Short staffing. Short staffing everywhere.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Sacred_succotash
Is it too much to ask to go more than 24 hours to be asked to cover extra hours or a whole shift? I’m FT and have been making un-heard of OT these last few weeks. Like I get it. I do. And trust my family needs the money. It just adds so much more stress waking up on the daily to texts or missed phone calls. (I probably sound like a whiny cry baby I know, I don’t care. I’m stressed and tired.)

Starbucks lean-staffs so badly it may as well be called starvation staffing at this point. One of the most insensitive and frankly cruel aspects of this corporation’s structure. One person calling out is a catastrophe.

NGL had to Google what lean staffing is. Ur so right. They do lean staff. It’s not fair.
neilgreenbreen45 points10m ago
Most corporations do it but Starbucks is particularly heinous. They assume everyone will do two peoples’ jobs at a minimum, with no call-offs and proper scheduling.
Chemical-Less41 points10m ago
my boss once casually told me she is trained to purposely keep baristas at below their requested hours per week so theyre willing to cover shifts when called to do so. Not concerning at all!
neilgreenbreen22 points10m ago
They all do this. One of the reasons why management and unions don’t go together. If they staff the store properly, they don’t get recognition/bonuses for keeping labor costs down. Which leads to burnout, tenured partners leaving, standards and cleanliness slipping… Lean staffing is both a symptom of Starbucks’s greed and lack of respect for its employees and a major cause of dysfunction for the company.

I think my SM does this too, which is weird cause it’s in NYC and we get predictability pay, which means if they ask you to cover a shift with less than 2 weeks notice, they have to pay you extra money, so you’d think they try to avoid this, but… noooope. I’m getting like an extra $50 in predictability pay this week for picking up 3 shifts (plus time and a half for labor day, and somehow they let me go like 5 hours into OT on top of that… I am very stoked for this weeks paycheck bb if you couldn’t tell… I even pre-emptively told my girl I’d pay for her to get her nails did even)

What I don’t get is they make us run a skeleton crew, and then whine about DT times and customer connection scores. You can’t have it both ways! If you want high scores, we need more staff!
a-viewer15 points10m ago
Exactly what I was thinking! One call out should not wreck the entire day
No-Chocolate-682836 points10m ago
Ur not a crybaby. I felt it yesterday to at my own store since the other Starbucks the next town over is on strike. It was brutal. You are not alone and your feelings are valid!
Sacred_succotash [OP]7 points10m ago
Ur so right. Thanks.
No-Chocolate-68284 points10m ago
#tobeapartner ! Ur so welcome ❤️
vineanddandy24 points10m ago
No, it’s not just you and you aren’t asking too much. You are not a crybaby whatsoever for wanting a peaceful home life.
People are not robots and aren’t meant to live like this. They are purposefully making it hard for people to get full time, get insurance, and make ends meet. It’s disgusting and feels purposefully cruel.
Minimiahmoose15 points10m ago
Our store does it too. And for those of us who don’t want to work tons of hours, we’ve all been working close to 30 hours. We’re all tired, beat, exhausted, and on the verge of quitting. They never hire enough people

