some guy came through drive and asked if we had “kid lattes” and i explained that we dont but if youre looking for the kids size we could do a short. He goes ahead and orders one (decaf tho but decaf still has caffeine) and gives it to his small TODDLER in the backseat. this kid legit still needs the whole booster seat and cant be older than 3. i felt so weird giving it to him
TLDR: guy gave a short latte to his young kid
[edit: im not judging the guy here, he was you g and really seemed to be trying his best with the kid. i definitely didnt phrase this right and you guys have brought up great points about adhd and culture that i haven’t thought about before, so thank you!]
teefquestionmark166 points10m ago
honestly you should’ve recommended him a kids steamer; i know that he asked for a latte but it sounded like he didn’t really know the menu too well.
mushmushmushmus [OP]82 points10m ago
i definitely should have, ngl i didnt realize it was for a kid but i shoulda realized
teefquestionmark29 points10m ago
that’s valid!!! would’ve probably done the same thing if i didn’t know he was giving it to an Actual kid haha
dreadheada7 points10m ago
i’ve seen vids from tik tok that a kids latte is just steamed milk. So that could be it, but very very weird
Business_Comedian8791 points10m ago
I always ask, “is it for a kid?”
EmotionalPie79 points10m ago
What is that?
rlb141518 points10m ago
Steamed milk without any espresso. Can add syrup of choice as well :)
EmotionalPie79 points10m ago
How hot is the milk? I will sometimes get my toddler the passion tea with honey, but something warm would be nice for winter!
MaenadsBloodlust25 points10m ago
Just ask it to be made kids temp! It's cooler than the usual steamed milk (and just the push of an extra button; no crazy extra work for the barista). I (25F) will often order my lattes kids temp in the winter just so I don't burn my mouth out of my eagerness for espresso-y goodness.
CalDoesMaths11 points10m ago
Kids temp milk is steamed to 130°F!
krty989 points10m ago
It’s cool enough where I can chug it on my 10 no big deal
Flowerfuls106 points10m ago
At dunkin they had the Charli drink. All the little kids would ask for it and parents would order it without knowing it’s cold brew.
I told one lady what it was and she backtracked so fast 💀 they were giving these cold brews to kids in little toddler seats in their car.
MessatineSnows1 points10m ago
this is how i am when parents order refreshers for their 5yos. like, if they’re fine with it i’m fine, but the amount of parents going “omg whoops NO” when i tell them refreshers are caffeinated…
PimpolhaBr44 points10m ago
In some cultures drinking coffee at a young age is pretty common. I've a cousin that start drinking black coffee some time between 3 and 4. You may say its bad for the kid, but so is sugar and that's not frowned upon. So...... to each culture their own.
heyitsmaria2420 points10m ago
That’s correct. I grew up drinking coffee. To us, it was a symbol of togetherness. Every time my cousins and other family members visited, coffee with sweet bread was a must at night as we all gathered to catch up on life. One of the best memories today and still is!
mushmushmushmus [OP]13 points10m ago
you have a point! i never really thought about it like that
Better_Dust_236412 points10m ago
Also people regularly give kids that age soda here in America so honestly I’ve stopped questioning people giving coffee to kids
Slow_Truth88 points10m ago
And tea has more caffeine than coffee. And it’s not frowned upon!
witchyybabe38 points10m ago
some kid (like 5? idk) ordered a venti iced caramel macchiato. not decaf. barista at the register asked his mom if it should be decaf, the mom evidently didn't care. it felt so wrong to give that to a kid.
Traditional-Emu-140330 points10m ago
I make kids “pink drinks” by shaking whole milk with strawberries and a little ice and topping with whip because kids get to hype to be like mom. You could also offer a hot chocolate or steamer but generally if a parent insists, that’s their business.
I tell a lot of them that the pink drink has caffeine like a soda when they try to get them for babies, if they don’t care then I just add less juice and hope they stop being negligent someday.
M_Karli11 points10m ago
I did those too! Another popular one was “chocolate milk” aka mocha and sfv
rudebii23 points10m ago
We’d get a little instant coffee in our milk when were kids. But it was like maybe 1/3 of a tablespoon in a bunch of milk and weren’t toddlers, more like 7 or 8 yo.
EmotionalPie79 points10m ago
Oooh same!!! My mom would mix in ovaltine as well sometimes so she could get away with less of the coffee lol.
rudebii6 points10m ago
Yeah, it was more about taste. Sometimes we’d get Choco-Milk (IYKYK) or Nesquick
eyelinertothestars20 points10m ago
when i worked for the siren we had parents who’d send their kids inside to pick up their mobiles quite often. I made a venti americano and put it out for pickup, a little girl (maybe 6-8 y/o) comes in to pick it up, my jaw hit the floor when she started drinking it
zarpoolian9 points10m ago
We literally had a guy order a blended decaf Americano in drive, and when we handed it out he immediately handed it to a kid in the backseat who could've been no older than 10...
testingaurora1 points9m ago
A blended americano? How do you even make that?
transpumkin17 points10m ago
idk i drunk single shot flat whites from 4 or 5. unmedicated undiagnosed adhd and it would make me more manageable.
geekgurl8115 points10m ago
Yup my pediatrician prefers coffee to the other recommendation which is soda. We used to give my now 10yo chocolate covered coffee beans, just a couple, to help her focus before school. It’s not like the refreshers don’t have caffeine and people get those for kids all the time, too.
