Manipulated out of putting in two weeks(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by a-viewer
I told my manager I was leaving for a new job and they wanted me to start the 19th but I was already scheduled at sbux through the 25th. The first thing out of my manager's mouth: "Well I can't get those shifts covered for you."
I told her this on the 7th and since I don't work Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the 19th would be my last day if I put in two weeks from that day. I've never had to quit a job like this before so I don't know the etiquette so I just agreed to the 25th being my last day. But I am finding it impossible to get my remaining shifts covered. I feel like my manager took advantage of me and shut down any conversation about me needing to leave when I need to leave and now I'm stuck in a corner where I can't get these shifts covered but I have to because I'm supposed to be working at a new job by that time. I don't know what to do but I'm tempted to just quit-effective immediately after my shift on the 19th. Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated.

Leave on the 19th. They cannot prevent you from putting in a two weeks notice. Don’t let your manager manipulate or guilt trip you.

Do I resubmit a resignation letter saying my last day is the 19th then? Even though it's now only a one week notice?

You really, really do not owe the company or your manager an explanation. You can definitely write a letter stating you will be leaving on the 19th as originally stated to your manager. But because she bullied you about it, you may not be able to come back to work at bux in the future.

if you're in a non-union US store, you are under at-will employment. This is when it works in your favor. You can leave whenever you want, for any reason, or no reason at all.
Already scheduling you doesn't matter. And getting those shifts covered is not your problem.
"Hey boss. My last day is the 19th. Smell you later."
"But, wait! I have you scheduled until the 25th."
"Ok, bai"

They might get spiteful and mark you down as ineligible for rehire, but if you really need to go back to going home smelling like coffee grounds and stale milk, there's always Dunkin, Dutch Bros, Peets, CBTL, Caribou, etc.

What are they gonna do? Fire you?

Lol I think this to myself every day as I show up and half ass my way through my shift
Wspitsamanda23 points10m ago
leave on the 19th. hell, leave on the 18th. they can’t force you to come in for your shifts and if you let them know ahead of time, that’s on them to cover for you. when you don’t show up, they’ll have to find coverage either way so it honestly doesn’t matter

It’s called “notice” because you are notifying them, not because you are asking their permission. It is a courtesy and not a requirement.

use your sick time on those last 6 days
a-viewer [OP]7 points10m ago
Why did I not think of this lol

Smartest one I’ve seen

Yeah, just leave when you leave, my dude. Burn the Sbux bridge, there are other places to work if this new job doesn't work out or is only temporary or whatever.

SM here, I have received notices when there were scheduled shifts after the date on the notice. Guess who’s responsibility those shifts are? Mine. Also trying to FORCE someone to work through a notice I know they’re probably not going to finish. I’d rather get them covered then leave my store stranded
a-viewer [OP]1 points10m ago
Omg I'm so glad you said this because I asked a friend who recently became an ASM and he was a huge jerk to me about it saying it's not her job, it's mine.
verdeuce1 points10m ago
That’s just people being petty and bitter about you leaving. Unfortunately they don’t really train us on HR practices and that’s not really a valid excuse but it’s the only thing I’ve got to say about other peoples behavior. As a last resort you can get the DM involved and they will back you up
CBukowski8083 points10m ago
Uh just don’t come after the 19th? It’s a notice, not a request. You don’t owe fealty to the lords of Starbucks. This is America baby. You can tell them to suck these coffee beans before you leave and they can’t do anything except prevent you from working there again lol.
Lightheaded_gamer2 points10m ago
I only stayed my two weeks because I got along with old SM , ssvs and partners. If you feel that you don’t at least owe your work besties that (a personal decision btw), then you leave on the 19th , heck just don’t show up after that manipulation card. Legit drop em if they don’t give you the decency to make things right.
At the end of the day you may not go back but if there’s ever a feeling you may want to have that option, email the resignation letter to your sm and cc your dm even state that you tried looking for coverage ; whatever makes you look better. And if that moment comes , reach out to the dm and see.
Regardless how you leave it’s not the end of the world to you.

It's always best to give notice if possible. Even if you think you'll never come back, you never know what might happen, and it's best to leave on a good note in case you need a reference in the future. I would think it's still worth submitting your resignation even if it's only a week at this point. Your manager might suck, but the heads up will make things easier on your coworkers as well.
For future reference, always submit your resignation in writing and keep a copy/picture so your manager can't try to guilt you into staying.
gakedbay2 points10m ago
If you don’t need the reference, leave the 19th. If you do then find a new one as soon as you’re at your new job. I’m that you’re in this situation. It sucks when managers try to blame their employees for their own lack of coverage or personnel, she should have at least fake congratulated you.

a 2 week notice is purely for posterity. you can leave whenever you want, they cant hold you there
Avoni_C1 points10m ago
Two weeks notice is a courtesy. Finding people to cover you is THEIR responsibility. You could leave today if you wanted to and they could not stop you. They could not hold your tips they could not hold your wages so leave whenever you want. Tell her in person tell her in writing your last day is the 19th and leave.
Torirock101 points10m ago
bro just fucking leave? what r they gonna do? fire u? u need that anyway
PoppyPancakes1 points10m ago
Leave on the 19th. What’re they gonna do? Fire you?
geegeemiller1 points10m ago
It’s literally not your problem. Don’t he bullied. Leave on the 19th. You Don’t Work there anymore!!
Necessary_Low9391 points10m ago
If u don’t plan on coming back who cares but if u do then u might wanna rethink this as the sm can write whatever they want when u leave—especially a vindictive one like this.
aint_that_right1 points10m ago
If you have to leave then leave for sure. I might even ask your new boss if they could help you out (explain how you really value leaving on good terms, but that if they need you you will start when they need). If you didn’t get it in writing then your manager can mark you as no notice given which reflects badly on rehire!
