I used to be doing my own nails and I was able to grow them out a decent length but now my nails are either medium length and chipped to hell or broken to the tip of my finger and im allergic to the sani so my hands are so so fucked but..... I'm almost out of here I'm SO close

Ok I'm also allergic to the sani!!! I've been training the last few weeks/haven't been on bar as much. But I went back to closes and my poor fingers are falling apart.
I'd do anything for nice hands and strong nails

genuine advice from someone who's been here over a year now: disposable nitrile gloves are your best friend. not the long reusable ones we get for dishes and other cleaning tasks (though those are obviously good to use as needed), but disposable ones that come in boxes. either buy them for yourself and mark them as for you, or have your manager order some for the store. the cheap vinyl ones they send us are NOT enough to keep the sani off our hands and our skin protected, plus nitrile gloves won't stick to the stickers ur putting on drinks or food.

also, wear lotion under the gloves because your skin will be screaming for moisture if you don't. if there arent any bottles of lotion available for everyone to use at your location, *there should*. according to the training starbucks has to supply us with a freely available bottle of lotion, so bug the shit out of your manager until they get some. something like eucerine or lubriderm are good, but really anything "medicated" will probably do.

best of luck to you! sorry for the novel but this shit is so important to me on a personal level and I really wish someone had told me this kinda stuff when I was starting out. I didn't even know someone COULD be allergic to the sani until my hands were basically ruined by it.

wait, just curious, what are the symptoms of being allergic to the sani? 👀

just a warning cuz this description might get a bit gross lol

for me, my hands have gone through several different stages, so I dont know how universal my experience is but personally it does feel a bit more on the extreme end?

when it was just starting up I think it was just a few dry patches here and there with a lot of pretty bad sores showing up mostly on my fingers. the sores were pretty painful, but small and very like acne. my hands would get bad, heal a bit, get even worse, heal a little more, etc..

I'd also get these abrasions on my skin that were like very very short cuts, but seemed weirdly deep for the length, and I for sure wasn't getting them by actually slicing my skin. they'd just appear out of nowhere. they didn't bleed though.

I remember one time my hands were so dry and sore (before my store had any lotion to use) that I told my shift lead I couldn't use the sanitizer at all when she asked me to clean counters, but she just told me to glove up and get wiping. sure enough, not too long after the friction from the glove made my hands bleed and I made sure she saw me grabbing bandages lol.

but anyway recently I haven't been getting a lot of cut-like abrasions or many of those sores, but I HAVE been getting enormous dry patches, basically fully engulfing the backs of my hands in one big, very red, dry, itchy patch. very gross warning, but a couple days ago the dry skin on my hand were falling off in pretty sizeable flakes, and it would not stop until all the dead skin was basically completely shed off.

not to mention how much it hurt to bend my fingers if I wasn't constantly CONSTANTLY lotioning up. so so painful fr. genuinely horrible to experience, and all that is part of the reason im finally quitting. this entire time ive basically just been told "glove up and deal with it" and I'm sick of it

Apprehensive-You5261 2 points 9m ago
Sameeee they just say we can’t paint them so I keep mine well manicured? They’re not super long like that but not short either I just keep them well shaped and remove the cuticle and stuff

I miss painting my nails so much. I did see a nail stain product so I wonder if that's allowed? It just stains ur nails so nothing can chip off
