We recently got a new/interim(?) SM because our original SM had to leave unexpectedly with a personal issue, and hasn’t been back for a few weeks.

If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t like our old SM. She wasn’t a terrible person or anything, she just wasn’t terribly involved and didn’t seem to care much for our staff or our store unless her higher ups were hovering. It took her weeks just to learn my name and my face. She was just sort of inattentive. Our new manager is great, if a little intense but she’s been nothing but kind and accommodating, and definitely has boosted and encouraged a noticeable amount of growth in our store in the few weeks she’s been here. She’s delightful.

However

She has scheduled me for now 8 (I REPEAT, 8!!!) 5.75 hours in a ROW. I work between 28-35 hours (usually scheduled 21-26 ish, I pick up shifts ya girl is dirt poor), and with schoolwork, rent, moving out of my parents place in a few months, etc. working as much as I am is already a lot but it’s necessary and I enjoy my job. But I need more than 10 minutes for what usually ends up being 6 hours of work when we’re so understaffed I don’t get a chance to look at the clock until 15-20 minutes after my shift has ended.

I texted her about it about a week ago, asking if for maybe one or two of those shifts I could have that extra 15 minutes so I can have a break and her response is was that we “just don’t have the hours. We need that flexibility in case we need to call in help or have someone stay late” which…… okay. As if I’m not already staying late……?

She constantly thanks me for being such a “rockstar” and a “team player” but frankly I’m exhausted. I don’t want to come to her frustrated, because she isn’t being deliberately inconsiderate, but I’m a person too, and I know her life is more than drive thru window times. So is mine. My joints hurt. It’s exhausting and I just want to sit down for 30 minutes a couple times a week and enjoy a sandwich with my headphones on in my car instead of listening to the ovens beep one more time.

Yeah, having one ten minute break for what's usually a six hour shift is getting painful. I've been super exhausted by it for a couple of weeks now. I've been asking (damn near demanding) a second ten at least a couple of times a week. I'm not twenty years old anymore and my body can't keep up on that sort of demand.

Exactly. People like to think a job like this doesn’t take a toll on your body, I’m barely 18 and I have so many back, knee, and neck issues from restaurant and my barista job.
