not a manager but tries to order us around… am i wrong to be mad? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Angelalmanzar21
the title is self explanatory.. i just want to rant about a partner that loves to ask people to do stuff for them and normally i wouldn’t have a problem with it! we ask eachother for favors all the time like “can you please get me some ice” or “if you’re not busy can you get me this” or whatever.

it’s the way they say it that bothers me, like interrupting a task im doing to ask if i want to make a drink in their queue or helping them with some other bs and don’t even say please or thank you. like today (lets call them steven) i was doing breakdown and steven was on hot bar. steven goes “can you bring me some 2%?” im pretty fed up with steven telling me what to do when they don’t have the authority but i don’t want to create unnecesary conflict and just say “wait” then i look over they don’t have any stickers! i couldn’t believe the audacity of this person to ask me to do something while im clearly busy and they’re not. then they go to drive thru and take a whole order… like you could’ve grabbed your 2% in the 10 seconds it takes to walk to the fridge and then to hot bar… i don’t want to make this extra long but this isn’t the first time steven tries to order me and other partners around and it’s getting on my nerves. i also wanna point out that we’ve been working here longer than steven, am i tripping? i don’t want to be that person that is unreasonably mad at something but this person is really getting on my nerves and i don’t have any problems with any other partner in my store or any of the 2 other stores i’ve worked at

i could see how this is annoying but to be fair bar is technically a planted position where as breaking down is kind of under like a customer support task i guess.

in the afternoon at my store no one is on support you’re supposed to do whatever your planted position is and the closing tasks for it yourself which includes stocking your own fridge

Asking someone to do something is not ordering around and this job is team based so yes, partners can ask for people to help with things. You do not need “authority” to ask for a hand. However, if they have no stickers and you’re busy.. you could tell them that you’re busy and point out they have no stickers. Or simply just say that you’re busy and if they could grab it during their next period of “down time,” I like to call it. If you’re uncomfortable with doing so, notify the shift on the floor of the situation and they can make sure the bar person is utilizing all of their free time for their needs.

if you’re not doing anything and see me doing something and still ask me to do something else on top of what im doing how is that not ordering me around? not even the shifts do that at my store. i didn’t want to make the rant extra long but this has happened more than a few times with different partners too, the way they say it is also rude so that doesn’t help

Well is he asking, or is he ordering you to do something? Those are two very distinct forms of communication. Like I said, it is okay to ask for help… but it is also your job to communicate with him or if you’re uncomfortable, having the shift communicate with him, that he needs to do those things for himself if he’s not busy and you are. I’m not trying to say you’re in the wrong

If he is straight up ordering people to do things, he definitely should be sat down and talked to by an SSV or SM.

Is bar not a planted position at your store? Our bars never leave the mat if they are on hot bar. He could definitely ask nicely but I'm used to doing errands for the bar because they aren't supposed to leave.

for closing at my store at least we only have like 3-4 people, if you need something you gotta get it yourself, theres no station that physically can be planted because theres so many tasks that need to be done in between orders. sometimes even we have one person solo-drive-bar, while the other one does floors/other tasks, so it’s absolutely not possible to remain planted anywhere. if you remain planted and don’t do tasks in between customers then you’re gonna get in trouble for not doing anything.

this. and yesterday was clean play so we had even more closing tasks than normal

We had a partner that would take literally 2 hours to do (and i shit you not) two refresher back ups, 2 caramel drizzle bottles, a cube of sweetcream, and 3 inclusion backs up.. all the while they are on drive on their phone. If they are actually doing backups, they will then ask us to get them everything. This is during a time of like an hour going by, and we have maybe 2 customers. I understand its a planted spot, but in our store we are a little understaffed for closing. And it was slow.

Edit: for got to add they only do half the task and ask for someone to finish up for them. Literally every time. So that means half a refresher done, they will ask us to fill it with water and mix it and put it away. While they work on the next one? Idk. Its stupid.

Bro, if I were you—After like three times I’ll straight up tell him can’t u get it urself? Ure standing there doing nothing. There’s no support and u don’t need one now either. Coworkers like that are parasites and I don’t feel the need to be cordial or professional. I literally treat them like air
