If you’re infectious (meaning contagious) then you should not be working. As for the no call, if you did not call before or at your actual shift time then you may still get the no call no show. You were not immobilized or dealing with a *major* medical or other emergency so they may have the upper hand on that.
The “disappointed in you” bullshit I would just ignore. They’re guilt tripping you and none of this is your fault.
greenChainsaws34 points10m ago
listen to this person op. this person is saying smart things. you work in food service which means your boss cannot afford you coming in contagious.
jazzysoranio1 points10m ago
I second this
DreyaNova48 points10m ago
Fuck em, they set a stupid policy, you abided by that policy to the best of your ability after leaving the ER you went to because you’re sick.
They want to guilt trip you about that? Maybe they should scrap the “no texting” policy instead of treating you like you’re not a person who might sometimes have needs and a life outside of work.
I don’t think you deserve the “no-call no-show”, and I definitely don’t think you deserved being gaslighted by a minimum wage employer, particularly when it’s your first job. SMH, why can’t managers see people as humans anymore?
Caffeineadick20 points10m ago
Thank you for saying this however I definitely deserve the no call no show, I called an hour into my shift due to over sleeping I will accept that but I also don’t think it’s right how they handled it
DreyaNova16 points10m ago
With the mitigating factors, I would have excused it. It’s not like you took off to the beach for the day. Just try not to take it personally, this job will crush your spirit if you let it.
I hope you feel better soon, throat infections are awful, I hope you can get some rest and some chicken soup.
vanilllacakez10 points10m ago
Hopefully they’re prepared for multiple call outs then, tryna get a sick partner to come in. Next time it’s best to call out the night before but it’s understandable if you wanted to see if it would improve overnight. You’re sick, you’re a human you can’t control that sometimes, them being “Disappointed “ is immature on their part.
Caffeineadick7 points10m ago
I was unable to call in last night, we have a zero texting/calling manager policy as well as I only found out at 2:30am
Chondodo7 points10m ago
For future reference give them as little info as possible. “Hey sorry I’m calling late, i had to go to the ER last night and they told me to rest up. I would’ve contacted and tried as soon as I could.”
It’s their job to find coverage and if they punish you for being in the er the night before, you should contact your local District Manager.
Edit: Whenever you’re at a doctor ask for a note for work as well.
Caffeineadick3 points10m ago
I have a doctors note! I’m getting my mom to drop it off for me
Chondodo3 points10m ago
Sounds like a a plan. I’m sorry your first Starbucks experience is going like this. Bux is my 6th job and by far the best I’ve worked at, but that’s totally based on management. You are always welcome to transfer to a different store if you want to.
g_pvp_33 points10m ago
It makes my blood boil hearing/seeing other starbucks managers & shifts be total dicks. im good friends and so friendly with all my shifts, even my boss (sometimes lol). the people i work with are incredible caring and sweet humans and idk how i would have made it as far as i did (9 months so far) if i didn’t feel comfortable with certain ppl or if certain ppl didn’t like me. it’s really disheartening hearing people have terrible experiences, while mine has been an amazing one. feel better OP. your health comes first. you probably overslept because you were tired. being sick is tiring. especially being in the ER in the middle of the night.
gore-juss2 points10m ago
I worked for Starbucks for 5 years. I’ve had to come in with food poisoning, strep throat and tonsillitis. Yes, this is very very wrong and no, it is not acceptable. That being said, my experience with Starbucks is a very negative one where I would have been punished had i not come in. I was a supervisor so it did make calling out a lot more difficult, but these things do happen, and it’s absolutely terrible.
Number1Barooista1 points10m ago
I'm sorry but what manager has a zero calling texting thing. Your manager sounds like an ass
jams10151 points10m ago
ER for a sore throat. Our healthcare system is BOOTY. Hope you feel better!
RaptorClaw271 points10m ago
Was there a reason you couldn't call your manager at 2:30? I understand that at the time you still had the intention of coming in, but if you can't text them you could have called out.
Caffeineadick5 points10m ago
Yeah we’re not allowed any form of texting or calling to the manager it’s call into the store and my store shuts down at 9pm
RaptorClaw275 points10m ago
That's against what the employee handbook says. There has to be a contingency plan for calling out of a shift after hours. That plan is to call the sm. It's literally written into policy.
reclusivegiraffe3 points10m ago
that’s so stupid
DasTeufelkind861 points10m ago
Now THATS a stupid policy. What if you or another partner has an issue late at night or early in the morning? They should allow texting/ calling so the manager has time to find coverage, jeez.
wormybabybabu-1 points10m ago
Did you call in after your shift would have started? Bc if so then I'd call that a no call no show.
Caffeineadick10 points10m ago
I know I’m getting a call no show but is it appropriate for them to still try and make me come in with a throat infection??
dahmerpalms11 points10m ago
No, it isn’t appropriate. Especially with covid policy. If you say you’re sick and you can’t come in - that’s the end of the story according to the covid check in guidance
wormybabybabu-1 points10m ago
If all they did was ask you if you are coming in then you said no I have a throat infection and they so okay you're getting a no call no show then there's nothing inappropriate about that. So it depends on how the conversation went imo
