Is the oven cleaner safe to use? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by K-DUGZ
The directions on the bottle say to apply it while the oven is still warm, and I see people spray it on when the oven has barely cooled off. I don't think spraying chemicals on hot surfaces is safe but I haven't really done any research on what we're using to have a strong opinion otherwise. What are y'alls opinions?

The cleanser works best on a WARM over. If it's steaming and evaporating, the oven is still too hot.

Hot take but I dislike when people sprayed it immediately after shutting it off. It evaporates so quickly you can't wipe it off, and now you have dry degreaser to get off too. But if you get it while it's hot but not warm yet, then that's the magic. It's designed to be used at a specific temp and doesn't really work on anything cold (or too hot for that matter).

However no, breathing in the degreaser fumes are not good for you, and touching a 300-700F oven isn't good for your health either.

If you're worried of dying a horrible death from toxic effects, you'll be fine. Itching and skin irritation is common with degreasers and breathing the fumes will irritate the airways. If it gets in your eyes, immediately flush with water for 15 mins. If you'd like to be scared, you can go ahead and read the SDS/MSDS through ecolab (you technically should have a printed one in the back but good luck finding that). They'll have it on their website. But unless you've read them before or understand the relative effects on them compared to day to day things like ethanol (drinking alcohol) it'll sound deadly.

I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to type all of that. This is exactly the kind of answer I was looking to hear. I appreciate you.

I didn't work full time at sbux during college for nothing! The ecolab chemicals (or kay, I forget which company sbux uses) try to be idiot proof. Too many people used the red bottle on the ovens and everything was fine. Of course it's not like, something that should be done and makes the job harder than using the purple bottle, it happens and no one but the stores qasa score got hurt.

So all in all, you'll be alright as long as you don't huff the chemicals, drink them, get them into your eyes, or aren't weirdly allergic to them. The only ones I recommend being extra careful will are: graffiti remover (inhalent, skin risk because it's so volatilen and is a bit caustic), urnex that's not fully diluted (caustic, irritant), and dezcal (lots gets on your hands and your hands are wet, if they're dry, brush it off then wash the rest off with plenty of water)
