I AM SO TIRED OF MY ONLY BACKUP BEING MINORS WHO CANT DO ANYTHING AND THIS IS THEIR FIRST JOB. I HAVE TO SKIP MY BREAKS TO ENSURE THIS STORE DOESNT BURN TO THE GROUND. I AM SO DONE. I LOVE YALL. BUT IM SNAPPINNG.(self.starbucksbaristas)

please please take your breaks. You need them, and you deserve them. People can wait for an extra couple of minutes for their ~~socially acceptable breakfast ice cream~~ coffee.
PIEDBE78 points9m ago
I feel this, but I’ve also been where OP is. Sometimes I skip my 15s because I know if I go. I’ll just end up being pulled back onto the floor to deal with people who think it’s okay to yell at a 16 year old whose been with the company for 1.5 months.
ezranilla21 points9m ago
I'm with you. I work in healthcare now and I worked 13 hours yesterday with a 25ish min break to eat bc I felt bad that patients were waiting. For the type of healthcare we provide, the appointments are usually 4-6 hours with different steps involved and waiting in between, so they've already been there for a long time. I have to remind myself that I did not ~~fuck the staff over~~ overbook this day and it is not my fault when things are hella backed up. It's not like that every day, and it doesn't have to be like that at all.
I guess my point is that it doesn't have to be like this, and if we let it happen to us it will continue to happen.
VictorianLibra225 points9m ago
Exactly. Or the shift stuff doesn’t get done and you have to stay late anyway…I never take my last tens unfortunately 😕
CantaloupeNo45582 points9m ago
closing shift here. I automatically cross off my last ten when I get to work because unfortunately, I know too well that I won’t be able to take it.
lewabwee27 points9m ago
The reality of it is that breaks are sometimes more work, not less, unfortunately.
SnazzyVow6 points9m ago
Not to mention it’s the law
ezranilla10 points9m ago
depends on the state. Missouri does not require employers to provide a break of any kind, including lunch. I'm sure it's not the only state like that.
mama_bibi3 points9m ago
Yes we need our breaks but I skip my half all the time solely for the fact that if I don't during that half hour all the work I've done will be undone and I will have to fix it. I also came from a store where we only took 15s no half so im used to working 8 hours without a half and it doesn't bother me
Lcolecrochet191 points9m ago
Been there. I used to be main mid SSV at my last store so not only would I have the least amount of baristas on the floor during that day part, I usually got all the green beans. So I would have to be doing extra training with them on top of keeping lines moving and doing my own work. Next to peak our mids were the busiest part of the day and I was always exhausted by the time the closer came in. I usually didn’t have a co SSV during the mid so it was very stressful. I was usually front reg/ovens/bar support all at once.
mrbubblegxm [OP]100 points9m ago
Exactly!!! You get it. I have to literally run around like a chicken with my head cut off and a wing tied my behind my back.
Lcolecrochet47 points9m ago
And on top of all that, the floor is lava
Immediate_Anteater_244 points9m ago
Running around maniacally while they stand there. Then they’ll b like “this ice is empty, should I like… get some more?” Yes bitch go. Do something. Do your job
ProudChoferesClaseB4 points9m ago
well hard to blame 'em they spent the only 16 years of they lives either sitting in front of a screen or sitting in a chair in a classroom..
no practical experience.
NanobiteAme9 points9m ago
I had this same thing, but closing shifts. I would get one Roasted bean as pre-closer and the rest of the floor to close was green beans.
Lcolecrochet13 points9m ago
It’s so frustrating too because you’re still expected to function as if you have a full floor of roasted beans! Like if 90% of my floor is green beans my window times are NOT going to be 40s or less.
NanobiteAme12 points9m ago
Oh 100%. And the notes about everything not being done. Like dude. We are the busiest Bux in our area, especially at the hospital change over in the evening, and you’ve given me 90% Green beans? No training is possible this way, on top of all the stuff I have to do as a shift.
lewabwee126 points9m ago
The worst part of the job can honestly be trying to be gentle and understanding with a teenager who has never worked before, doesn’t want to be there and doesn’t need to be there.
They don’t deserve me being a dick, they don’t deserve this crappy job, but holy shit it’s so much work keeping things going in spite of them. I don’t deserve it either.
I’m gonna add here that a lot of my favorite baristas are and have been teenagers. It’s just the ones who are bad are really bad because ultimately they can afford to be fired.
GarbageValuable18885 points9m ago
I think the big thing with teen baristas is some get it and some just don’t. I can usually tell within 5-10 minutes if a newer barista has that spark, which honestly I’d say 50-60% of them do. The other half though… unfortunate :(
Levyxxy1 points9m ago
I’d have to disagree, most of our young baristas are saving and trying to pay for school, collage, driving etc. there honestly the most underpaid, over worked and Ned the money a lot
lewabwee1 points9m ago
All of that can be true and none of it contradicts what I said. I even said a lot of my favorite baristas are teens and regardless they all deserve better . I just the worst baristas are teens who don’t need money and don’t want to be there.
