a question for the ssv (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by slumlord11
would you guys recommend becoming a shift? over a year+ partner (also coffeemaster&barista trainer) here and they’ve been pressing me for MONTHS to become a shift but ive been a little timid. mainly because im only afraid of being in charge (like telling them what to do) of partners who’ve been there waaaay longer than i have. any tips or thoughts are much appreciated. i love u all <3

If you like your job now, I don't recommend it. I enjoyed being a barista but once I became a shift, I hated my job. It completely changes the job.

I was a barista for about 6 months before I promoted to SSV and I’ll say that it’s definitely an adjustment. If you are good at giving advice, coaching, and handling customer situations, then you’ll be fine. I’ve been a shift for over a year and it does get tiring after a while.

There’s a fine line between coaching and simply telling them what to do. If you look at the position as someone there to help everyone else be the best they can be then you understand that line. Obviously there’s a lot more than that to the role but at its core you’re there FOR your baristas. I try to ask each of my baristas at the start of their shift if there’s a role they prefer to be in that day in case they need more quiet time. I ask my newer partners if there’s a specific task they want to get more comfortable with. Your biggest learning curve is managing your time between being on the floor and doing your SSV tasks. I’m HUGE on being on the floor as much as possible. If you’re in a store that you feel comfortable in and have a supportive team, I highly recommend going for it.

I was a barista for a year before accepting a ssv promotion. I loved being a barista but being a shift, for me, has been much more rewarding. I get to find opportunities to help other baristas learn skills and become trainers, I get to create plays that fit my team, I take great pride in the ways I’ve been able to add to our ssv team. Learning new things was intimidating at first but is second nature now. It’s a great position for me for now, and the pay differential is very nice.
