Is it okay for my manager to tell me to find coverage if I am sick?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Mountain-Style-3236
I have a really high fever all of a sudden and have a shift tomorrow morning. I did as I was supposed to; contacted the sm, the asm, and the ssv, and left voicemails for all of them. The sm got back to me saying that I have to find coverage because “ssv’s are getting stressed with call ins and are getting tired of covering people’s call ins…” but I don’t see how that’s a me problem…? Like it doesn’t change the fact that I’m sick? Can he do that?

If you’re sick you’re sick. It’s not your job to find coverage. But our sm has been pressing us about the same thing too even though I know standard.

Right?! Cause I always thought if you’re sick you’re not expected to find coverage cause obviously sickness usually comes suddenly and it’s outrageous to be expected to find coverage in time! I’m scared to be penalized for not finding coverage though as the SM before him has done so to other partners.

”In the event of an unplanned absence, e.g., the sudden onset of illness, injury or emergency, or when the partner is using paid sick leave allowable by law, the partner will not be held responsible for finding a substitute. The partner is still responsible for notifying the store manager or assistant store manager (or partner leading the shift if the manager is not in the store) of the absence prior to the beginning of the shift so coverage can be arranged if needed.”
Screw ur SM. They cant do anything. If u are sick then it is absolutely not ur responsibility to look for coverage. U did ur part and notified the proper people.

It’s not like you can go in while you’re not feeling well. It’s a good safety hazard. If your manager does try to penalize you I believe you can call ethics and compliance or something.

No, once you call in sick that responsibility is no longer on you.

Tell your manager that if they don’t find a cover for you since you’re sick, they’re gonna have to find coverage for when you **QUIT**

I honestly wouldn’t find coverage and instead find the exact spot in the partner handbook where it talks about not finding coverage, and then when they say anything just tell them the page number and ask them to reconnect with you once they have reviewed the very common sense sick policy. It’s ridiculous when SMs don’t know basic policies about attendance.

No. As long as you’re calling in 2+ hours before your shift you’re following the policy and it’s not your responsibility. He can ask you to ask around to find coverage as a courtesy, but in the end it isn’t your job and you can’t be written up or given corrective action for that, unless you’re calling in excessively

When the desk job SM doesn’t want to do their job :/
Kaluskydrak4 points9m ago
They can say it’s your job all they want, it is not your job. SSV here, I sympathize and empathize with people being sick instead of ridiculing them. Idc if it’s true, you’re telling me you can’t come in and that’s final, it’s not a negotiation, it’s for their consideration of their partners.

This happened to me this week. I had to call out because of a sudden injury. Wasn’t anything I could do.. I literally couldn’t walk straight. And the ssv says “next time plan ahead”. Like …???? Ok sorry me being in crippling pain wasn’t convenient for you. I can’t be expected to find coverage for my shift in cases of emergency.

It’s ok to be asked to find coverage but if you’re sick and displaying any of the 5 main signs of norovirus (supervisors know) it’s more irresponsible for them to have you come into work.
xiew3 points9m ago
If you are in a state where you accrue sick pay it is not your responsibility
marigshu3 points9m ago
All that you have to do when sick is give appropriate notice that you will not be making it. It seems as if you did just that. You do not have to worry about finding coverage and your SM shouldn’t be making you.

We have absolutely nobody to call to help cover. It’s awful when one of us gets sick. We always feel so guilty, but we can’t go serve people when we’re sick….. I heard of one ssv who was sick and couldn’t find coverage, so she came in- but got sent home. She got fired for violating the covid sign in sheet. Ridiculous! So- call out, rest up, and your sm needs to wake up, do their job, and find the coverage…
Snarfungus2 points9m ago
when i’ve called out i’ve always been asked to help find coverage, but they can only request that you find coverage, there’s no penalty if you don’t find someone to take your shift especially if you are sick. my old manager tried to tell me to find coverage when i literally had covid and i straight up told her no
PetMySquid1 points9m ago
While not an obligation to you at all, it doesn’t hurt to try to find someone to cover your shift. It helps work relationships with superiors of you can manage to take some load off of their shoulders, even if it’s as simple as calling around. Granted, your manager has no right to tell you, and it was rude as well. They should have ASKED if you were able too and then given you the reason why. So I say it’s up to you.
Mountain-Style-3236 [OP]1 points9m ago
I always message around to see if people can cover. But yea, I found it quite rude to tell me to find coverage… like I’m sorry that a lot of partners are calling in, really and truly, but that just confirms that sickness is being passed around between partners and coming in would make it worse
