I have been a Shift Supervisor at a high-volume drive thru store for the past 5 months. Tomorrow, it’s my first day of opening at a cafe store and there isn’t another shift supervisor/manager until 11am until I basically leave. I have no idea of how much to make of what and I’m so scared I’m going to seem like I’m incapable of doing my job because I’ve literally never worked in a cafe store. Not to mention, they have the old espresso/ovens and I haven’t used them before. Anyone have any tips? I’m so excited though because the partners seem so nice

Rely on your baristas. I’m certain someone opening with you is gonna know what regularly goes on at that store. Ask around and find out.

This. There was one time I had to open as an SSV at my store. I'm normally a mid/closer, but all the openers guided me on everything from opening tasks and when to give out breaks. Just ask and they will help!

Every store is quirky but remember the basics stay the same as far as Clean, Safe, Ready, cash management and deployment go. Of course you don't have to worry about DTO/DTR but depending on volume and channel mix, may have to deploy an extra POS or MOP partner. Playbuilder will help you make the play and give you the daypart times for CSR tasks plus when peak is (since it may be later than you're used to). Leverage your resources on the iPad but most importantly the other baristas and just remember to celebrate your first day when it's done!

The basics are the same as your store! I work in a cafe store and let me tell you I feel the same way about drive thru stores. You have one less position to fill. Be sure to use play builder on the iPad! It’ll tell you exactly what positions you need to fill. Just utilize all of your tools and do things the same way you would at your store. Ask the other partners for help/how they normally do things. It might be a little bumpy but that’s okay. You’ve got this!

Batch guidance app on the iPad should be able to help you out as far as how much to make of what! Don’t be nervous! Being a borrowed partner always seems scary before the shift begins but i promise you’ll fall into place and worst case scenario you’ll just feel a little awkward. If the partners are nice that’ll make a world of difference, too! I’m excited for you <3

Odds are there’s a basic plan as far as “we usually have one person do XYZ and one person do ABC and first tens are given out at blah” so ask your baristas :)
When it comes time to deploy for peak, load up play builder and then ask your baristas if that looks semi normal. And chances are they know who the aces are at which things.

I’m a day late, I hope everything worked out for you this morning! There’s some really good advice on this thread for anyone in that situation later or if you end up working in another store. Ultimately, lean into your resources, like batch guidance, play builder, sirens eye, and even my daily or the baristas familiar with the store for past shifts helps me see what needs and demand may be. Also looking at the last weeks COSDs to see what the flow is like in that store to get a good idea of when to do things. If you ever can’t get the pull done by 11 I like to put the numbers in and write them down and submit the pull and you can do it when it’s more convenient. But ultimately the basics are the same with opening tasks. Trust your gut and if things go wrong, lean into your skills with using the ACT model to think in your feet and fix issues. Change is stressful but that growth mindset is so important when facing new challenges. Take it one step at a time and remember it’s just coffee. For you and anyone else in these situations, good luck!! I’d love to hear about how the shift went!!

I thought it was against company policy to open alone. It was when I worked there

that’s correct, but based on the post OP probably means alone as in “no other shift/manager” not alone as in “no other barista(s)”
