Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Does anyone else hate it when baristas don't make their own drinks on their 10, lunch, or before leaving for the day? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CLEf11
We've got a couple partners who do not make their own drinks and it drives me crazy. I know that "standard" says we're not supposed to but standard also says not to double batch fraps. Make your own goddamn drinks
rtsneedshelp 63 points 10m ago
Depends on how busy we are. If we’re slammed it bugs me a bit but I also really love my coworkers so I do it anyways.. If we’re slow i love doing it because I just love doing stuff for people i care about.
Mea-fae_Owl73 9 points 10m ago
I feel that! It’s all situational. Then there is also those that try to prolong their 10 by making their own drink. But for the most part we have alleviated those situations by having the partner put their order in and then do a task while their drink is being made.
Angelalmanzar21 8 points 10m ago
lol im one of those people that make their own drink and warm my own food when im going on my breaks. not trying to prolong them i just don’t want to inconvenience everyone when i can just do it myself
Mea-fae_Owl73 2 points 10m ago
I definitely have those who do for that reason as well.
CLEf11 [OP] -13 points 10m ago
What if it's got lots of customizations?
rtsneedshelp 11 points 10m ago
Almost all of my coworkers are like that lol I still do it but again, it’d probably annoy me more if i didn’t care about my coworkers so much. This is a purely personal stance; you can still care about your coworkers and be annoyed af by it. Doing stuff for people is just how i show i care.
andersonm499 47 points 10m ago
As a ssv we coach our partners not to make their own drinks. You really aren’t supposed to and if your DM catches you that’s a write up. Just order it. Customizations or not it’s your job. And if it’s busy I have my partners order then do a quick task (I.e do a trash run) so waiting doesn’t eat into there ten
CLEf11 [OP] -16 points 10m ago
Our shifts encourage us to make our own drinks just don't forget to mark it out
goofygoobered 17 points 10m ago
My store is the opposite. If you don’t walk around to the register and mark your drink out properly you’ll be seen as annoying lmao 😭
CLEf11 [OP] 4 points 10m ago
I guess each store is different. Our store has the general consensus that "standard" isn't always what's best for the store and our manager is pretty laid back and will really only say something if he knows we're expecting a visit from the DM or other higher ups or if it's something that he actually feels strongly about plus he's gone by 3 most days
goofygoobered 6 points 10m ago
I wish I worked at your store!!
jsdod -2 points 10m ago
Your store doesn't exactly understand the concept of a chain
frappeyourmom 3 points 10m ago
If loss prevention catches on you’re making and marking out your own drinks, regardless of the situation and if your manager/ssv said you could, that is grounds for a final write up/automatic separation. There’s ways for corporate to figure out what’s happening without just having the DM/RM pop in.
CLEf11 [OP] 6 points 10m ago
Theyd get rid of everyone in the whole store? Literally all but like 2 or 3 baristas make their own drinks. It's the main reason they added the "don't make" button so partners whove already made drinks but are marking them out later before leaving
frappeyourmom 3 points 10m ago
Have you missed the union drives and whole stores get fired for bullshit reasons and corporate has scab baristas ready to go?

This is a really weird hill to die on.
dazedandconfusedhere 26 points 10m ago
I go 50/50 on making my own. If I’m clocked out for a 30 or after work, I don’t usually make it because I don’t want a customer to talk to me and have to “work” off the clock

Going on my 10 tho I don’t have time to wait so I’ll make it myself really quick or just grab water
BatWeary 5 points 10m ago
same here! i have simple drinks so i don’t really feel bad about having someone make it.
wormybabybabu 20 points 10m ago
At my store we're not allowed to make our own drinks. I think I've made my own drink (other than water) like 5 times in all of 2022
lanceofruin 14 points 10m ago
no i don’t hate it when my coworkers follow the rules, but you know what i do hate? when a coworker gets in everyone’s way and puts me behind on orders because they hog an espresso machine or an oven to make their own stuff
mypoopoosmelly69 12 points 10m ago
no? those are people i work with, id want them to enjoy their drink and treat them good, so theyll do the same for me? also if we’re in a rush they’ll understand and wont complain if they gotta wait. sounds like you just dont like the people you work with 💀
BatWeary 11 points 10m ago
i don’t mind making baristas’ drinks. i have no issue at all if they do, but it’s nbd if not.

