Mental Health (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Most-Toe-7520
Has anyone’s mental health gone down from working at Starbucks ? Ive worked in fast food, retail, etc. But recently i got diagnosed with moderate anxiety & all the symptoms & signs started after i joined Starbucks. I used to love working there but lately i breakdown every chance i get bc the environment has gotten so toxic especially after we got a new manager. Im sick & tired of the environment but rn i cant risk quitting. Genuinely curious if anyones mental health was also affected from working there.

I've had to reduce my caffeine intake, it helps a bit. Trying more green teas and reishi mushroom for stress management. I notice my stress goes up the more caffeine I drink, which I sad because I love espresso 🥺

If you stay with the company look into lyra. If not then it’s not worth your mental sanity. Don’t go crazy being a wage slave. I get it though if you do it bc you need to

my mental health was and is already down horribly before I started working at Starbucks but I needed a job and have bills to pay, but at the same time I also like working in a coffee enviroment/cafe setting, i find making coffee/drinks fun to me but at the same time can get stressful

I had maybe a few panic attacks before Starbucks but as of starting in May/June my panic attacks has become a constant worry for me to the point I recently had gotten a stress stomach ulcer I think it has a lot of other things in my life that caused the panic attacks but Starbucks is definitely not helping

Definitely. I started in December of last year and a multitude of things have happened since such as the passing of my father in January, started graduate school, multiple new managers, etc. This all and other things are just a whole lot and I want to quit so bad.. 🫠

My mental health working at Starbucks has hit a bad place, after I had been doing so much better. Starbucks is truly a nightmare for everyone.

When it was my main job yes—and this was when starbucks didn’t cut hours etc. Now part time? Better. Not bad

Yes. I didn't realize how bad it had gotten until I left. I've been out for almost 4 months now and it feels like I can breathe again. I'm even in the process of lowering my medication dosage with my psychiatrist.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think everyone reacts the same or anything, ymmv and all that, but Starbucks destroyed my mental health. It wasn't amazing going in, but I spent years with the company and had at least weekly panic attacks. I cried in the shower after work at least once a month.

I've heard it from my coworkers too, especially during the beginning of the pandemic. Casually expressing that sometimes they hoped they'd get hit by a car on their way into work so they could take some time off, or even that well, if they got COVID that would be okay because they'd get 2 weeks away (when we were still doing that).

I hope you're able to care for yourself as best as you can. Be patient and kind to yourself.
