nothing infuriated me more. do people not have bank accounts?? why are people using so much cash?? and when they reload with a credit card?? you can do that from the app?????? you don’t need me to do it???
meegy123223 points10m ago
I don’t mind it except for the fact they ALWAYS ask to do it after I entered their order like just ask first
demigirlhailee73 points10m ago
I always prefer it when they reload at the end cause then I can empty out what's left on their card and use the "do you want to reload now?" function to do it all in one transaction
Freezykiwi44 points10m ago
I never do it in the same transaction anymote because I've had several people not understand the math on their receipt after I do. I can explain until I'm blue in the face and some people still won't understand the breakdown lol.
meegy1235 points10m ago
No I mean like when they want to reload for the balance, so they have to do it before not after
Magicenbykat3 points10m ago
Woah how do you do that 👀 (green bean)
oddbitch2 points9m ago
Scan it, then hit the button to charge the Starbucks app. It’ll say there’s not enough and then ask if you want to reload now. Hit yes!
Magicenbykat2 points9m ago
Ooh right that makes sense, thanks so much 😄
kimememememe1 points9m ago
Wait that’s an option at corporate?? I work at a licensed store and I wish we had that
mangotangoafterdark [OP]14 points10m ago
i just hate it cause the cash drawer not opening until it’s complete gives me anxiety

feelingvomity1 points9m ago
i used to just hit save order and then load their card then go back to the order and pay using that bc they always wanted to pay for it fully off the app 😭
boopsbittie83 points10m ago
Not everyone wants their cards directly linked to the app
pinkshadedgirafe42 points10m ago
THIS. I know more than enough people who don't save their card info on their phones or computers.
CheesiestSlice40 points10m ago
Don't they get more stars for using a starbucks card? That's why I figured people did it.
mangotangoafterdark [OP]32 points10m ago
yes but you can load it yourself you don’t need to slow the line to have me do it for hou
CheesiestSlice31 points10m ago
In customer minds we complete the exact same function to them as the app. They see it as convenient for themselves, a one-stop thing.
PoppyPancakes34 points10m ago
Not everyone wants their credit card info on an app. Companies get their data leaked all the time and some people are really sus about it. And not everyone has a credit card they use. Poor people exist and they still get Starbucks. People with bad credit still get Starbucks. People who are trying to get their finances in check while still making room for the fun things in life get Starbucks. It’s not difficult to reload a card regardless of tender.
Candid_Experience5204 points10m ago
THIS!!!
ElijahLordoftheWoods33 points10m ago
I wish a minor inconvenience were the most infuriating thing about this job.
foxygrandma1016 points9m ago
One my co workers told me that at her old place a customer slashed everyone’s car tires just cause they didn’t have the pastry he wanted
kaitrsmith33 points10m ago
as a tattooer cash is king
mangotangoafterdark [OP]-34 points10m ago
i make cash tips too but why don’t you like deposit it to your bank
Callesandra14 points10m ago
I moved states a few months ago and now my closest bank branch is almost three hours away. I've picked up my tips and used those to load my SB card before leaving once or twice just so I don't have so much cash on me and then the card reload isn't coming out of my bank account.
I agree that they should reload before ordering (if inside) or before having you try to scan their card for payment in DT
mangotangoafterdark [OP]4 points10m ago
fair thanks for the insight
noeyoureatowel8 points10m ago
My bank doesn’t have physical branches and shoving wads of 1s into the ATM at Target is awkward (and also to do so I have to plan a specific trip to go to the ATM with my money and like I would rather just use my cash for the weed store)
skyellemusic3 points10m ago
lmao when I get my cash tips in all ones and deposit at the register at CVS...I get funny looks and i'm like "......im not a stripper okay?" lol
also when my shift gives me 100 pennies 😭
[deleted]5 points10m ago

mangotangoafterdark [OP]6 points10m ago
forgot about that. fair.
niftyynifflerr4 points10m ago
Oh honey, there is no world in which the starbucks tips you earn in a MONTH are on the same magnitude of the cash a tattooer makes in a day. Source: barista with a lot of tattoos.
mangotangoafterdark [OP]-2 points9m ago
this isn’t my only job
Impressive_Yellow_8618 points10m ago
Not everyone has bank accounts. At my store, we have a handful off people who don't have accounts and just relieve everything in cash.
malletgirl919 points10m ago
It’s an inconvenience sure, but speaking as a former partner? Just do your job and help people reload their cards… there are a thousand and one reasons that people reload at the store - Cash tips, don’t want to give credit card info, they didnt realize they needed to reload and panic internally and get awkward and forget they can do it themselves (me), they only want to do $5 but the minimum on the app is $10 - just to name a few off the top of my head.
mangotangoafterdark [OP]-3 points10m ago
you think i’m not doing my job and just saying no to them? 😭
niftyynifflerr11 points10m ago
I think they meant that you are causing yourself undue stress over a minor inconvenience, and it shows a lack of compassion/service attitude. You're probably great at your job. But gaining another perspective might help the job feel easier or just better to you? I know it's just a vent and you're allowed that pet peeve. People in this thread just seem to be picking up on the place of privilege you speak from.
malletgirl913 points9m ago
No, I did not mean to imply you weren’t!! I was trying to convey that it’s ultimately a minor thing that pales in comparison to the loads of other BS you have to put up with on a regular basis.