that being said, there’s only 2 people that i hate making drinks for. the one gets this blended yea monstrosity and if the consistency is *slightly* off he has you remake it.

the other gets an iced green tea and asks for, quite literally, half a centimeter of strawberry açaí. it’s maddening because there’s either too much or somehow not enough. never wants to make it their self, either
Traditional-Emu-1403 10 points 10m ago
No, my first store followed standard and my current doesn’t. Either way, I don’t care. It’s one more drink, it doesn’t really matter.
KaoriLikesWatari 9 points 10m ago
Lol downvote me to death but fuck standards like that. I make myself like 8 drinks a day and don’t even mark them out🥴 and if I want a cheese stick then god damn it im grabbing it and going :))) lenient stores are always nice
CoffeeWMyCat 7 points 10m ago
i recently left the siren but we had a partner who would work a short morning shift and then come through our drive thru to mark out their drink and order like 2-3 other drinks. like bestie why didn’t u just do it before u left
juneefa 6 points 10m ago
We’re not allowed to make our own drinks at my store, it doesn’t annoy me- but what does annoy the hell out of me is when they don’t know what they want while I’m pos and they clearly hear the warmers beeping and stickers generating behind me while they’re like “hhmmm what do I want..”.
Torirock10 5 points 10m ago
That’s stupid if they’re abt to leave or even go on a 30 like.. they’re the same as any other customer and most stores don’t even allow it.
dlcksuck 5 points 10m ago
Just last week our SM announced we can no longer make our own drinks. I heard it was because our DM visited and saw a partner doing it. I think it’s such bullshit. I like my drinks a certain way like a specific amount of milk in my espresso and I don’t expect my coworkers to know that or care if I tell them. Not to mention my store has a high turnover rate so a lot of partners are new and I’ve had my drinks messed up by green beans :(
heyitsmaria24 2 points 10m ago
Same thing happened with us . My manager luckily only allows us closers to do it but not everyone else (low on people on the floor). Suddenly I’m thankful of being a closer lol
CLEf11 [OP] -1 points 10m ago
Yeah but the enforcement of that rarely lasts
dlcksuck 4 points 10m ago
Thankfully I’m a closer so don’t see my sm very often. My closing shifts all don’t give a fuck and let us make it so that’s the good part!!
frappeyourmom 4 points 10m ago
I already replied to OP in another thread but am calling this out specifically.

Corporate has ways to see who’s marking out what and how, plus DMs/RMs can just wander in and watch the camera footage. Marking your own stuff out and making your own drinks is a automatic final write up or automatic separation offense because corporate considers it theft regardless if your SM/SSV says it’s chill.

Source: seen it happen, also saw one of my SMs fired after the DM/RM spent an afternoon watching footage.
strawbrryshrtcke 3 points 10m ago
it's annoying tho when ur busy making drinks and another partner bothers u on bar and occupies one of the blenders/mastrenas i'd rather make it for them and keep the routine
Torirock10 3 points 10m ago
starbucks baristas when they have to make a drink 😱!!
vanilllacakez 3 points 10m ago
Yeah if we’re busy and you want me to make your annoying receipt paper of a drink it’s really irritating.
Lady_Grey21 2 points 10m ago
We always make our own drink at both of the stores I worked at. It’s just easier for us and we’re so accustomed to it that it doesn’t get in anyones way.
SportsChick79 2 points 10m ago
There is no way I'm able to when I leave (I'm an opener who leaves at 10:15 - way too much is going on at bar at that time) but I do make my break drink (which is at like 5:45ish)
Chhhloem4 2 points 10m ago
I mean, you can’t really be mad at other partners for following standards.
Muted_Obligation4501 2 points 10m ago
Yes but I’ve come to the understanding that it depends on the shift on and if the sm is on the floor. My sm cares a little too much about it but I think it’s to cover up their lack of ability to do anything on the floor 🤷🏼‍♀️
no1misaamanefan 2 points 10m ago
our shifts absolutely do not allow us to make our own drinks. even waters! believe me i would love to make my own drink bc i’m the only one who knows exactly how i want it made
CLEf11 [OP] 2 points 10m ago
That's how I feel about mine. I sometimes customize it in ways we don't have buttons for and I feel like it's inconsiderate to make someone else ring it out and make it to my specifications when I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself
CaterpillarSpecial 2 points 10m ago
If I’m off the clock no way in hell Starbucks is getting free labor outta me
CLEf11 [OP] -4 points 10m ago
It's not free labor if the drink is literally for you
CaterpillarSpecial 0 points 10m ago
If you’re working (making Starbucks drinks) while you aren’t getting paid for it, it’s free labor for Starbucks
discountairpods 2 points 10m ago
no. i make drinks all day, why would i suddenly be bothered by it now?

