NEW DRESS CODE WEEKLY UPDATE 2WKS AGO (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mar121212
Y’all please tell me someone has a straight answer on whether or not we can have colored nail polish. The left side of the update said yes, the right side said no. IM CONFUSED AND I WANT COLOR ON MY NAILS.

EDIT: I’m in the Chicago area btw if that helps
Ristrettooo 324 points 10m ago
You can’t. The wording wasn’t great, but the left column said partners had **asked for** changes to the nail polish policy. The policy still hasn’t changed because that’s determined by food safety regulations.
orangethrees333 50 points 10m ago
This is the right answer. They should have never mentioned it in their first statement because it was hella misleading. We all fell for it to a certain extent but then re-read it and realized it was all deliberately misleading.
clouds183 221 points 10m ago
you can’t have anything on your nails. its food safety.
lily-amber 45 points 10m ago
It sucks we can’t and wear gloves. I get it and want to be good safe for sure though. I’m just sad I can’t get a face and neck tattoo still! 🤣
dazedandconfusedhere 72 points 10m ago
Honestly wearing gloves is the most annoying thing ever. You have to change them every 30mins (you should be washing your hands that frequently anyways), but your hands get so sweaty in them and it’s so hard to get them back on if you don’t COMPLETELY dry your hands after washing them

I have a wrist brace and any time I wear them I have to wear gloves & I honestly don’t wear the brace as much as I should because of the pain in the ass the gloves can be
sammieduck69420 21 points 10m ago
I can’t recommend working in gloves. I did that especially when I had an awful cut in the worst part of my finger and there’s so much sweat and just festering from everything
batman_thedead 6 points 10m ago
same here about the wrist brace :/
LY-_- 2 points 10m ago
U could get the finger gloves lol
dazedandconfusedhere 4 points 10m ago
There are specific black gloves they have your SM order to wear over a brace
capsule_of_anxiety1 2 points 10m ago
I knew a partner that had his entire neck tatted up.
BlackberryOpposite31 153 points 10m ago
You can’t have anything on your nails at all. Not color, not clear, not nude. It’s not a Starbucks choice it’s a food safety choice. The polish can chip off and get into peoples food and drink which is super gross.

Saul_Gone_Man 33 points 10m ago
it is literally a food safety hazard lol
Enkeria92 33 points 10m ago
“Partners” isn’t defined by gender. You’re the one bringing gender/sex into this.
hufflepuffisonfleek 51 points 10m ago
Nail polish is a no! It’s food safety not just a silly rule Starbucks made up. It can chip and fall into things especially because of the chemicals we use.
BatWeary 21 points 10m ago
yep! tbh even if we could have stuff on our nails, i still wouldn’t bother. unless you’re painting your nails yourself why bother dropping $50+ on a cute design that’s going to end up ruined in a few days?
krym32zamoon 25 points 10m ago
It's not even confusing. One side was what has changed. The other said was what has not changed.
No nailpolish of any kind allowed.
CBukowski808 19 points 10m ago
No you can’t.
berexlali 18 points 10m ago
No you can't
ElijahLordoftheWoods 11 points 10m ago
Nothing on your nails, not even a clear coat. It’s a health department food safety issue.
nathanwp07 7 points 10m ago
No nail polish because of food safety standards
Able_Ad2652 5 points 10m ago
I wish we could because honestly I come home with less of my natural nail than I started with every day. They aren’t even long but they split off into like flakes and just deteriorate constantly.
mar121212 [OP] 7 points 10m ago
Yes! My nails are in worse condition WITHOUT anything on them. Like there’s no way acrylics with gel polish would be flaking into food/drinks, but my weak, shitty natural nails??? Not so sure
frappeyourmom 5 points 10m ago
The sanitizer will cause acrylics, gel, and standard polish to fall apart too. Especially with acrylics and gels, the binding agent will not survive the sanitizer. I’ve seen it happen at a Baskin Robbins where the manager didn’t care and a nail fell off into a milkshake when they were still spun by hand. That’s why it’s not allowed.
mar121212 [OP] 1 points 10m ago
Again, I see what you’re saying but in my personal experience, my nails have always been fine with sanitizer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ my natural nails, however, DO degrade with the sanitizer
frappeyourmom 1 points 10m ago
And like other people have said, it’s not just the nails falling off into food. The chemicals used in acrylics and gels are carcinogenic and leech into the air when heated (like when someone is working hot bar and plunging their hands into properly made sanitizer/soap sinks).
Indica-daddy 6 points 10m ago
YES. The cleaning agents we use are horrible on the hands and nails. I’m with you.
durqandat 2 points 10m ago
Again, no
purseEffphony 1 points 10m ago
It also makes it easier to deny a claim that someone's nailpolish or nail ended up in their food or drinK since it is expressed in the dress code.

An insurance fraud investigator once told me that instances where people find foreign objects in their food or drink they are often put there by the person making the claim. Usually to get a payoff from the business because it is bad press.

