What does your store prioritize at closing? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bookishwannabe
I’ve just recently stepped into the SSV role and transferred to a store entirely different from my original location. There are some “fixer upper” aspects about this store, and I’m really hoping to make a few adjustments and help this place run smoothly. I’ve started to notice that there are some things that will be sacrificed in order for other tasks to be completed, and it made me stop and think about what we should prioritize here.

What do other stores prioritize at closing? Both a barista and/or another SSV perspective would be helpful!

I think each store is different. As an SM, I’d be concerned if things were getting sacrificed daily. However, if I had to choose, I’d rather walk into a clean store with backups to be made than a dirty store and backups already made. I would love to know your process of closing though to help you figure out why you have to sacrifice. Time management is my jam and I’d love to help if you want.

Your point about walking into a clean store w/ no backups vs. a dirty one w/ backups is really interesting to me! I think that in itself is a perspective that’s really helpful to consider. At this point, I’m not an opener and so I don’t know how opening goes at this store yet. But I think I’d prefer a clean store myself.

And, to be honest, there’s a lot that can be done better. That’s kind of what pushed me to post this, just hoping to see how other stores and partners complete closing. When I say things being sacrificed, I mean like cold brew not being kegged and that needing to be done in the morning. I just did my first solo-close recently and I lost track of time very quickly. But I would definitely be interested in hearing about your tips, or your store!

I prioritize tasks that would affect the next mornings business. Like anything with inventory. And then I prioritize cleaning tasks. We generally leave prep if we have to because this area requires 3 openers and one of them can work on prep.