Levyxxy1 points8m ago
They do need money though, just because there teens doesn’t mean that they don’t.
lewabwee1 points8m ago
Then I’m not talking about those specific teens you’re referencing.

I was a partner for 8.5 years, shift for all of them. Worked at several stores for several managers. I cannot stress enough how much my mental health has improved since I quit early this year. It's a scary change but my quality of life has improved a shocking amount. It's not worth the stress and damage, put yourself first.
hungry_quadricorn36 points9m ago
Literally quitting has been the best thing for my mental health! I was shift for 4.5/6 years and tried everything to get through it. Quit a little over a month ago and the things this company puts on partners isn’t it. No matter what day part is worked or the baristas age, nothing happens unless the managers and above actually care. It wasn’t worth my mental health or stress. Put yourself first! And take your breaks!
gabby246818 points9m ago
I have a great manager who cares about us and the store and it’s still shit. I think that’s what made me realize it’ll never get better and I oughtta break out my resume
hungry_quadricorn7 points9m ago
I had an amazing store manager in a different state and the store was soooo good. Had to move to a new state and hit stores #4 and 5 for me. Management issues at both and finally got a DM who earned their position before I quit. Too far gone in burnout to stay with her :/ so I busted out my resume and took a long month of no work. I highly recommend for anyone feeling it
jeonzelink13 points9m ago
Same. I took a month off for LOA to take care of my mental health. I was so happy. When i came back, i quit on the first day. I work at a local coffee shop now and it’s much better if you actually enjoy being a barista.
Narwhal_Various5 points9m ago
Yes to this! I honestly didn’t realize how much working at Starbucks was mentally hurting me until I quit. I miss (most) of my coworkers but my god has my life gotten exponentially better since leaving the siren.
Imaginarybluntallday31 points9m ago
I snapped, and I learned that it sucks but it’s okay for us to do that. My snap wasn’t just me breaking down, but I mouthed off to multiple managers and that’s honestly, I think, when they got the damn hint that there needs to be some change
sp00kith0t24 points9m ago
That’s all they want to hire.. because that’s all will put up with managements BS.
Culumia18 points9m ago
Let the store burn. Support your young coworkers as best as you can; but it is not your fault that starbucks is not preparing them, giving them the support that they (and you) need, and understaffing as a rule to increase profits over the wellbeing of their workers.
olliesbees17 points9m ago
i told my asm and sm that it’s not fair to staff me with 3-4 minors on a weekend and that i deserve my 10s just as much as everyone else and i haven’t had more than 1-2 minors on my floor with only tens now
Professor_Sqi15 points9m ago
God I know this pain.
Bless them, they are trying their hardest - well, some of them.
youjustgottaignite15 points9m ago
If I had the choice to hire, it would never be minors. Most of them have a terrible work ethic and they have a limited availability.
Remarkable-System-513 points9m ago
Some minors are actually hard working like me. I’m glad you don’t have the choice to hire respectfully.
youjustgottaignite2 points9m ago
I typed in “most of them”, not all of them. From my personal experience, most of them really do have terrible work ethic, and it’s stressful. We simply have different experiences. I do wish, however, my experience was the same as yours. I would really love that.
Not_Another_Karen15 points9m ago
Did I write this? Dang.
Affectionate_Fart11 points9m ago
I’m over the babysitting aspect. It’s just so annoying.
Pylon-Cam10 points9m ago
There are plenty of minors for whom Starbucks is their first job and they’re good at it.
If anything, I feel like it’s usually the older workers who aren’t as good/don’t care.
healthypenguins6 points9m ago
I was thinking this. All of the teenagers I've worked with at Starbucks have been fantastic, but I also had a hand in training all of them at my current store. I 100% trust them more than I do some of the older partners. My experience is that they're less afraid to ask fir help when they need it, rather than let themselves get weeded and then rush and hand out less than quality beverages.
sakuramads9 points9m ago
Literally me yesterday.... 4 new partners during saturday peak.... 2 minors ... 😭
Starbucks-sm8 points9m ago
I work at Panera now, and the first thing I heard when I went to take a break was, managers don’t take breaks. I said the hell I don’t. And as a GM, the moment that my managers can’t walk away for 10 minutes at least twice in their shift is the day I quit my job because I suck at it.
vodwalyn8 points9m ago
Let me just say that the teenagers now are a lot more hardworking than the teenagers I worked with 3 years ago. Maybe just my experience though
LunaSpain947 points9m ago
I feel this, having to do stock count, with 2 minors that aren’t bar trained.. literally can’t leave the bar, but also have to count. Hey, why not get them to count I hear you ask? Because they are SLOW and use it as an excuse to do minimal work, and when I legally have to take them off shift by a certain time I have to pick up their slack or stuff won’t get done in time. So yeah no breaks for me either lmao.
