How to quit (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by a-viewer
I'm going to be putting in my two weeks soon and I'm curious if anyone here has any advice. I'm not sure how to best go about it. Should I tell my manager in person? Write a letter? A text? I'm unsure about what method is appropriate and looking for input from anyone who has quit or also plans to soon.

I would tell you manager and deliver your letter at the same time, with the last date you want to work on there. It’s the most professional and polite way to go about it.

Save a copy of the letter for yourself as well.

People at my work have just been writing letters and leaving them in the back with their names

I like how you say "have been" noting how this is a frequent and ongoing thing lol. Starbucks and their insane turnover rate. That tracks for sure

SM or ASM canned response will be that they need it in writing, with it dated and stating when your last day is (keep a copy for yourself). Might as well present your SM with it in writing when you tell them. This is just a courtesy, and my advice is to avoid giving any additional information about why or where you’re going. If it’s true, maybe thank them for the opportunity to work there and what you were able to learn. Again, no reason to add any flowery language that is actually the opposite of how you feel.

SM has every right to let you go immediately, as you have every right to leave before the intended date if there is any sort of retaliation or bad blood. These are courtesies extended to those deserving. Use your best judgement and good luck with your future endeavors. We support you!

This is super helpful! Thank you. I'm anticipating being asked why and stuff. All my friends know how I feel but I can tell from my SM's perspective it will be very out of the blue. I'm a frequent opening key holder too so I know she'll be in a bit of a tight spot to find a replacement quickly. Especially knowing that opening shifts are generally not a popular time slot.

Thank you for your support!

Glad it helps! Yeah, most stores I’ve been in will have the rumor mills going as soon as it’s known, but if you ask the people you’re close to to keep it to themselves, keep it vague to the others and respectfully show up and do what you can, you’re going above and beyond what’s required. Unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of SSV’s try to do the right thing only to have their last days made miserable. Don’t take any crap, because you are doing THEM a favor.

Generally a written note with your end date is normal with any place of employment. If you're ever uneasy about it, you can take a picture of the note on your boss' desk, send that picture to them, and keep a screenshot of that message.