But I also know that makes the little things grating.
What I meant by “Just do your job and help people reload their cards” is that there is a lot of customer inflicted BS that is unwarranted. They have zero reason for making life difficult “I want an upside down caramel macchiato no drizzle.” *calls out vanilla latte for jan* “I wAnTeD a CaRaMeL mAcChiAtO”
I apologize for the tone my poor choice of words implied, that’s on me. You’re doing great, I believe in you!!
Vegan_Sweetie6 points10m ago
It’s not the reloading I mind, it’s the PEOPLE who want it reloaded that get to me.
They don’t have their wallet out. They don’t have their payment ready. Payment? What is that? Money? What is that? My app? What is that?
Meanwhile the DT time be like:
398:700 seconds….
And there be a line around the building.
NickiTheNotSoThicki2 points9m ago
Valid like I’ll always reload your card but if you think you need to reload use your time waiting to dig around your car, under your seat, get in your glove box and find your wallet instead of doing it at the window
Vegan_Sweetie1 points9m ago
Exactly
mulberrybby4 points10m ago
I prefer doing it myself rather than staring at them while their card reloads in the DT.
Softrbreeze1 points10m ago
I didn’t even realize the baristas could do this! As busy as my local SB is, I hate to think people are using them for this.
MessatineSnows4 points10m ago
the thing that kills me is when they try and get me to reload it THROUGH the app. our Kroger kiosk only reloads via physical cards, and you already have the app… i have to either show them how to do i themselves or direct them to the corporate down the road
rachelsmall3 points9m ago
Honestly, it’s a very small part of your job. People don’t always have data to reload at store and honestly it can be a pain logging into guest wifi. Some people don’t like having to link their personal accounts, and find it easier to just have you do your job. There’s a thousand reasons why they might prefer this method, and it’s really not a big deal.
welcome2mybog2 points9m ago
we have a lady who always wants to load the exact amount of her drink and never tells you before she goes to pay so it’s a whole fucking process of refunding and checking how much the order was and reloading. it’s not like she doesn’t have anything in her app either, there’s always at least $25 in there but she still insists on doing the exact amount. like ma’am just pay with a card!!! or at least maybe don’t be incredibly rude and impatient every time 🫠
ETA: here’s another thing, i don’t know how the app works!! i don’t know what deals are on it, i don’t know how to load money (although i’m sure if i used it i could figure it out very easily), i don’t know which store you sent your drink to except that it isn’t mine, i don’t know how stars work, why it isn’t loading, etc. because we are not trained to!! but they still expect us to be IT support while we’re trying to make 8 different frappucinos and take your order and grab cream and sugar for the guy standing at the bar and throw in your cheese danish. guuuurl i do not know and i cannot help!
Garrickrelentless2 points10m ago
I prefer to do it, that way we can get it all done in one step and there isn't any watching them fumbling with their phone.
mangotangoafterdark [OP]-1 points9m ago
i prefer when they reload while they wait in the long line instead of when they get to the window myself but to each their own
funktionones1 points9m ago
the app isn’t always updated with the current balance though. i can’t count how many times every day i’ll see someone zero out their card only to say “it says i have $20 on here though?”
Necessary_Low9392 points10m ago
Yesterday a few came in with 100s and 50s. Normally this doesn’t happen as they use cards. Most of these are tourists (nyc) so I understand why they use those bills. I still say no to them and they use card or asked a friend.
Edit: card—credit card.
malletgirl910 points10m ago
I mean, how much are they putting on their card though? If they want to put $50 or $100 or even like, $80 on their card you can take bigger bills. you just gotta check ‘em with the pen thing to see if they’re counterfeit.
Necessary_Low9391 points9m ago
They’re not putting anything on their card. They’re tourists—they don’t have a card. I never said they were reloading. I was talking about a credit card—normally the customers at my store use credit cards and not cash. However yesterday I just had many, most who are tourists, that came in with big bills. And yes I know that we can take a big bill if they were reloading their card for a big amount. I don’t have a problem checking 50/100s without a pen.
I know the title is reloading cards but I am not OP.
malletgirl910 points9m ago
Geez sorry, the whole original topic is about reloading cards, you may not be OP but like, cut some slack? Sorry I assumed you were continuing the discussion on the inconvenience of reloading cards.
Necessary_Low9390 points9m ago
Op also mentioned about banks. We are not banks.
Comfortable-Dig27101 points9m ago
i agree! as a customer, i reload before i get in the drive thru or before i order. it’s so embarrassing to sit there and reload and do the awkward waiting dance for it to load. but at that point as a barista i’d rather just reload it from the register to avoid the awkward “sorry it’s loading” face
Sahalio0 points9m ago
Bruh why are you complaining for a really easy job?!??
rusted170 points9m ago
I’m grateful most of the older people I serve KNOW to ask to reload first, then order. Or don’t care abt reloading after/during transaction
It’s honestly people 30 and younger who can’t get it through their fricken skulls
PlantVader0 points10m ago
It’s always the regulars that have the cash but don’t tip.
