do my SSVs hate me?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by stranglemefather
Hi!

I'm a relatively new barista (5 months tomorrow!) and I'm worried my SSVs don't like me. I am autistic and have moderate to severe agoraphobia/social anxiety (I have not told anyone explicitly at work) so I'm unsure if I'm being overly sensitive and misreading things (which happens often) or if I am correct on my hunch. All of my SSVs are very kind and encouraging to my face and I know I am a very quick/hard worker. I think I am generally liked and appreciated by my coworkers and have been told I learned bar much quicker than most and that I'm one of the best supports by my SM and coworkers.

This all sounds good, but my main reason for thinking that I am disliked is because my SSVs almost always let me go home early or ask if I would like to go home early (usually 15-30 min). I mostly work closings so I usually appreciate and accept the offer. I'm worried that they continue to offer it because they can sense I am autistic and don't like socializing with me. My coworkers and SSVs complain a lot about the work ethic or social behaviors of other partners behind their back but will almost never say it to their face. I'll admit, I am very awkward and sometimes interject into conversations that I'm not necessarily a part of by accident but I try my hardest not to. Another option is that they appreciate my hard work. But most of the people I work with also work very hard and I'm usually the only one that gets to go home early... Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

I think you might be overly thinking about this. Since you say yes most of the time to going home that’s probably why they always ask you. You don’t have to say yes! If they see you don’t accept it as much they probably will not ask you as much. If you learned bar right away, are great support, and are a fast worker - you’ve got nothing to worry about :)

That's true!! A lot of my coworkers are desperate for hours and are usually only scheduled 20-25hrs so I'm assuming they usually say no when asked. I'm almost always scheduled 30-35 hrs and often pick up shifts/am asked to come in early (frequent callouts and chronic understaffing) while also trying to balance schoolwork so I usually appreciate getting to go home early. I guess I was just really worried it was because they didn't like having me around. Thank you for bringing that up! It really helped!!

I’m glad I could help. Keep working hard! I’m sure your coworkers are thankful for having you :)

Based on what you’ve said, it’s likely nothing. Cutting labor is normal and just because it’s happening to you doesn’t mean you’re the only one getting sent home early. Unless you are working open to close every single day, there’s no way for you to know who gets sent home.

I totally forgot about labor cost!! That makes sense. I get scheduled 30-35hrs a week and frequently pick up shifts/come in early bc we're chronically understaffed. So probably just trying to avoid OT... thank you for your response! It definitely helped!!

I honestly love it when offered to go home early by 10-30min! I don’t think it’s a sign that they don’t like you, they probably see the hard work you put in and are trying to be nice
