is a UTI a valid reason to call out(self.starbucksbaristas)

I feel bad because I just had time off for the entire weekend, but I managed to get a UTI during my break 😐 I got meds today but still feel pretty shitty and cannot hold my pee for anything lol. I get them a lot and they often progress to the point of fever and peeing blood… not there yet but I’m worried about it getting to that point when I’m working tomorrow
I feel like it’s too late to talk to my SM about it but I’m scheduled for 7:30 tomorrow morning. If it doesn’t get worse I could prob tough it out but really do not want to deal with having to pee every 30 minutes on the floor. Should I call out?? The one other time I’ve ever called out my manager was soooooo passive aggressive about it, and we’ve been having lots of call-outs lately so I’d feel guilty. If I do call out I don’t know how to communicate that I’m “sick enough” without getting into TMI territory 😭 what would you do??

Send a message now ! It’s enough time ahead and your reason is completely valid. You don’t need to go into details but you could ask for a doctors note which usually is pretty vague and just clarifies you need time off to recover

You can send a message as an attempt to help your manager find coverage, but you also should call the store phone at the earliest possible time that people are at your store, otherwise your manager could count it as a ncns if they wanted to be strict.

NEVER tell a boss what you're sick with. They're legally not entitled to that info. "I am sick" is enough and can spare you having to get into details (unless it's covid related)

Yes. Absolutely yes. You are sick.

as a rule, if you ever think "should i call out", the answer is yes. they don't need to know why

Yes absolutely. I actually just had two back to back utis that ended me up in the hospital. Ultimately it was a different issue causing them, but I called off total of three days (the issue has been on going for almost two months). I wish I had called off more days. Working with a uti SUCKS

Yes let them know with as much advance as possible! If you WANT to, you can even help find coverage for your shift, but it’s not necessary. A UTI can be really simple and easily treated with OTC meds, or it can fester into a really bad infection. You know your body best. I wouldn’t go into detail about what is wrong with you, and they shouldn’t ask. If they do, tell them it’s really personal but it falls within the guidelines of what isn’t safe to be at work with. Take the day to do everything you can to feel better, take care of yourself, and hopefully you’ll be feeling okay enough to work your next shift.
