Awful day. Customer made me cry (Rant)(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tabloidjunkiee
This maybe something stupid to cry about but I am new, fresh out of training, never experienced a rude customer (this is my first job) .. I was put on window (DTR) and this lady comes up, I greet her and repeat the order just to make sure it was correct and then hear her say “no I didn’t” & I thought she was talking to me, so I said it says here that you did and she had the most nastiest attitude saying she wasn’t talking to me and was on the phone, holding it up giving me a look like I was dumb and that it was obvious..Mind you I’m not worried about what’s going on in her car, apparently she had Bluetooth speaker on and was talking , I told her I had no idea and she called me stupid to her friend or whoever was in the passenger seat, like I was suppose to know she was on the phone?, and she’s like “just give me my drink” I handed it to her with a straw and she snatched it from my hand and I held back my tears and proceeded to say have a nice day before she drove off. I regret giving her the drink and not getting the manager ( I told the manager after) but This is really bothering me.

My manager always tells me to just let it roll off your back. A lot of customers tend to feel like they are the only ones that matter in the day. Don’t let one rude person ruin the shift. It happens all the time. Just make sure they are gone before you talk trash about them.

Ive been with the company for nearly three years now. I still remember going to the back to sob from sensory overload after a car forced me to refund their super modified $50 order because they didnt realize until the end that I didn't use the stars they didn't tell me they wanted to use.
Im a shift now, and the best thing you can do is try not to let it bother you. It takes a shitty person to scream at someone making a min wage food service job. The most valuable skill to learn is how to take a breath and let it roll off your mind once you clock out.
However, if you find it more detrimental to your mental health to deal with customers like this on a day to day basis, theres no shame in leaving the siren. The customers are the worst part of this job, and they don't get better.

i like to think of them as NPCs, they aren’t real and i’m just playing barista simulator for a few hours

I mean… if we’re being real the customers literally are NPCs. Not only their level of functioning but their habits and routines… you can’t convince me they are real

It is NOT your fault. Nobody gets that mad over a Starbucks drink. She almost certainly was having a bad day and decided you were the one to receive her rage. And it fucking sucks, dude. I feel you, I've had a similar experience. Here's my personal motto for these kinds of situations: it is what it is, you know?

You deserve to be treated with respect just like customers do. Next time this happens tell your manager and if they’re worth anything then they should stand up for you. Being called stupid by a customer is unacceptable and I know a lot of managers that would let the customer know that.

Had something similar happen to me by a partner. Said partner has a black apron, and is usually a shift lead, but in this case he was training a rehire. I’m a 4 month partner. I was on drive bar, doing my thing, standing in front of the ice bin. He’s on lobby bar, and keep in mind, he also has his own ice bin and syrup shelf. He reaches over to my? ice bin, and snaps at me while I’m filling up like 3 chai lattes with oatmilk going “WHY ARE YOU OVER HERE?” followed by a scoff. Not the biggest thing, but it hit a nerve in the middle of already being thrown around in peak.

I'm sorry that that happened, though there are lots of nice customers there's always some particularly nasty ones that I will cry about after the shift. If it helps I just try not to take anything personally and just assume they're just directing some anger from their personal life my way because I'm the one they feel like they can do that to. Also, it's kinda fun to wait till they're gone and tell your coworkers about it or laugh with them if they witnessed it too. You're not stupid, you're not alone and I hope you have a great week!!

I worked a really long time in customer service jobs as a supervisor and a manager before I came to Starbucks. When I first started with the Siren, I totally cried. People have a way here of belittling you that is really unfair. I’m glad you talked to your manager and have thought of how you would handle it better next time. You are not alone. 💚

A lot of people are going to be really rude, but some people are going to be really amazing and there’s going to be a customer one of these days that gives you one of the best moments you’ve ever had. It’s stressful and don’t feel like it’s dumb - it’s normal to feel bad when someone treats you poorly.

All my shifts are really good at stepping in on these types of interactions, definitely tell your SSV next time something like this happens. Unfortunately this is really common, people talking on their phones when you’re just trying to do your job. Which by itself is kinda rude, in my opinion, but this was beyond kinda rude. I hope your next shift is better!

When I get a ride customer my first instinct is to get mad and be rude back. Most of the time it shuts them up. Man up and stand ur ground. Some good replies next time would be: WELL MAYBE DONT BE ON UR PHONE AND ORDER. or just squeeze the drink next time. 🤭
