ID’d for using discount? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dxdewhxt
I’ve been a partner for about a year now and my legal name is not the name I use at work (it’s a deadname). Today I was in a big city and used my discount, then was asked for my ID. I said sure but warned them that the first name was not going to be the same. They let the transaction go through but now I’m wondering what would happen if they said something like “Your ID and name in our system don’t match?” And I also heard from a coworker a little bit ago that there was a legal issue with asking for IDs (the whole deadname issue) and that we shouldn’t do it anymore? Just wondering what the policy about all that is. I work at a Starbucks that isn’t that popular so we just ask for name confirmation.
5AV1OR 96 points 9m ago
I’d get a partner card! It’s technically the correct thing to ask for instead of ID and you can put your name on it
clouds183 8 points 9m ago
we don’t have the option to order one anymore lol
bellamythos 21 points 9m ago
you can set up the digital partner card in the app - log in to your starbucks account on a computer (or the desktop site on a mobile device) > personal info > partner numbers, AND add your partner card (16 digit code & security code is in mypartnerinfo) as a “gift card” in the app.

(if you have the partner card, physical or digital, we aren’t supposed to ask for ID)
Sirmarchboy22 5 points 9m ago
It still let's you order it on the my partner info page! It's a cardboard crappy gift card but it's there still
clouds183 1 points 9m ago
I’ve been checking to see every week if I can order it from there, but no button option to lol
Virth 1 points 9m ago
IIRC, you have to be on the store computer to have that option.
Sirmarchboy22 1 points 9m ago
Weird. Must be based on localization, cause I had my green bean I was training order one last month
5AV1OR 2 points 9m ago
My manager can still get paper ones she gives them to every new hire, I never used mine and have since lost it because I’ve never had anyone ask me for any identity stuff
starbucksbarist28 0 points 9m ago
I think you can on my partner info?? That’s how I got mine. But it’s been a few months so they could have stopped since then.
erikaasairaaa 93 points 9m ago
Someone came to my store and tried to use someone else’s. The reason we know is because my manager asked if they were still with the company and they said yes. My manager asked which store and they wouldn’t answer. Instead said they left the company weeks ago but it still worked. She asked him where his former store was and just responded around. I asked her what our best solution was and she said just ask for ID (the names didn’t match but for different reason than OP of course) but I would hate to run into this (OP situation) and make someone uncomfortable. Should we just ask for the app? I know we can add our numbers on there to get our discount for mobile orders etc
mrcupcake18 8 points 9m ago
For mobile orders?? Is that automatic or do I have to do something because I have my numbers on the app but I’ve never tried mobile ordering 🤔
erikaasairaaa 12 points 9m ago
It’s automatic. Just go on the Starbucks website and login. Under personal info it should give you the option to add your partner numbers. Once you add the numbers it’ll automatically apply your discount at check out
mrcupcake18 3 points 9m ago
Oh I’ve had my numbers on the app I just wasn’t sure if it was automatic. Now that I know my life will be easier thank you haha
Cust_service_voice 1 points 9m ago
Mind you if you go to a register in store it isn’t automatic. Every time I go to a new city and I mention it they want to do the whole them typing in the numbers and ask for my ID 🙄 just pull the screen up and scan. Hardly ever get the discount . I’m thinking of just Mobile ordering ONLY next time I go out of town 🤷🏽‍♀️
AppointmentLatter302 1 points 9m ago
It is automatic it takes off as soon you add something to your bag!! You can see how much your getting off each drink tol
AppointmentLatter302 1 points 9m ago
Question if we have link to our app how do we scan it to get our discount?

I don’t ask for ID unless I know they’re lying or they’re being rude
chamorrobro 24 points 9m ago
I remember asking for an ID once because the person looked pretty young and was SUPER rude. I was then told by my shift that she was a manager in a neighboring district and I was so confused lmao
Ang736382638273 3 points 9m ago
Right!!
Melodic_Bid4806 29 points 9m ago
Honestly, I dont ID anyone I just ask the name on the partner discount. If you want to show me your id its cool but this is exactly why I dont do it. im sorry that happed to you babe :(
Latter-Guava-4734 8 points 9m ago
This is exactly what I started doing. The only issue I could see is if the numbers were stolen by the customer somehow and they knew the name of the person. I feel like I would personally never be able to remember a name though, so I just ask what the name is and if it’s right then I let it go through if not I confirm the numbers. After that I don’t really know what the procedure is tbh, never got that far.
Melodic_Bid4806 3 points 9m ago
recently i had someone who was a “partner” give me their numbers and then they ordered a flavor that was out of season and i asked for id and it wasnt even her!! thats the only time i think i ever checked
Latter-Guava-4734 4 points 9m ago
That’s valid. I mean if you’re going to lie at least be good at it .
darkwolf523 1 points 9m ago
Same, at least to the ones with their numbers on their app
moonbean37 25 points 9m ago
there was an update last year about asking to see the digital or physical partner card instead of asking for a legal ID to help protect trans partners from being outed in the DT all over a dang cold brew
dxdewhxt [OP] -9 points 9m ago
i mean i don’t think it’s valid to say “just over a dang cold brew,” deadnaming and being outed is a serious thing and it can be a big deal for some people. i was really only ok with the whole id thing cuz i’m in a whole nother state, but i would hope there is an alternative that keeps me safe if this happened in my city (which i now know, thank you reddit)
moonbean37 33 points 9m ago
that’s exactly what i’m saying. nobody should be outed over a dang cold brew
dxdewhxt [OP] 9 points 9m ago
oh omg my bad 😅
dazedandconfusedhere 21 points 9m ago
You can attach your partner card to the Starbucks app, then policy is to not ask for ID

