Questions and a tall rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Original1000
I’ve been a barista for a few months now. I’ve only called off twice for being sick. Each time I’ve called off, I called my SM. My SM is out on vacation. I never got to talk to him about a scheduling issue that’s coming up. Now this stand in SM says all call offs need her approval. And that we need to find a replacement. That’s never been a requirement. Is that even our responsibility?
She said if it’s not an valid reason she’s not approving it. And if we don’t find coverage, she’s following up with corrective actions. I wholeheartedly don’t agree with her at all. She said no expectations. And she doesn’t want us contacting our SM while he’s on vacation. We wouldn’t contact someone who’s on vacation. But the fact that she felt the need to say that, irritates me. Saying she’s “protecting his time away.”

My questions are.. is it our responsibility to find coverage when calling off? I’m pretty sure that’s why we call off hours before scheduled to work so they can find someone. She can’t fire me for not finding a coverage, right? Or I can refuse the corrective actions? Because I’m not accepting corrective actions when I’ve been scheduled outside of my availability and have a therapy session. I wouldn’t be able to make it either way. I’ve already let few coworkers know this

According to the Partner Guide page 54 “A partner who misses more than three consecutive days of work may be eligible for leave of absence and/or Short Term Disability benefits…” and “Protected Sick Time (PST) is job-protected and is not included doe consideration in any absence policy.”

According to the Partner Guide page 27 “In the event of an unplanned absence, e.g., the sudden onset of illness, injury, or emergency, or when the partner is using paid sick leave allowable by law, the partner will not be held responsible for finding a substitute. The partner is still responsible for notifying the store manager or assistant store manager (or partner leading the shift bid the manager is not in the store) of the absence prior to the beginning of the shift so coverage can be arranged if needed.”

Can you explain what she can and can’t do? Since my SM is out. Is being scheduled outside of my availability enough? I don’t think I can find someone to cover. It’s a morning shift and a lot of them have school

Are you calling out due to illness/injury? If so, not your problem to find someone to cover for you, nor can you be written up for it. You’re fine, and your manager/supervisor is violating Starbuck’s policy.

If you are sick:

Call the store BEFORE your scheduled shift. Then stay home and get better. It is not your responsibility to find someone to cover you, and you cannot be written up. If you are reprimanded/threatened with a write up/written up for calling out sick and not finding coverage for yourself, contact Ethics and Compliance and your DM. Feel free to reference the Starbucks Partner Guide as I did in my previous comment.

No, I’m calling out because I have a therapy session Friday and wouldn’t make it. I also don’t want them thinking they can schedule me outside of my availability in the future. I plan to say something tomorrow, since I don’t have her number

Availability has to be pre-approved by your SM, so even if you request it, you can be denied it. If it was approved by your SM but you were then scheduled to work during a time an approved unavailability, yeah that’s your SM’s fault. If you requested a change in availability and it was denied, but you need that day for a medical treatment, use your sick pay;

Regarding your therapy session. I will again refer you to the Starbucks Partner Guide, page 54, which discusses Sick Time use “to obtain a medical diagnosis, care, or treatment; or for preventive medical care or routine medical appointments;”

It seems to me that maybe you can talk to the Shift for that day and work something out where you can work part of your shift. I’m assuming your therapy appointment should be around one hour-maybe you can get that portion of the shift covered (plus travel time etc) and then work the rest-win, win

If you’re calling out sick then you don’t need to find coverage and it’s managements responsibility to find coverage and you should use your protected sick time so that you cannot be written up or fired for time and attendance.

If you’re calling out bc you forgot you had an important event or other various reasons that aren’t considered valid call outs according to policy then you are expected to be at work at your scheduled time. It would be your responsibility to find coverage and you can be written up or fired for time and attendance if you don’t.
