Customers who have favorite baristas but are mean to everyone else🥲 (self.starbucksbaristas)

This lady came in and I had never seen her before but my coworker was talking to her so I assumed she would be nice. I never met this regular before because I was working a shift I don’t normally work so I just treated her like everyone else, friendly.. She was ordering a drink and a coffee with the cream and sugar on the side. I told her I just started brewing a fresh batch of pike and she went “um.. okay😐” which had a little rudeness but I was like whatever, doesn’t matter. Then I get her coffee and her cream on the side in a short cup and she was like “I’ve never gotten it in a cup like this” with a whole bunch of attitude and I was like sorry not sure where the sample cups are! Then she goes “now I need a lid and a stopped and all this stuff” rude asf and I put the lid and stopper on for her and apologize for the cup being different than what she normally asks for cuz idk wtf she wanted instead.. Then she asks for more cream ans I quickly poured it into the short cup and filled it up like 70% of the way then left to grab warming bc I was doing register, warming, and cs. Then she says “well I didn’t want that much” and complained about how now she was gonna have to throw some away and I apologized while I was standing at the oven… Then she says “you seem like you’re in a rush” which I thought was her sympathizing with me being busy so I said “haha yeah but it’s okay” AND THEN SHE GOES “but it’s not okay I want you to focus on me” and then walks away😭 which before she asked for more cream our transaction was ALREADY OVER !!! Like what do you want from me😭 She was irritated that I was multitasking rather than standing at the register doing nothing when there was no one else there and our transaction was over?? And also we are ALWAYS in a rush!! If you’re a regular at starbucks I’m sorry but you should know that we are expected to multitask constantly and also SEE that we are.. And what hurt my feelings was that she was talking to my coworker all friendly after but was rude to me🥲 like… did I do something wrong? I don’t always pick up on social cues the best but I thought I was being kind and helpful🥲🥲 I just wish people were nice to everyone.. She was also rude to my other coworker so I just don’t understand but I just feel uncomfortable serving her again. Idk man rude customers don’t usually get to me at all bc they’re usually just rude ro everyone but I feel like I’m being judged for something

Seems like she was agitated that she was slightly inconvenienced…in her mind.

People like her get a rush of feeling like theyre controlling something. Like when people drive super slow in the passing lane when they kno they should get over in the right lane. Same with this lady, she gets off on knowing how busy it is and wished that she could control the situation to u focusing on her only and causing backup. That would have made her feel powerful. 🙄

This is the type of behavior starbucks breeds. Up customers' asses so much: get to kno them, greet every single person walking in n out no matter what ur doing, give them literally whatever they want whenever they want, they can abuse u and u still have to be nice to them, etc lol to the point where it breeds that entitlement in some customers where they think theyre the world when they come to a starbucks. No.

Yeahhh my store has some regulars that my coworkers seem to like. I’ll see them being nice to my coworkers but they’re always total jerks to me. Other people have told me I’m their favorite barista so that has helped me not worry about the jerks.

i’m kinda awkward so I haven’t really made any good connections with customers so it just makes me feel like they think i’m rude or something )):

Hey sometimes it’s hard especially when you go from talking to all these random people at a time. I found though just trying to make eye contact makes a customer feel way more important. Looking away or not looking at them at all makes them associate it with a negative experience cause they don’t feel heard!

Oof I would have been so irritated too. When she said ‘I’ve never gotten it in a cup like this’ I would have been like ‘well first time for everything!’ And when she said ‘we’ll I didn’t want that much’ I would have been like ‘well good thing it’s in a separate cup then’ and omg for her to tell you it’s not okay and she wants you to focus on her I would have been livvidddd. I’m a very patient person but when one person takes advantage and continues to be rude is when I start to show my irritability towards them. Sometimes people just like to take advantage.

Same!! I was so shocked when she said that😭 and I am also super patient as well and I wish people understood we have to be patient all day!! It can be so much mental exhaustion

I had maybe 5+ customers like that around the time I started working at Starbucks; nice asf to my coworkers, completely rude and cold to me. I think they just expect the special treatment from everyone considering they are regulars but forget to show the slightest bit of decency to new baristas or, in your case, a barista who is working a shift that you normally wouldn’t work. Just know that it’s a reflection of them and it honestly makes them look disgusting as people :) Sounded like you handled it very well in the moment!