If the dress code prohibits it, there is one less thing to worry about.
Administrative_Cap11 1 points 10m ago
Can we have septum rings now? My store still makes us flip it up
Playful-Imagination2 2 points 10m ago
Yes. That’s been allowed for a while.
Administrative_Cap11 1 points 10m ago
My store won't let us wear them, is it written somewhere that we can have them?
Playful-Imagination2 1 points 10m ago
Should be able to find the dress code policy on the iPad. I’m not to familiar with where exactly. But I believe it’s in the partner resources app?
Administrative_Cap11 1 points 10m ago
I've told them that but they said that there is an exception to the septum piercing
Playful-Imagination2 1 points 10m ago
“You are allowed one facial piercing the size of a dime” is what I believe the official policy is.

Lol what?
greeneyedstarqueen 1 points 10m ago
Can we wear pinks. Burgundy, maroon, and mustard brown/yellows
Ristrettooo 1 points 10m ago
All colors are now permitted for tops! https://starbucks.com/dresscode
bunnysbigcookie 1 points 10m ago
yeah on the right side it said specifically you can’t wear nail polishes, stoned rings, watches, or more than one facial piercing due to food safety standards
ittybittybakerkitty 1 points 10m ago
Nail polish will never be food safe. No.
Gameb0i6 1 points 10m ago
No. That still isn’t allowed sadly. 😿
mar121212 [OP] 1 points 10m ago
Yeahhhh I’ve worked in the food industry for a long time (in CA no less, which has notoriously strict health department rules) and nowhere I’ve ever worked has anything on my nails been an issue. My acrylics/gel are not going to fall into peoples drinks lmao. Every food industry place I go into people have their nails done. I just find it strange in a way how hard Starbucks cracks the whip over it but doesn’t want to say it’s THEIR rule. Anyway!! The wording wasn’t clear to me because it was mentioned on BOTH sides, but thank you for clearing the air.
adventurelyfe 6 points 10m ago
Came here to say this. I know tons of servers, in actual restaurants, know have nails
gymnamind 5 points 10m ago
Depends on what part of food you worked though. Everything I’ve ever read abt it says food preparation is what can’t have nails or polis, but servers are allowed to have them on bc you won’t touch the food.
RyusuiJL 3 points 10m ago
If you Google "california federal food code", the state's Retail Food Code is literally the first result. And it explicitly states:

>Single-use gloves shall be worn when contacting food and food-contact surfaces if the employee has (extensive list)...nail polish...

That being said, a lot of people cite the FDA as the reason for nail polish not being allowed. But the FDA Food Code is not law. It is a recommendation that locales can choose to adopt in part or in whole as their law. So it is not Starbuck's rule, exactly. They are just adopting it as recommendation from the FDA. That and it's probably just easier to assume that most or all states/counties/municipalities/etc. do adopt the FDA Food Code as law.
BiochemistChef 3 points 10m ago
Maybe it changed but it used to state that nail polish and long nails should not be worn, but if for personal reasons the worker needs/wants them, they should work with their manager to see if using gloves is an appropriate accomodation. I had a non sbux coworker who was allowed her long nails because we use gloves anyway.

Personally, idc about nail polish. But acrylics? I won't go somewhere if the worker has them. I also wouldn't let a medical professional touch me if they had them. They allow horrible collection of all kinds of things underneath
luvloping 2 points 10m ago
I’ve also Been in food and beverage for many many years, multiple states, nail polish was never ever an issue.
Sufficient-Level-408 1 points 10m ago
Can I hop on the "nope" train? It's a food safety standard, not just Starbucks. You're preparing things with your hands. I'm not gonna say I've never had a finger accidentally touch a drink before. I will remake it 99% of the time, but sbux as a company promises that the chemicals in nail polish are never featured in a drink. So THEY could be sued for letting the contamination happen unless they issue a blanket rule.
Candyexotica -3 points 10m ago
Tbh I’ve always painted my nails and no one has ever said one thing . I’ve worn acrylics and never had someone say anything. Is this a rule?
Eastern_Effective_49 -1 points 10m ago
I went from SBUX to a third-wave coffee shop& nail polish was allowed :( (for all the ppl saying food safety) & it was somewhat of an upscale cafe so idk
LilacFlores 13 points 10m ago
Its not people saying its food safety, IT IS food safety. If your cafe doesn’t follow them doesn’t make it okay. Im glad you feel you can express yourself but it doesn’t make it safe.
frappeyourmom 6 points 10m ago
Starbucks has to adhere to food safety across the country and corporate isn’t going to have a dress code for California that bans it due to their strict food safety standards and have a completely separate standard for someone in Utah or somewhere else that doesn’t supposedly have food safety standards.
BiochemistChef 1 points 10m ago
When I was a Partner, scarves we're allowed unless banned by your jurisdiction. It was so uncomfortable having to tie it off and tuck it into my shirt and have a weird bulbous, gorilla chest. Tbh way better than letting it drag and catch things and contaminate everything. But yeah, the strictness had me always worried
frappeyourmom 1 points 10m ago
I think the main difference between scarves and nails is the scarf you can easily remove. I’m 99.99% sure most stores don’t keep nail drills and acetone on hand to remove nails if not allowed by local code.