You can also print out a paper partner card online, and agin policy is not to ask for ID (it’s only when giving numbers verbally that we should be asking)
iforgotmyprevlog 5 points 9m ago
I have the partner card set up for this reason, but certain stores in my area still ask for the ID. It’s annoying for myself but I think about situations like OP and I can only imagine the feeling. Wish more partners knew policies or asked at least
aee78 20 points 9m ago
You can link your card to your starbucks account or print out a partner card.
A couple of years ago, our first name and partner numbers were on receipts and people were using the numbers to get free drinks. I usually just ask for the last name on the account.
Vallion04 10 points 9m ago
I got in trouble for not asking for ID or partner card 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I ask to cover my ass basically. I honestly don’t care who uses the discount or whatever
MakeLulzNotWar 6 points 9m ago
This happened to me a few times when I was in the process of getting my name changed. Once the partner on DT was acting mad hostile and insisted on seeing my ID. I handed it to her and she said "that's not the same name." Dumbfounded, I replied "I know, I'm trans..." and she said "well we can't give you the discount" until her shift marched over and took care of it (and likely scolded her afterwards).

Nobody should have to produce a government-issued ID just for 20% off a nitro, relax people. Howard Schultz isn't gonna give you a belly rub and an extra helping of boot just for ruining a very sleepy tgirl's day. Allow your empathy to transcend Starbucks' corporate policy.
MrsClaireUnderwood 4 points 9m ago
If you're verbally speaking your numbers, people are supposed to ID you. I don't know of any exceptions for trans individuals or people that have had a name changed.

However, if you put your partner card on your phone and use the app that way, you're not supposed to be ID'd.
biclimbercatmom 4 points 9m ago
in order to avoid this situation, i try to ask “do you have anything with your name on it?” or if they don’t then i just ask them to spell out their last name!
dxdewhxt [OP] 3 points 9m ago
hey some context! i am totally like ok with being id’d, I just heard from a coworker a few months back that the policy might’ve been changed because of the whole deadname issue, and wanted some clarification. i understand the check id policy tho and have no problem following it (as long as the partners aren’t confused about the legal/deadname name thing haha) This was a large starbucks in a big city, so they probably have the discount fraud problem a lot and therefore follow the id policy closely.
deeciphered 3 points 9m ago
I've had the same thing happen. Most of the time I'll ask them for the name associated with the numbers because I do know of a lot of cases where partners aren't going by their legal names and it can confuse things, myself included.

If I were to I'd someone and they told me the names wouldn't match up honestly I'd be like that's fine. But at that point why ID them.

I also keep my little paper partner card I got when I was hired on as well just in case I do get ID'd and questioned since the names don't line up
florencelovelace 2 points 9m ago
we are no longer allowed to ask for ID’s according to my ASM and SM, the only reason we use to was because our partner numbers use to print out on the receipt!
Brilliant_List7381 2 points 9m ago
policy is to ask for an id or partner card. if you don’t want to be id’d you have to get a partner card. as a trans partner, i definitely understand the feeling of discomfort with being id’d (my id and name in the system don’t match either LOL) but if you don’t want to be id’d you have to get a card, not really a way around that:( or you can put your numbers on your app! that way they don’t need an id
dxdewhxt [OP] 2 points 9m ago
thank you! it’s definitely helpful to get a safe alternative in case this happens closer to where I live. I don’t know how I would show them how it’s connected to my app (i just mobile order when i can) but i’ll look into a partner card !
djdementia 2 points 9m ago
Here is where you go to add your partner number with the app: https://app.starbucks.com/account/personal

