I can’t get my shifts covered!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Affectionate_Book_82
Okay so basically for the next two weeks, I have shifts on Tuesday during the afternoon. The problem is I have school during my shift. I have literally asked everyone in my store if they could take it, and everyone says they can’t because they are in school. I have also posted on my city’s barista page on Facebook seeing if any borrowed partners can take it. None. And my store is currently understaffed. Idk what to do! I can’t miss my class as it is mandatory, but I can’t get my shifts covered! What are you supposed to do in these situations where you can’t find a cover?

- offer the shift on Marketplace (the app) - start calling other stores. Ask them for phone numbers for baristas who are not working.
Worst case scenario, you call out. It won't be an "approved" call out, so you may get a corrective action. But if you don't have any others, it'll be fine.

If your availability is updated in the app then you should not receive any corrective action as you cannot work that time and it is written that you can not

If it’s outside your official availability and you were scheduled it you are not responsible for getting it covered. Otherwise I’d change your availability asap call other stores and worst case you’d have to call out for it.

Not true.
Starbucks reservew the right to schedule any partner at any time, regardless of availability. The only exception is minors, who have more restrictions.

Maybe it’s just a California thing because it’s been made clear to me that if it’s outside your availability it’s not your responsibility

Same in MA too. Outside of availability is whoever made the schedule’s problem, not the barista’s

Okay glad it’s not just cali it doesn’t make sense to schedule people outside availability they are just gonna miss the shift anyway.

Well then they can’t be surprised when people can’t come in for that. That’s completely unprofessional

Oh, I'm not defending it, just explaining the policy.

this is true^ in the partner guide it states it. Now does it mainly only happen when there’s store meetings and other mandatory events that occur outside an availability? Yes. Do most managers speak with individuals about the event if they are going to schedule someone outside of their availability? Yes
My question is tho I’m not seeing where OP said it is out of their availability so, is it? Or did they not discuss with their manager about their working hours when school begins

Then what’s the point of updating your availability in the system? I’d love to know facts on how this is “not true”

I mean, every store manager I've ever worked with had always honored partners' availabilities. They're smart enough to know that scheduling partners against their availabilities makes for unhappy people who quit.
Starbucks, like most other companies, still reserves the right to schedule partners based on business needs. Most commonly, you'll see managers use this policy to explain why partners got scheduled on a holiday if it's against their availability (eg, Tommy cant work Thursdays because he has class. He can still be scheduled on Thanksgiving, because the store he works at needs him).
Again, I'm not saying that it's fair. I just don't want the OP to use this incorrect advice as basis for not coming to their shift. They can be held accountable for it, regardless of availability.

So to help out OP, do they have to find their own coverage? Or the SM. If it’s in advance, shift is outside of availability and they give enough notice, then shouldn’t it be the store’s responsibility to find coverage? Im simply trying to understand the legalities of it. This is the first time i heard this and actually makes sense why some partners do have this happen to them.

Literally not your problem. If you've told whoever does your shifts then it's not your problem.
Considering you're still in education anyone who thinks this job is your end goal is kidding themselves. You've informed the right people, and made reasonable effort to cover it. Sorry its now just.. not your problem. Hopw you enjoy your classes :)

If you were scheduled outside your availability, you're not required to cover the shift

Lol don’t go in, as a shift I tell my partners if they can’t work it that they talk to the manager and have it on paper. If they still put you don’t show up. If they ask about it tel them again and show the paper. Don’t let them write you up for it

Try to get it covered through all avenues then talk to your DM. If no solution is offered let them know that you’ll be calling in then.