VictorianLibra222 points9m ago
So frustrating. I’ve been there where I’m the only one seasoned enough to be able to do bar and then my shift stuff falls behind ☹️ Maybe we’ve got to have conversations (again) with our SM’s about scheduling these partners for dedicated bar practice. Otherwise it’s not going to change
dogejojo6 points9m ago
it’s funny because my store is the opposite. we constantly have people in their 50’s-60’s training who are becoming ssvs but are asking me (18) and my other co workers who are 17 where buttons are on the pos 😭 they’ve been here for months it drives me absolutely insane
franglaisedbeignet3 points9m ago
Lol. Yes that’s exactly me!!! I’m that person. Over 50. It seems like they keep rearranging the buttons every 3 months and I have no excuse really. I panic when someone is waiting on you to find the 15th button you need to select for one drink.
Leeharp926 points9m ago
This is exactly why I quit March 2020. After 5 years of high stress, eventually breaking down every day for the last few weeks and my physical health deteriorating, I finally quit. Never looked back. A job is never worth it. You are just a number to them.
sasschester5 points9m ago
say it louder for the people in the back !!! i am so tired i almost walked out today
Wspitsamanda5 points9m ago
finally somebody said it. i usually don’t take my 30 until the 6 hour mark, sometimes even a little later because the minors can’t do anything by themselves. i never get my 10’s. none of them can run a store for even the 30 minutes that i’m on my break, i always have to come back early to help them. i just wish we had some people that i could trust with the store so i’m not burnt out after every shift. they’re my team and i’ll stand up for them against anything, i just wish they didn’t still need training wheels after 6 months.
plantainpapii5 points9m ago
I usually dont have problem with minors. In my experience, most minors want to do a good job because they’re afraid of criticism.
it’s the early 20s, “i’m in college so I don’t care”-types that are the ones I kirk on the most.
Those are better, too, because theyre an adult and you can RESPECTFULLY go off on them without feeling like you’re mentally stunting them or whatever.
We have partners who have been here for 2 years and still don’t know how to:
-sequence,
-not make a drink without making it look like a bukkake scene took place on cold bar
- know how to fucking mop(!?)
All the aforementioned are 20-22.
These the same people that will hound you for a 15, too 😂
I literally told a barista that “you haven’t done enough for a 15” yesterday because this mothafucka wanted to take a 15 during a 3-person play while we’re in 30+ peak.
What is wrong with your brain!
makmelaf174 points9m ago
I know your pain... I have minor who is being developed , and another who is still in training... then a closer who constantly complains about her not wanting to work so many hours, but is unable to work and chat.... I take my lunch.... but I skip the other 2 breaks... the struggle is real.... I completely understand!
CoffeeDisorder3 points9m ago
On top of that they don’t take coaching well some times and think you’re strict and don’t want to work with you because you ask them to do their job or stop talking and standing around. 😐
mrbubblegxm [OP]3 points9m ago
LITERALLY 😭 Like i’m not going to be here for every shift. when it’s your turn to be by yourself or w another person who is new you’re not going to last 😭
aee782 points9m ago
Parents need to start teaching their kids basic life skills, like how to sweep, do dishes, or change a trash can. We've had a couple, I'm surprised they managed to even make it in to work on their own. Though kids that have a couple of younger siblings and both parents work are almost always bomb ass employees.
RexRoman202 points9m ago
As a weekend only SSV, I feel you 😭
gracefulnote2002 points9m ago
Me af bro Or an assistant manager who doesn't do anything but bar and if I'm on bar he pushes me out 💀
ProudChoferesClaseB2 points9m ago
fuck it. quit. let'em squeak by on newbies.
imtheirmom_9272 points9m ago
I am in a severely understaffed LS Its me and one other certified with 2 newbies, I get another tomorrow. It's crap we are set to launch mobile 10-4 I have 1 16 year old newbie, a pregnant (due November) 19 year old, and as of tomorrow I have a person with downs (she is super excited and eager). I just lost one with Autism due to telling him he needed to make drinks in order for me to keep him in the department... I am beyond burnt out, last week was 61.5 hours... thats become my new normal. I get it.... It gets better if we hold steady, and stay strong. You got this!
blxckedge2 points9m ago
i think 17 should be the youngest
Remarkable-System-512 points9m ago
16 year olds can work hard too.
demigirlhailee2 points9m ago
honestly is the 20 something that have been job hopping since high school I usually have the most problems with. almost every time I have a high schooler on my floor when I need a break, I leave them in charge until I get back. but green beans are always hard to deal with, no matter the age
Immediate_Anteater_22 points9m ago
Felt this in my soul.
