Cortado or Latte? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Low-End4987
I know we don't have an order button on the menu for a cortado. However, I'm trying to understand the term cortado. Is it basically when a customer asks for no foam in their latte? So the base of the drink is espresso and steamed milk? Whereas a latte is espresso shots, steamed milk, and the milk froth?

Just charge for an espresso macchiato.

A cortado has equal parts of espresso and milk and no foam. The espresso is “cut” (cortado in español) with milk.

An Italian espresso macchiato has the espresso and is lightly “marked” (macchiato) with foam.

Both drinks are usually served in 6-8 oz cups.

Thanks! Also - an espresso macchiato is just scooping the foam in the cup and espresso shots on top in a short cup right?

Shots, then a dollop of foam on top (marking the espresso with foam) Latte macchiato is steamed milk first then pull the shots into it :)

afaik a cortado is a six ounce drink; 2oz espresso, 2oz steamed milk, and 2oz foam on top! its hard to measure it all out bc our shorts are 8 ounces so i have to fight the urge to fill the cup, but i used to work at a cafe that had specific cortado cups and thats usually the ratio we used

edit for more info: If someone asked for this you could probably ring it up as an espresso macchiato with extra milk and extra foam

That is so cool! I really appreciate the help I didn’t understand the difference. Have a great day!

cortado is 1:1 espresso and steamed milk!

it’s one of my fave drinks. let’s say a latte has 2oz of espresso, then you steam and add 6/8oz of milk.

cortado would be 2oz espresso, then steam and add 2oz of milk.

cortado is a much smaller drink and has a stronger flavour as there’s not a lot of milk, as opposed to a latte. a cortado is ideally made to be drinking temperate, so you steam it for a lot less time than you would for a latte, you’re supposed to be able to just drink it as soon as you get it as opposed to getting a hot latte and drinking it as it cools down!

it’s not supposed to fill up the cup, so sometimes people will get a little upset, but traditionally a cortado is around 4oz of product in total.

no prob! i’m sure there’s a lot of leeway with this drink, as it’s been served and reinvented by a bunch of places.

i work at starbucks rn and still make the drink for myself the way i was taught by a coffee roaster back when i used to manage another location. there’s a wonderful book by James Hoffman called The World Atlas of Coffee that has really simple descriptions of all kinds of drinks!! I never read those kinds of books but it’s a nice book that’s super worth getting if you’re interested in coffee!

I definitely am interested in coffee. I was never taught about a cortado but I’ll see it at other coffee shops and I was curious about it. That’s for that recommendation I’ll definitely check it out.