and yeah you can totally just mobile order, it'll still give you your partner discount.
Brilliant_List7381 1 points 9m ago
thank you!!!
Animuthrowawayplz 1 points 9m ago
When you link the partner card to your starbucks app, they scan it when they ask for your numbers and it will pop it up instead of putting in the numbers.
Brilliant_List7381 1 points 9m ago
to get a partner card- go to my partner info and it will be on the left side of the screen under where you get your pay stub info and you can order it there! it does take a few weeks unfortunately though LOL
Brilliant_List7381 1 points 9m ago
so what you would do is add your partner numbers to your app actually! i don’t have the link on hand unfortunately:( but im sure you can ask your shifts/sm for it! that way you still get your discount on your app!
Abject_Ambition_6031 2 points 9m ago
Problem is, one time I was on cash (I didn’t ask for ID’s back then) but some teens tried to come in and use someone else’s partner card that they heard one of OUR partners use so when 2 people used the same card, I now ask for ID’s
interyx 3 points 9m ago
Recently (within the last couple of years) there was a TikTok going around showing the "hack" that partner numbers printed out on the receipt for whoever was logged into the register. It was probably just there so you could figure out at a glance who rang the transaction, but once that hit we had to start verifying everyone for a while until they stopped printing numbers on receipts.

I really, truly hate TikTok.
teensofstyles 2 points 9m ago
this happened to me too but when i was still 16 so i literally didnt have an id and they got mad at me 😭
darkwolf523 1 points 9m ago
I have mine on my app and plenty of other barista do. I just shrugged it off.
happyprince22 1 points 9m ago
Download the starbucks app if you don’t have it already, and add your partner card to your app. you can find it on the mypartnerinfo site from any device, and we aren’t supposed to ID when you use that to give your numbers so you won’t have to worry about it! If you did this and they ID’d you anyway, that’s not the policy and you can correct them on that.
starbucksbarist28 1 points 9m ago
Everyone’s supposed to have a partner card, they’re super easy but you have to order them on my partner info. I don’t think most people do them anymore tho I feel like they become a thing of the past after COVID
alexadegrange 1 points 9m ago
When I first got hired we were supposed to ask because people let their friends abuse their numbers. But I don’t because, I’m not going to deadname or embarrass someone by calling them something they don’t want to be called.
Aliciarox11189 1 points 9m ago
Use your app like scan the app and you should not be IDed
floofxs2 1 points 9m ago
We were told no ID check but have the partner confirm their name and if anything seemed odd we could say like “what store do you work at?!” or whatever but really I didn’t care that much. If you tell me it’s you I’m not going to investigate.
TylerJ716 1 points 9m ago
Around when I started (2 years ago) we were told to have ID with the issue if the public using our numbers to use our mark outs because for some reason our full numbers were on receipts. But I think another way to get around this is I've shown my schedule from work when I left my wallet at hone and the barista let that slide since my name was on the list of people with [k] and [b] by their names
Wspitsamanda 1 points 9m ago
we had somebody about a week ago come through the drive thru and trying to use partner numbers, except he was reading them off his notes app. when we rang in the numbers it came up as a girls name and this person was male presenting. when we asked for his ID, he said nevermind and drove off without his drinks really quickly. we asked an older partner about this and around 2019 before the pandemic, a lot of baristas were sharing their partner numbers online and people saved them in their phones for the discounts. that’s the only reason i can come up with for still asking for an ID with partner numbers because apparently a lot of people have been getting in trouble for those numbers getting used
Remarkable_Hold_2342 1 points 9m ago
My store and other stores around us just confirm it by the name on the app, since you can change the name in the app any partners who have changed their name in the system usually change it there too. So you could always ask if the app will work instead!

My store manager and asm told me that Starbucks is not supposed to ask for government ID to validate partner ID. She also told me if any person asks for my ID to ask for the manager and get them to call my store or contact our dm directly if there's an issue with using my numbers or app ID. I am also a trans partner and I straight up would refuse to give my ID to anyone in starbucks.
Hoax_Pudding_Cup -7 points 9m ago
We are no longer supposed to ask for ID for that very reason. To my knowledge we are supposed to ask the person what the full name is, then grant the discount.
StormTheParade 5 points 9m ago
Was this released in a weekly update or something? The ID rule has been around for a very very long time and has been a huge point of contention especially for trans folks. I would've expected to see more celebration here if the ID policy was changed.
No-Chocolate-6828 -6 points 9m ago
Only miserable people who have a cult like devotion to Starbucks do shit like this in my opinion.
dazedandconfusedhere 19 points 9m ago
Or people who don’t want to be fired 🤷🏼‍♀️
[deleted] -3 points 9m ago
[deleted]
aee78 6 points 9m ago
That's what they should have done. You could get fired for using your discount for someone else. Doesn't matter if they are buying your drink.

I don’t think you’re understanding what op was talking about. their legal name doesn’t match their partner info name. they don’t want to be called by their legal name but haven’t yet changed their legal name. they aren’t gonna change their partner info name to their dead name.