you keep saying it’s “lazy” they don’t make their drinks but in reality YOU’RE lazy. like they deserve to have their drink made just like any other customer would.
CLEf11 [OP] 0 points 10m ago
It's YOUR drink it's not like you're doing free labor...you're directly benefitting from it

At my store you get written up for making your own drinks, we also aren’t allowed to double batch. It is standard to not batch and not make your own drinks or food.
CLEf11 [OP] 2 points 10m ago
Your store sounds awful
Aggravating-Mess3221 2 points 10m ago
it’s not that bad just very strict about everything
CLEf11 [OP] 1 points 10m ago
I can't imagine having 5 Frappuccinos but 3 that are the same and not being allowed to combine them
Aggravating-Mess3221 2 points 10m ago
i know. the pain of individually making three tall separate vanilla beans and then three tall separate pumpkin spice fraps😩
SNES182 2 points 10m ago
I always made my own, but depending on who the lead was, sometimes they preferred us to wait in line. I much preferred to make my own and get out of everyone’s way.
rlogranite 2 points 10m ago
Yes, especially if it's a complicated drink. I also hate when partners come in my store and order complicated drinks. I always ask them why they didn't go to their store for these bullshit drinks. (I just wanted to rant)
PoppyPancakes 2 points 10m ago
Making your own food/drinks on your breaks is a fantastic way to get separated from the company. It’s not worth it. Just make the one extra drink for them like you would anyone else
Flowerfuls 2 points 10m ago
Most of the time they get in my way so no I don’t mind. It’s not really that hard you sound very unpleasant tbh. ( unless they ask for some crazy drink lol ). our store enforces no making drinks during peak/busy times.
throwaway1209340987 1 points 10m ago
No. The actual rule is that you aren’t allowed to make your own drinks, and that no one should be behind the bar when off the clock/on a break/otherwise not working. It is not the barista’s responsibility to make their own drink. They deserve to have it made for them, just like everyone else, and it’s rude to make them feel like they are obligated to make it themselves. Your 10 starts when you’re sent — no one should have to spend any of those precious few minutes making their drink.
CLEf11 [OP] -1 points 10m ago
Most people don't start their 10 til they sit down after making it. Besides you might not get it til halfway through your 10 if you wait for it to be made and by then whats the point?
throwaway1209340987 2 points 10m ago
That’s against policy also, and it can hold other people up from getting their 10s on time because you’re taking 15 minutes in what your SSV had planned on being 10. Policy is that your 10 begins when your SSV sends you, not after your make your drink and sit down. I didn’t make then rules, I’m just telling you what they are and why.
CLEf11 [OP] -1 points 10m ago
You all need to work at more laid back stores and stop worshipping "policy" and "standard" a good store does what works best and is most efficient. Let me guess you also don't start closing tasks til 4 or 5 in the evening?
throwaway1209340987 1 points 10m ago
I’m not telling you that it’s what I do personally. I didn’t make the rules, but that’s what they are. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to blame other baristas and SSV’s for rules they have to follow/enforce because that’s literally what we get paid to do.
Christyawn 1 points 10m ago
i think you’re just a lil whiney
CLEf11 [OP] -1 points 10m ago
I think its lazy to make other people make your drinks for you when you've A. Know how to make them you work here and B. Know how you like it. I know one of the partners in particular makes other people make it just because she doesn't feel like doing it herself
subaruforesters 1 points 10m ago
We're strictly forbidden from making our own drinks at my store
mushmushmushmus 1 points 10m ago
i always make it when im going on my ten, same with any food and such, but usually not for my 30 and when i clock out. If we’re super busy though, ill usually just make it
imuyBonita 1 points 10m ago
Agreed. You know how you like it made, so make it yourself. 🙃
AnyPickle3751 1 points 10m ago
our manager told us it’s against policy out of nowhere. we used to do this but now we get in trouble if we do
Useful-Hold-2737 1 points 10m ago
If the manager is at the store, I’m working with a strict ssv or we’re busy then I don’t make my own drinks.