I don't understand why we don't have designated on call partners. We used the idea when I started in retail 20+ years ago. It's still used in hospital settings too (nurses pool). Essentially ppl are scheduled to call-in by a certain time of day to see if they are needed to come in. It wouldn't have to be the same partners covering and you could have someone call in for morning and closing shifts. And if you aren't needed, enjoy your day off! Or maybe even pick up a shift at a different store bc you're ready to go in. It would be so helpful.
SunBusiness82912 points10m ago
Nobody wants that job.
gingergal-n-dog1 points10m ago
I disagree. You don't want that job.
yolk-s8 points10m ago
oh my god yeah same, im tired of this and then the guilting "no one ever wants to come in and cover" from my managers and sometimes my shifts. like yeah no shit, you overwork me while I'm there and I have 2 days a week to recover from it and actually do things with my life, and I'm a full time student, sorry im not at the sirens beck and call 24/7
yolk-s7 points10m ago
like I have an entire degree to get!!! and I'm already there almost 30 hours !!!! leave me alone!!!!!
Imaginarybluntallday7 points10m ago
Legitimately feel you. I’m in the same boat. Getting OT because there are so many call outs all around my area and nobody wants to cover, and if someone doesn’t the other partners suffer. It’s rough for everyone who does work normally… Hang in there OP. Take the money for now, but remember its just a job, and Starbucks doesn’t deserve to take advantage of you and your work ethic.
Sunny-Capriccio6 points10m ago
Not to mention they basically just fired all of their student partners for not having enough hours. The difference won’t be felt during the semester bc they work little-none anyway, but how many students are really going to feel like coming back for winter and summer after that 🤷♀️
f41rysp1t6 points10m ago
Lmfao I’ve literally been one of the only people working 30+ hours 6 days a week at multiple stores while getting scheduled 15hours max because I get asked to cover most of the call outs. I’ve been so drained but I need the money so I can’t say no ):
nmartin1906 points10m ago
Your concerns are valid. I’m sorry they are taking advantage of your flexibility and willingness to work. It’s hard for everyone when there isn’t enough staff. I hate having to call out (even in cases of emergency) because I know everyone is going to be behind and stressed it. It’s a burden on the whole team.
floofxs23 points10m ago
No i worked 11 days in a row and I felt like I was going to fall over I was so exhausted. OT ok is nice but having to work so much just to break $1000 in 2 weeks. Not the highlight of my life. Take care of yourself.
ShannyES3 points10m ago
Start saying no. With no reason why.
My store doesn’t contact me anymore unless it’s a legit emergency. Because they know I’m not wanting the hours.
Not saying you need to say no every time. But stop saying yes every time.
itsnnotdamiann2 points10m ago
my store has more of an issue with hiring people that have morning availability. we've got too many minors to the point where there's only about 3-4 people with morning availability not including SSV's and the SM, we also lost our ASM a couple months ago because he got promoted to SM and is at a different store now so thats now one less person we have with morning availability. We also only have just enough SSV's for the week and they all have to work full time hours, and while I'm next in line to become a SSV I still only have part time availability because of classes.
No-City-16822 points10m ago
I get it but I’ve been thinking of this as advantageous to me… I need to work 30+ hours to barely pay my bills, and my SM has been scheduling me for barely 20, but Im in NYC and there’s a million stores and I finally figured out that if I get my SM to add me to the system for a store I wanna work at, I can pick up any shifts people put up in the app, and I kinda like it cause it gives me more control over the shifts I work… I can choose to pick up the long, closing shifts, on the days I wanna work, to get my hours. Plus, in NYC we get “predictability pay”, which is money they have to pay you if they make any changes to your schedule… if they ask you to cover a shift with less than 7 days notice, it’s an extra $15, and if you somehow lose hours, it’s even more. Also, I find working at different stores awesome… you learn a lot, and it breaks up the monotony.
canadiadryy2 points10m ago
Not whiny at all— I get a text from my SM legit every other day asking if I can come in for coverage. She’s always apologetic, but just hire some more people, girl!!
xiew2 points10m ago
I feel years ago I worked 19 days in a row cause 2 stores in my district fired 3 people each. Ended up with 58 hours in a week during that.
Ambitious_Ad32201 points10m ago
I applied a month ago and just got a rejection email yesterday. Trust me, people are applying for the experience / extra hands; they’re just not hiring anyone anywhere…. At least in my area.
stoneylizzard1 points10m ago
my store has barely ever been staffed fully for the 1 year+ i’ve been working here. my store manager just brought in THIRTEEN new transfers and because we don’t have a drive through, we only get like 200 labor hours a week. im one of our longest tenured partners at the store and i got scheduled one shift for the whole week.
shanswen1 points10m ago
My manager just cut my hours because i switched to mornings. I’d say i’m one of the few people that never call out. Why not cut the peoples hours that c/o 3 times a week… Don’t expect me to cover because of your terrible scheduling lol.
Sacred_succotash [OP]2 points10m ago
Or the people who are always late!!!!!
crystyleea1 points10m ago
my manager keeps scheduling me only like 5-10 hours when i want closer to 20 and then texts me everyday asking if i can come in like why don't you just schedule me more then?
Perfect-Leadership581 points10m ago
nono, 100% valid, i started taking shifts to get 20 hours a week, next thing i know i’m the go to person to ask for coverage, i’d rather work full shifts only a few days a week rather than 4 hours EVERYDAY
dnims241 points10m ago
The past three days I worked in a row we had 2 or 3 people call off each day and it’s been an absolute nightmare
