my ssv laughed at me when i reminded him i needed a last break 20 minutes before the end of my shift(self.starbucksbaristas)

rehire here. as of today i've officially been at starbucks again for one week. so we had a difficult shift today. 2 no call no shows, and the next closest store was closed. mobiles were about 45 minutes behind the entire day and my drives were averaging 15 minutes unfortunately. well i hurt myself the other day and have been struggling walking properly, which of course isn't super helpful for this job. between doing solo drive, warming, and flexing register while hobbling around in pain, i was of course exhausted. well, the afternoon ssv had started 30 mins before the end of my shift, and since i'm having a hard time standing for long periods of time, i just reminded him that i needed a last 10 before i left in 20 mins and he just... laughed at me? i just went back on the floor at that point bc i was too exhausted to even react honestly
idek what to say. like i was trying so hard and pushing myself despite my injury! didn't even ask for extra breaks or anything despite my sm offering them. my feelings are just hurt i guess. this guy is my least favorite kind of shift - the very by the book, stick up their ass type i dealt with last time i worked here that i just can't stand. i already was getting bad vibes from him and he'd already been kinda rude to me before, i guess this just confirms he must dislike me or something, idk how since like i said i've literally only worked here for a week and have probably only seen him specifically for maybe 2 hours. sigh. i'm enjoying my tenure at starbucks a lot more than last time already but this is the one aspect that has really been disappointing and upsetting for me.

That sucks I’m sorry. If I were you I’d mention it to the sm. You deserve your scheduled breaks.

thank you. i've been considering discussing it with my sm. i think i might wait and see if he gets better/worse over time and go from there

Don't wait, bring it up.

As a shift, I know I have had unsatisfactory reactions to certain situations myself. Breaks in particular, when you have inherited the shit show of a play for that day, can cause much stress. On top of walking in to craziness, breaks aren't caught up and that person that you needed for a role or task is gone. The last 20 minutes of the shift and sometimes it takes a person a while to go on their 10 anyway. So then it's a matter of trying to catch up (back ups, other breaks, etc) while also being hit with drinks.
A bunch of not your problem stuff happening here, let's be real. All you need is your last 10.
But I say that to say that I probably would've laughed too, not at you, but just to keep the tears from coming lmao. This job can be super stressful. I'm sorry you didn't get your last 10. Definitely see if it is a pattern. Mistakes happen and I'm sure he wasn't trying to target you (unless he was. Then by all means go to your sm)

i've been manager at my old job for 2 years and have been in charge of some truly horrible days. i know what it's like and have said the wrong thing before too for sure. but man this guy has already been shitty to me a couple times now and i guess this incident just confirmed to me that he straight up dislikes me for whatever reason

I know a lot of times ssvs will act that way because they feel like the baristas think they can’t run their breaks(shift) properly. So to tell a shift that you’re due for a break when they already know is kind of like a customer asking for a straw for their dome-lidded drink when you’re about to grab the straw anyways. It’s still on the SSV to communicate and check in on you though. That may be the reason why he acted that way and you shouldn’t be afraid of expressing how you feel about it. It can only help him with communication and others who feel the same way. Hope that helps:)

i get that, but i really needed that break like i really am struggling to stand my entire shift especially since i was all over the place yesterday. it just felt like a slap in the face to do all that and then get rejected for my last 10 when i desperately needed it and was genuinely in pain

SSV here. Pretty rude to laugh at you for it considering the shift you had prior, but a think I tell my baristas and try to drill in their head is that you have to stay on top of your breaks and meals.
I’ve missed two breaks the past two days due to short staffing and an insane amount of customers. My SM doesn’t believe in breaks during peak but I believe in my stress levels and health first. Speak to your SM about this issue (the no time for breaks part). Also in most states I think it’s a labor law type of thing depending how many hours you work, but nonetheless you deserve a break still as a human.

LOL, also this may make another SSV cringe but not me. Coach them on how to appropriately respond to that scenario instead of hurting your feelings. Us supervisors should know better and I myself have made inappropriate responses plenty of times, it still doesn’t make it right.

Were you upfront about the injury being the reason you needed to sit down?
I get that people are entitled to their tens regardless but I usually get pretty annoyed when I come in and someone wants a ten 20 minutes before they leave. At that point it no longer has a function as a break and it’s just inconvenient for me (I mean I let them do it without argument but I’m definitely annoyed). I’ve also had plenty of morning supervisors who wait for me to do some last tens, despite everyone who gets one leaving soon. Like I said, people are entitled regardless of how I feel about the situation, so I’d honor it. I can however sympathize with that reaction to some extent because thats fucking annoying (although it’s not on the barista at all that they weren’t given one earlier).
However, if someone had an injury I definitely wouldn’t even be silently annoyed with them. I’d just be upset they weren’t given one earlier. I can’t tell from your post if you communicated but clear communication might help in these situations, even if you’re entitled to it regardless of how the closing supervisor feels.

Did you actually have a scheduled break? Like, you needed one per standard? Or did you get one earlier, and want another to take a break?
devotionofsuspectx [OP]9 points10m ago
well i worked 8 hours today. not sure how it works at your store, but at mine you get one ten before your lunch and one after your lunch
Megaman32204 points10m ago
Yea same here. Well if that's the case and you needed that last ten, that sucks, but your shift during the majority of your shift should have taken care of it. Next time that happens, stay for an extra ten minutes before you clock off. What are they gunna say?? Get your paid break

it was screwy bc the morning shift left at 12 so that would've been to early. the ssv covering from 12-2 wasn't even supposed to be in today and pretty much brushed off most things by saying "ask pm ssv how all he wants it once he gets here" so honestly idek. my store was a mess today but it was just frustrating bc i genuinely don't understand why he reacted the way he did
