
I promise, there are bad stores out there, but there are so many really great ones too. I feel so lucky to have my coworkers every day I'm there. That's what the job should feel like.
I also understand social anxiety. What gets me through is literally my coworkers, and a handful of regulars we have. A lot of people suck, but there are a lot of wonderful people as well, find the ones that will help bring you up and keep them around. And good luck, I'm hoping the best for you!
