Have You Ever Had To Leave Work From Period Pain?(self.starbucksbaristas)

Partners who menstruate: Have you ever had to leave work from period pain being too intense?
It’s the first time I’ve ever had to leave because of the pain. I was about to pass-out.
I stuck it out during peak, just by gritting my teeth and trying to keep working, but I had to hold on to the counter multiple times to keep from passing out, and had to swallow bile to keep from vomiting. 🤢
I am concerned that this may cause me to get my hours cut back or that I may be penalized or something. 🥺
Is my fear groundless? What is your experience with this?
PS: of course I had already taken the max dosage of pain/inflammation relief, before realizing the pain was just too intense. 😢

I've worked with multiple people who have. I left early as well because of them. Don't fret it's a real issue, take care of yourself OP ❤️

Thanks. I’m just fairly new to the working-world, and just don’t know how this gets treated. Glad to know people are usually understanding

i have called out and left early because of pain multiple times. my pain is so severe that pain meds don’t lessen it or stop the pain. i’m always afraid i’ll need to go to the emergency room or something and i never trusted my coworkers would take appropriate action if i did need that (from previous experience). i always put my health first. if you’re going to throw up or pass out bc of the pain go home. it’s better for you and if anyone has a problem then give them a used tampon (jk don’t do that)

I passed out on the floor from my cramps. My male SM asked me to stay another 4 hours to close and said he was glad it “wasn’t serious” when I told him it was because of my cramps. I was in so much pain that I lost consciousness, but it apparently wasn’t serious enough to go home, in his eyes 💀

I had to come in late bc I passed out before my shift from them.

Usually I work through it because I can’t afford a day off, but today it was just—— 😭

I’ve had to leave twice due to period pain. It’s not fun, but the people at my store were very accommodating. Sometimes they’ll come before you realize, but I know what you’re going through OP.

I've had to leave and I've also had to call out because of intense pain and vomiting. I've never had any negative responses to this. People are pretty understanding in my experience.
(I keep thinking about going to the doctor just to get some kind of note that says I experience extreme menstrual pain. Endometriosis is also possible and is often not diagnosed right away. )
I think you will be ok though. I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok, thanks. 😌 I’ve just never had to leave for this reason before, so I was concerned.

omg. this is super weird. i literally left my shift yesterday for this exact reason. i was feeling very tired and was just experiencing bad cramps that was making me a bit lightheaded. i asked on my shifts if i could sit down for a few minutes. he asked if i was okay and i basically said it was cramps. i come back and he can tell that i’m in pain. him and another shift of mine (also a guy) found coverage and let me leave early. was very surprised but thought it was super sweet of them to let me go home because sometimes guys don’t fully understand (not all the time tho i know). they told me to go home and rest and me being emotional… made me want to cry because i thought it was very kind of them

Trans guy here, this happened to me before I worked at Starbucks and literally nothing happened. They understood I was sick. That’s all it is.
Just be honesty with your sm abt your availability and if it will suffer then. Maybe even talk to partners youre comfortable with who may be able to take shifts/cover on short notice (any store I work at always has someone who is dying for hours so just ask!)
If you do experience cut hours, that’s illegal if it’s based on this. Keep track of it and report it if you need to
Vegan_Sweetie [OP]1 points10m ago
I did notice that I was scheduled 2-3 hours less next week… so… 😭
Vegan_Sweetie [OP]1 points10m ago
My period is SUPER irregular, I don’t get it every month, and sometimes not even every 2-3 months, so it would be pretty hard to arrange coverage.

Not myself, but I have a friend who has this problem. They always feel bad but they never ever are sick and never call out and I’m just like “girl, you are ok. You have a 4 hour shift and it’s 5am. Go home and rest and have some hot coco”
OP: if you are in enough pain that you feel like you are going to vomit or swallowing it, you are ok to go home without feeling bad. It’s alright, we all have those moments

Ironically I feel like it’s other women that doubted my pain… maybe because they don’t experience it on the same level (I have many reproductive health issues)… idk. But YES I’ve had to leave work bc of it.

I didn't work at Starbucks very long so my debilitating cramps never came up, but when I worked at my previous retail job, I was always told I had to come in anyway. When I brought in a doctor's note explaining how I get bad cramps every month and would need one or two days off if it came up, my manager said it was meaningless because I could use that excuse whenever I wanted.
Also, my ex-boyfriend's mom and sister talked smack about me when I was lying in bed crying from the pain because they didn't get them that bad and they thought I was overreacting. People, dude. Damn.

I mean, scientifically—period cramps can be MORE PAINFUL than a heart—attack, so, people need to stop shaming women for period pain
nghtmrafterxmas2 points10m ago
This wasn't at sbux, but I got a cramp so bad when I worked at a restaurant job, I genuinely couldn't work for an hour. I was in so much pain, and I couldn't focus well at all, so the little that I did do was just bits of side work. I wish I would've went home, but I lived 30 minutes away, and that drive home would've been so miserable.

sort of, my period makes me super nauseas and gives me migraines and i have left early from that but not like cramps.
mariesnowelle2 points10m ago
I always left or called out bc of period pain, even at past jobs. mine are always so excruitantingly painful and i cant even stand up straight for the first couple of days so work is a no go during menstrual time
Boring_Peace_6751 points10m ago
Yep yep, I was on day one of it and it was too much to work with that kind of pain and discomfort