urdadstitjuice2 points9m ago
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME RIGHT NOW AND MY WORLD IS SPINNING
MrHorse6662 points9m ago
I have the same problem
Alternative_Exam37232 points9m ago
Is this my manager?😂😂😂
Levyxxy1 points9m ago
It’s not there fault.I started working in my store when i was 18 and we have a few members younger then that now. I honestly think its quite unfair to see how much People here judging people for there age and think they can’t do anything just because there minors. There two different issues. All the minors in my stores have been the most hard working and the most willing to give up there time to help out of everyone. Yes they make mistakes sometimes but we all do, its life, not a big deal. You shouldn’t blame people for not being trained properly.its not there fault and frankly no one’s great in a new place when they start, that’s not age related. It might also help to give them responsibility instead of viewing them as children who can’t do anything.
This is probably an issue in your store due to poor training, lack of support or poor managing. It’s not your fault and it shouldn’t made your job harder but there still doing the same job as you and have the same stresses. You also shouldn’t be skipping your breaks and stressing yourself out more, this is honestly an issue between you and your manger no one else and no one else should be blamed imo anyways
mrbubblegxm [OP]1 points9m ago
like don’t get me wrong i definitely had my green bean moments when i was a minor. i used to think iced coffee was pike brewed over ice. but i was always helpful and at least cycled between getting ice, restocking cups, grabbing milks, grabbing trash, and wiping and restocking my station all within my first week.

StomachGullible1 points9m ago
You know they intentionally hired minors to hedge against workplace organizing, right? Also, certain states allow them to be paid less, undermining your leverage to get a raise.
RenuhhBunn1 points9m ago
I feel you I was in the same position when I work for the bux. The year and a half I was there majority of the people they hired when they finally did hired people in our kiosk they were minors and it was their first job so no other job experience. Some didn't last long and quit after training cause it was too much for them. Some did really well and were awesome workers but then there were the others that just didn't want to work. Always wanted to be on their phone or stand around talking or even just standing there doing nothing while I was always there way after I was supposed to be off running around like a chicken with my head cut off while also rarely getting breaks. I was lucky to get a first 15 minute break which most of the time I was able to get in before rush but i almost never got a lunch, and getting a last 15 minute break never once happened. I was opener too so I had to be there at 5am and I'm a night owl so going to bed early was hard for me pretty much always was running on max 6 hours of sleep. Also because I was opener there were so many times the next shift due to come in usually at 8 but sometimes I'd get one at 7 if I was lucky or later at like 9, but if that person called out i was pretty much fucked and I'd be all by myself unable to leave the kiosk until like 11 or noon. It was exhausting it was so hard to be friendly and talkative to customers when your just running on fumes exhausted.

Yes! I support them as much as possible. I quite literally have to leave them be and figure it out because there is simply too much to do. I have never helicoptered them in anyway. I don’t even have the time to do that. I do my best every single shift to try to make sure everything runs smoothly. I am literally breaking down. I am so tired and frustrated. I literally cried when I got home because I feel like I am drowning.

Sorry let me clarify. I work at a license store they are quite literally not allowed to do a number of tasks because they are not 18. Take out trash. Use the Bale machine. work past a certain time. Open. Close. etc. I’m literally 19. I’m frustrated with management. We are severely understaffed. They are only scheduled to work a few hours. This leaves me doing the majority of the tasks. It is not fair at all to me. I am a kind trainer but I am not being given any help from leaders or anyone. This happens almost every closing shift for the past month. My options are either make sure the store closes safely and met the bare minimum or take my breaks and nothing gets done. Literally there is three other experienced workers. Okay this is such a rough period for me and them rn. We are all trying our best to help them get trained and make a positive workplace. Okay it’s not that I don’t trust them, I am frustrated that they are my only backup.
NitroDuck14 points9m ago
Welcome to Target, I think you are realizing it's time to switch to a corporate store. I did Target for 2 years and just got jerked around like that
mrbubblegxm [OP]11 points9m ago
Lol. I’ve worked at three corporate stores before even longer than Target. it’s not exactly any better. hell it’s worse there. shitty breaks. vicious customers. mobile ordering. Targets def sucks but Corporate lately is even worse IMO
NitroDuck15 points9m ago
Target Sbux are getting mobiles aswell though. It's definitely better at corporate, Target guests are some of the worst and most entitled people I've ever interacted with. I don't have to worry about someone finishing a pull and walking their slow ass to cover my break. Plus benefits are better at corporate
capsule_of_anxiety14 points9m ago
I also work at a licensed Starbucks (not in a Target, it’s in a grocery store) and I used to work at a corporate store for 3 years prior to this. Luckily the grocery store policy doesn’t allow for minors to work in our Starbucks (thank god) but I know how you feel though. I’m working with grown adults that I’m basically experiencing similar with 🥴