CobaltLemon5 points10m ago
Adding those to my shopping list for myself. Thank you!! Currently trying caffeine and counseling to manage my brain. Those would be great for the afternoon.
honey_bay17 points10m ago
idk i mean a little caffeine is pretty helpful to ADHD kids
OkBee53115 points10m ago
was just ab to say this my brother has severe adhd and as a barista i bring him lattes occasionally and does p good at school lol
mushmushmushmus [OP]4 points10m ago
that’s true, it just felt really weird giving a kid a lattee
dregonzz14 points10m ago
Mom came through once and asked for an AMERICANO for KIDS.
I said "I can make it not as hot but I cannot recommend a heavy caffeinated drink like that for a child"
She said that was fine, just to make it not as hot (I will say, at least she was nice)
So I handed this mom a grande Americano and I saw her give it to her child in the back. Same situation. In a booster seat and everything.
I just like took her money and: 😐🙃
Absolutely wild
Superb-Coast-78012 points10m ago
Caffeine isn’t terrible for kids…and the sugar is bit Jesus people are out here feeding their kids fast food every day without judgement.
dregonzz0 points10m ago
This is false, caffeine hinders both physiological and mental development in children. As well as heightens anxiety, blood pressure, and disrupts sleep cycles when their metabolism is not mature enough to process it.
Superb-Coast-7804 points10m ago
I doubt this kid is drinking quad shot lattes on the regular. Do you understand how many cultures drink coffee or even alcohol at a young age? A short latte has a single shot. It’s not life changing enough to parent shame when we serve enough sugar to kill a horse to kids daily.
dregonzz-1 points10m ago
Lots of people do it ≠ it's a good thing
Superb-Coast-7802 points10m ago
Obviously. It’s not enough to parent shame.
PimpolhaBr0 points10m ago
Nicely said!
flowrpot9 points10m ago
I’ll never forget when a mom ordered a nitro and then proceeded to hand it to her SMALL DAUGHTER. I ran to the shift being like “uhhhh should we stop them??” Fucking blew my mind
PetMySquid7 points10m ago
“Oh yeah we have one of those! One short peppermint and raspberry cappuccino, extra hot made with heavy cream, long shot, and cookie crumbles coming right up!”
strawbrryshrtcke6 points10m ago
yall dont have babyccinos
the_coffeegirl5 points10m ago
Unpopular opinion, maybe.... I have ADHD (hyper activity when I was a kid) and caffeine hits differently, mellows me out and focus. I've been drinking fully caffeinated coffee since I was 6 months old. It not your child and you don't know the details, so trust the parents choice. If you tell them it has caffeine, then it is their informed decision.
smittenkitten875 points10m ago
People judging like they aren’t out there drinking 4 drinks in one day.
albinopigsfromspace4 points10m ago
He probably meant a steamer and didnt know the name
berniesmom273 points10m ago
i work in a tarbucks and one of my regulars gets her preschooler coffee 😅🙃 it’s always a tall decaf iced white mocha bc he’ll drink all of hers if she doesn’t get him one
CobaltLemon3 points10m ago
Listen I'd rather people give their kids coffee and than soda.
Sacred_succotash3 points10m ago
Same people who get refreshers or pink/dragon drinks for their kids.
HarleyLeMay2 points10m ago
And that’s even worse bc of the caffeine content. And the sugar.
hidethenight172 points10m ago
You can do a steamed milk with any flavouring
Wspitsamanda1 points10m ago
ok so i’ve had kids like 6-9 years old come up to the counter and order lattes, their parents just stand there and are like “yep all good”
yesterday, i saw a video of a woman saying that if you go to starbucks and order a “babyccino” you get a tiny latte for your baby for free (not true, in fact if i heard someone come up and ask for a babyccino i would give them a tall vanilla bean frap, not free) . it wasn’t a latte in the video, it was actually a short vanilla steamer, kids temp, but i’m wondering if that’s what he was trying to order for his kid?
madisonla1 points10m ago
Wait I’m sorry can someone please explain to me the caffeine in decaf shots? I thought the whole point of decaf was no caffeine… is it just less. And how much less. Half less?
Bright_Earth_8282-2 points10m ago
I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’m one of those parents that orders my kid a chocolate cream cold brew. Literally takes 10 sips and is done.
dnims243 points10m ago
How does your child not bounce all the walls all day? Genuinely curious. Hope it doesn’t rude
Bright_Earth_82821 points10m ago
It’s not very much. 10 little sips is just like a half inch off the top of it. I’d never give it to him at 6 pm. But some mornings he wants to go with me and he really likes the taste of coffee (he likes the sweet drinks, but occasionally he’ll just drink black coffee too). If I thought he’d drink more than that much, I’d probably water it down at home or order a decaf.
