Any tips for remembering recipes, shots and syrup pumps? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CharmingCut7104
I've been at my store for just shy of two weeks and I feel like I'm really struggling trying to remember all of the shots, syrup pumps and recipes for other drinks. I know it's better for me to not be worried about speed right now but I feel as if I'm struggling. Any experienced baristas have any tips for remembering stuff because I'm in information overload! Thanks!

Make a cheat sheet and tape it on the bar!

Three shot patterns:

•“Standard:” 1:2 (Venti iced gets one extra, used for all lattes, cappuccinos, mochas/white mochas, caramel macchiatos)

•Americano: 1:2:3:4 (also used for iced shaken esp)

•Flat White: 2:3 (ristretto)

Syrup pumps: 2:3:4:5 (Venti Iced gets one extra)

Cold Brew Syrup pumps: 1:2:3:4

All drinks get the same number of pumps and shots. Iced grande van latte, iced grande pumpkin spice, hot grande white mocha, hot grande hazelnut cappuccino. All get the same number of shots and pumps.

Iced grande van americano, hot grande van americano get the same number of shots and pumps

There are two exceptions:

Caramel macchiatos get ONE LESS pump of Vanilla as the base syrup, shots go on TOP

Matcha lattes get ONE SCOOP LESS than syrup pumps for their respective size

That is!

when i was a green bean i would look at the mobile app when i was at home. id try to look for patterns to try to help me remember them and it also helped me to realize what drinks are slightly different than the rest of the drinks (like honey citrus mint gets different amount of syrups then the rest of the drinks)

My trainer made a sticky note with the deets on them that I could keep in my apron and pull out as needed

I train people and everything is numerical order.

•Shots (Short-Venti Iced): 1, 1, 2, 2, 3

•Syrup (Short-Trenta): 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

•Cold Bar for Fraps/Scoops (Tall-Venti): 2, 3, 4

•Cream Cold Brews pumps Vanilla (Tall-Trenta): 1, 2, 3, 4

I can’t promise this will help lol but I really only memorized the shots: 1:2:2 or 1:2:3 for iced. I had to get creative for everything else. Since Venti starts with a V (the Roman numeral for 5), Venti gets 5 pumps, then count down from there (grande 4, tall 3), except iced venti gets 6( I did have to remember that). For scoops (like matcha), there are two Os in the word scOOps so it starts at 2 then count up from there 2:3:4. The Carmel macchiato’s exception was easy to remember because it was explained to me that the caramel drizzled on top adds sweetness so it doesn’t need as many pumps (therefore one less pump of vanilla per size). Frappes are labeled on the base so those were easiest to remember. anyway. Sounds/looks complicated, but it’s how my brain functions lol also, Im one of those that has to understand why behind everything, so I did the math. For our basic recipes it’s an average 1 pump per 4 oz of beverage. Anyway, I hope I didn’t confuse you even more!
