Wanting to transfer. Advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)

What’s the best first step? Should I talk to my SM first or the SM of the store I’ll potentially be transferring to?

When I transfer, I always make a point to reach out to the store I want to transfer to and introduce myself to the SM, talk a little bit about my availability, and get an idea of whether or not I'll be a culture fit (and truly whether or not the store will be a good fit *for me*).

When you talk to that SM, be sure to make it known that you will fill out a transfer request with your own manager.

Because ultimately that is the process. You need a transfer request form, fill out the fields, then submit it to your manager. They have 60 days to accept/initiate the request.

You can find the transfer request form on the hub. Search it, find it, print it.

Claire gave a VERY good and detailed response to this. I just wanted to add to it to help out a bit!

I just completed my first transfer within the company this past month. I was at a very toxic store and my SM made things hard for me. They denied my transfer at first, then said they would do it, insisted on me doing a paper copy which they lost, they never put in my transfer.

When I had an emergency move I communicated with my SM this and got denied as I said, my SM was accepting out of state transfers to our store so I confronted them and said I had called a store in the state I was moving to and they were very willing to get me accepted. After a month of no progress with my transfer (and after an unanswered call and email to my old DM) I just CCed my new DM and my old DM and called Partner Ethics and Compliance, and my transfer was processed in 24 hours.

My experience will likely be different than yours but I wanted to give you insight with my experience to inspire you that no matter how difficult or challenging, it is 100% possible. Being a partner for six months is old policy, especially if you are relocating for your education or for an emergency situation.

Best of luck to you!
