Caffeine amount in blonde roast?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kels0kickflip
I was working this morning and I overheard one of our regulars telling a partner she didn’t like that much caffeine because she’s sensitive. The home girl suggested blonde roast. I’ve always been under the impression that it’s had MORE caffeine than Pike and dark. I went to the shift on duty to ask and allegedly they had a meeting about this? I went on the app and it lists blonde to have 360mg and Pike to have 310mg of caffeine.
I’m sticking with my gut and I’m going to continue to believe the website but what do y’all know? What’s the standard?

Yes blonde has the highest level of caffeine because it's been roasted for a lesser amount of time than pike/dark.

Sorry I should have clarified that the shift told me that I was wrong and that Veranda and Pike had the same amount of caffeine. I knew it!

I was under the impression that the coffee itself has more caffeine but when we brew it we measure with a smaller spoodle (yes this is the actual term lol) which uses less of the coffee so the end results have the same amount of caffeine. I would believe that app though, I may be wrong !

We use the different spoon because the beans are bigger, the way it was explained to me. The dark and pike have smaller beans because they were roasted longer. So we use the smaller scoop so it shakes out to the same amount of coffee per batch.

Yea, except it’s the opposite. Blonde roast beans are smaller. The beans expand more the longer they’re roasted. You can see the difference in the size of the 1lb bags. The bag for Veranda is a shorter than the one for Sumatra even though they’re both the same weight. You can also just see the difference in the beans. Look at blonde espresso beans next to the regular espresso beans.

Trust the app/website. We are supposed to check it to clarify questions about ingredients, nutrition facts, caffeine, etc.

A venti blonde roast (veranda) has the most caffeine out of any drink on our menu. It’s definitely more caffeinated than medium roast (pike). Dark roast would be the least caffeinated of the brewed coffees that Sbux serves.

It depends on method of measurement. SB measures using volume so blonde has more caffeine than dark. Most other coffee shops measure by weight, it’s no real difference or if there is dark has more than blonde.
It has NOTHING to do with the caffeine being “broken down” that’s a misconception. It’s the size and density of the beans that changes which is why measuring method is what matter.

Lighter roasts have more caffeine than darker because the caffeine breaks down more the longer and hotter you roast it. But it’s also standard to not push the caffeine content as a selling point because the amount of difference isn’t actually that significant or reliably measured.

While it for sure had more caffeine, I think it has less acidity so maybe that’s what she is sensitive too and not caffeine?

No she told us she didn’t like that much caffeine in her coffee. I automatically suggested a dark roast and the other partner on the shift suggested blonde roast.

Blonde espresso has more caffeine, but I've been told our pike has the most caffeine out of all our drinks by my sm and dm but I've never actually checked

See that’s weird because I got told they had a meeting about it and I heard they’ve all got the same amount. It says on the app blonde has the most though. 😬
